It's interesting to see comments like this that sound like they were written by someone who recently went through a social justice course at university.

Of course, I understand the impetus to piggyback a grievance on phrases like "white supremacist", which used to mean something. But these days their non-ironic use really tells us something about the person using it.

To further feed these tortured analogies, your car is rusted and has no wheels. Replacing the transmission is pointless and it's time to send it to the wreckers and get a new car.

Correct, and companies only ever pretended to care about measures of diversity that didn't hurt their bottom line too much.

How about software diversity, where one doesn't have to use either iOS or Android to function in the modern world? Or have to use Chrome OS at school, etc. We have no real freedom there unless we want to face significant difficulties.

You're assuming it's possible to incrementally improve the situation, but maybe a "crackpot" is the best we can manage. If we could put someone truly, brilliantly competent and uncaptured in charge it would have happened already. Sometimes things need to get worse before they can be improved.
hyperdunc··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
This is a pattern we see again and again. The true believers are fools because they don't anticipate how the implementation of their doctrine will be gamed.
hyperdunc··on Trump wins presidency for second time
> Half the populace elected a blubbering rapist, felon, and fascist to lead them. Again.

Your kind of ignorance is so tiresome. It's one of the best arguments for doing away with democracy altogether.

hyperdunc··on Trump wins presidency for second time
> the information I was getting

What does this tell you?

hyperdunc··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Trump may not have deserved to win, but the Democrats deserved to lose - and I'm relieved they did.

Maybe after this rematch the blue team will finally understand the loss was their fault, so they can start moving away from the abominable ideology and spiteful elitism that handed them this result.

hyperdunc··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
This is complete nonsense. Israel isn't pursuing genocide. They've killed less than 100,000 Palestinians out of several million. That's obvious restraint compared to what they could do if they really wanted to.

You may not like Israel but the word 'genocide' is being abused here, and this whole ICJ ruling is theater.

hyperdunc··on FAA orders grounding of more than 170 Boeing 737 Max 9s
It's not about "failing". Boeing lobbied for special treatment to save some cash instead of fixing a safety issue. For that, the death penalty is appropriate.
hyperdunc··on Nepal bans TikTok and says it disrupts social harmony
No, it's a woman who uses her sexual allure to attract and extract money from lonely boys.
hyperdunc··on How Equifax Was Breached in 2017
Yes, the punishment should be immense. But we all know there's no real justice to be had here.

In places like China, there's personal accountability at the highest level of an org for major screw ups - sometimes even capital punishment.

If we put such options on the table here, perhaps corporations would be a little less callous with people's private data, and a little less eager to collect it.

hyperdunc··on Who is driving Germany's far-right poll surge?
Not all cultures have the same personality. Some combinations are more compatible than others.
hyperdunc··on Who is driving Germany's far-right poll surge?
> Germany is as racist as it gets.

Not even close to true. Most countries in the world are more racist than Germany.

hyperdunc··on Wages Are Not an Important Driver of US Inflation, San Francisco Fed Study Finds
Healthcare is not free, it's taxpayer funded and consumes a huge portion of the national budget.
hyperdunc··on Free speech under attack across Ireland, UK, Europe and globally
Wait until the definition of hate speech changes to include something _you_ want to say.
hyperdunc··on Ask HN: What's on your home server?
Frigate for object detection on RTSP streams. It integrates with Home Assistant so you can include detections in automations.

Also Proxmox, Prosidy (XMPP), AdGuard Home, Jellyfin, Paperless and Photoprism.

hyperdunc··on Where does ChatGPT fall on the political compass?
What does "safest speech" even mean? Most boring? Orthodox? Speech that doesn't cause negative emotion?
hyperdunc··on Ask HN: What's your secret diet tip you can share?
I've done nine days on water only and it was fantastic. It reset my tastebuds and simple foods tasted great again. Not to mention the weight loss.
hyperdunc··on Bunny AI
Yeah, beauty and fun aren't necessary. Maybe we should instead exist in a drab, brutalist world. That ought to decrease emissions a fair bit.
hyperdunc··on Anthropology in Ruins?
This is what pathological inclusion gives us - a lack of conflict between ideas, which means there can be no proper evolution of ideas. So inferior ideas end up wallowing in their own pools of self-aggrandizing ignorance.
hyperdunc··on Anthropology in Ruins?
Postmodern relativism has encouraged viewing all knowledge on an equal footing, which is ridiculous, because the application of knowledge has varying consequences.

If you care about what's real and you care about progress, scientific explanations are better than traditional ones. But when one's identity is partially composed of traditional explanations, contradictions are seen as an attack on identity itself.

In other words, some people find comfort and meaning in the familiarity of relative ignorance, especially when that ignorance is culturally shared. Processing new and contrary information is uncomfortable.

But no one has the right to insist that others validate their own ignorance, which is effectively what equating skepticism with violence is. And these days, at the extreme, you may even be accused of trying to "erase" someone if you question their cherished ignorance.

And yes, everyone is ignorant, although not equally. One true mark of a person is how they navigate and synthesize new information. Seeking better knowledge is directional, even if it's also asymptotic.

hyperdunc··on Binance outflows hit $6B as Mazars halts ‘proof of reserves’ work
What's this trend of telling others to please do something? I've seen it all over HN this year and it's so condescending.
hyperdunc··on The Twitter Files Part 2: Twitter's Secret Blacklists
He was POTUS, that's why. And still they got rid of him as soon as they could. Less well known figures got booted for less.
hyperdunc··on The Twitter Files Part 2: Twitter's Secret Blacklists
The average person would not agree a far right systemic bias is now growing. What you're seeing is a correction towards the center.
hyperdunc··on The Twitter Files Part 2: Twitter's Secret Blacklists
Online platforms should not be allowed to moderate content according to whim or unwritten bias.

If a piece of content is moderated, it should remain in place and be clearly labeled with an explanation from the TOS.

Exceptions: If the moderated content is spam it can be collapsed. If it's illegal, it can be removed.

hyperdunc··on The Twitter Files Part 2: Twitter's Secret Blacklists
Either you're kidding, or you're so far left that everything else looks right wing.
hyperdunc··on The Twitter Files Part 2: Twitter's Secret Blacklists
In other words, Twitter was moderating user content according to a systemic far-left political bias at the company. But since your bias matches, you don't think it's a big deal.
hyperdunc··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Some of the recent pronouns I've seen are barely pronounceable. Getting others to refer to you in an unwieldy way seems more like a power play to me.

We already have some titles that signal achievement, like Doctor. I'd be for introducing more of them. Maybe we can get rid of the hereditary ones, too.

hyperdunc··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
It being incredibly important to them is part of the narcissism.

They can believe whatever they want, but they don't get to demand validation from anyone who's not willing to freely give it.

This pronoun nonsense is as much of a coercion as it is a kindness. I won't participate.
