i67vw3··on YouTube currently testing 5 to 10 unskippable ads before video starts
> And who would pay for Premium non-Pro? The situation really isn't comparable because YouTube is already available for free with ads. Paying to get less ads isn't a great value add.

To get Youtube Original content like Kobra Kai (it moved to netflix in the end)

https://deadline.com/2020/06/cobra-kai-moves-netflix-youtube...

Or for non-premium user will get 5 ads before start of video whereas Premium user will get 1 ad before videos and get youtube originals, background video playback, download videos, youtube music etc. And Youtube Premium Pro users will get all other benefits of Premium users with one extra feature of going completely ad-free.

Like the above sites, later on you will need to buy Youtube Premium Pro to actually get ad free youtube experience. Later on the current premium will definitely have ads.

i67vw3··on Visual effects for the Indian blockbuster “RRR”
It is not even a 'best' indian movie. It just the current most popular indian movie with western audience.

Tumbbad is somewhat considered masterpiece of indian cinema. It was made with just 700 thousand $ https://m.timesofindia.com/entertainment/hindi/movie-reviews....

>Pretty much every Indian movie I've seen is full of amazing and fun nonsense in one form or another.

They are the most popular genre. Production houses love them as they make them money and viewers also love to watch them as they can be watched by whole families.

>Not that I've seen more than 10 or 15 Indian movies, just curious what the mix is of serious drama vs, break into dance and or show crazy stunt movies is

Most of indian cinema is action genre with slice of life twist. There are also good serious movies with genres like drama, romcom, comedy, horror, history, sci-fi etc.

You must also know that Indian cinema is not a monolith like hollywood. There are 7 big 'woods' in india branched due to various languages. There is hindi wood (bollywood), tamil, telugu, kannad, marathi, bengali etc. Each have their own tasted with respective viewers. Over the counter action movies (like RRR) are most popular in south industries and viewers.

i67vw3··on iOS 16 Available September 12th
Truecaller is not bad in some areas like EU, US etc as there are strong privacy laws. They have slightly different versions based on the country and jurisdiction.

But where there are no strong privacy laws like india, truecaller is straight up spyware

i67vw3··on Why is LibreOffice still so bad?
Recently, I edited some stuff through libreoffice like borders, alignment, paragraph endings etc. I had a really bad experience, got completely pissed off during the editing to the point of punching the display.

Right now, I use 'OnlyOffice' an open-source office mannagement. It works really great (better than libreoffice, in my opinion). It has no particular bugs which will hamper production.

i67vw3··on Browser Startups Take Aim at Google Chrome, Apple Safari
> An Apple spokeswoman said WebKit is important to protecting privacy and security, as well as promoting efficiency and performance. She said users can easily change their default browser on the company’s devices.

Completely bogus statement from apple spokeperson.

Personally, I prefer google over apple (degoogled google). Google gives you absolute freedom while apple does not. This freedom can be used to have more private experience than apple.

i67vw3··on Ask HN: Interesting Onion Wesbites?
A search engine specifically to surf onion sites https://ahmia.fi/.

There is also bible on tor, check it out. You will find the link via ahmia or via hidden wiki.

i67vw3··on US bans export of tech used in 3nm chip production on security grounds
PRC threw a tantrum about it, no doubt about it. But, it never 'surrounded' the island. Two completely different things.

As far as I know, the videos posted of the PLA's combats by official sources during the visit were nothing but their regular exercises, as they had some PLA foundation anniversary.

i67vw3··on Scientists discover how mosquitoes can ‘sniff out’ humans
True story

If I am on table with 10 people and there are 2 mosquitoes, both of them will come and try repeatedly bite me. They will not go near the other 9 humans whatsoever (sniff them out).

i67vw3··on US bans export of tech used in 3nm chip production on security grounds
The parent comment said 'recently surrounded' as to say it happened last week.

As far as I know, nothing of this sort of happened.

i67vw3··on Show HN: Cookieless Conversion Attribution with Pathview
Also, some users block javascript altogether (pathview uses javascript) and only allow it on temporary or permanent basis on selected sites.

There are also anti-analytics filter list compatible with adblockers (default or opt-in) which might potentially add pathview in their database.

i67vw3··on Review of /e/ – Android-based alternative for mobile phones
According to comment by head graphene developer on twitter, google devs really like what they are doing and are happy about it.

Apple also recently made changes into their Mac code supposedly to help Asahi Linux team.

i67vw3··on New Google site begs Apple for mercy in messaging war
Google is too be solely blamed for it. Pretty much all android users prefer Whatsapp, Line, Wechat etc compared to traditional SMS. They could have had one proper chat application rather than having 10 of them in this decade alone. They are doing the same thing right now with Google Meet/Duo.

While iOS users prefer imessage, SMS, over other messaging services like Whatsapp.

i67vw3··on Ask HN: Anyone else having trouble with Twitter?
Not only the main instance (nitter.net) but the other instances are also acting slow.

Sometimes they fetch data or do not load at all.

i67vw3··on Incident report: Employee and customer account compromise
As far as I know, the backup password is not needed for recovery using this method. When you have 'Multi-device' enabled in settings and install Authy on second device then the backup password is used/useful.

But for this method, your phone number linked to Authy Account, email Id linked to Authy Account are needed. The Process is Started by old-school SMS based OTP sent to the linked number. You then have to Cancel it via a email sent to you, if you think some is doing is maliciously without your consent.

i67vw3··on U.S. Treasury sanctions virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash
I predicted it 3 months back https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31288544#31291943

Mixers are really great at doing stuff they claim to do, and they do work as intended.

Tornado.cash was next no matter what, it was just 'when'.

i67vw3··on Incident report: Employee and customer account compromise
So what exactly was breached related to customers....

Even in the Techcrunch article, they have not specified anything. Are these customers other businesses or regular users using Twilio apps like Authy?

If the 'hackers' got too deep into the systems they might create a big mess. Authy 2fa tokens are backed up on Twilio servers (opt-in) unlike Aegis/andOTP. If you lose access to your offline 2fa tokens (phone stolen/lost), Authy can re-send these token from their servers. Users need to wait 24-48 hours for the whole recovery process to be over.

i67vw3··on Twitter confirms zero-day used to expose data of 5.4M accounts
I just signed up recently with email (deleted the account after my work was done), it asks you phone number after 5 minutes of using it.

It blocks you from doing anything unless and until you give them your phone number.

i67vw3··on Libredirect – Redirect social media and websites to privacy friendly front ends
If you are using random instances run by hobbyist it will happen. Such instances come and go every week.

Try to use proper instances from projects like kavin.rocks, pussthecat, esmailelbob.xyz, bus-hit.me, vern.cc, tokhomi.xyz etc.

For eg., try https://nitter.kavin.rocks. It is one of the fastest instance and also hosts its CDN on Cloudflare.

i67vw3··on Who is collecting data from your car?
Problem is car manufactures have started forcing cars to connect to internet, even concepts like firmware, updates etc.

Notorious among them are electric cars like Tesla. Even petrol/diesel car manufactures have started doing same stuff.

i67vw3··on Who is collecting data from your car?
Year 2022: 'Degoogling' your car.

PC/laptops were first, smartphones were done next and now car are too be 'degoogled'.

Edit:- 'Smart' TV's were between smartphones and cars.

i67vw3··on Ask HN: What are folks using to track what shows/movies they’ve watched?
Notes app (backed up in cloud)

I watch shows from 10 different sites, so I note it down which show/movie I watched and till which episode.

i67vw3··on Ask HN: Do you guys hate medium.com?
Tracking, repeated prompts to login etc.

I have started using https://scribe.rip (and its other instances) for reading medium articles.

i67vw3··on Ask HN: How to create a pseudonymous blog in 2022?
Get a domain, register it anonymously and make sure to use the registrar's privacy add-on to block WHOIS info.

Host your own wordpress site (or non-wordpress) with your content. The hosting can be done by yourselves via your own web server (if you have the knowledge) or be left with hosting providers. If you host the content yourself via your own web-server, there will be one less organization which can take it down.

Or go by the 'dark web' route and host it via Tor, I2P, Lokinet etc (obviously there will be less people to read it).

i67vw3··on GrapheneOS: The private and secure mobile OS
Unlikely, just few days back the head dev of graphene fought with the bromite head dev for weird reasons, it had partly do with Calyx team.

i67vw3··on GrapheneOS: The private and secure mobile OS
>However I know that graphene are (were?) Working on a store of their own at some point, so when that is released my opinion may change.

They have their own store now, https://github.com/GrapheneOS/Apps/releases.

Currently, it lists only graphene apps like Secure Camera, graphene PDF vewier, Auditor, Sandboxed Play services. Also, it only works for Android 12 and above, not only on GrapahenOS but other OS like Calyx, Lineage and it forks etc.

They are planning to add other graphene apps too, like Vandaium* etc. Non-graphene apps (like apps available on f-droid), I don't think they will be added. This store seems to be only for Graphene Apps.
