hyperdunc··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Sorry, a person's gender identity just isn't that interesting, and the extra cognitive load of remembering pronouns isn't something I'm willing to bear.

This trend isn't meaningful, it's narcissistic.

hyperdunc··on The Backdoor That Keeps Russian Oil Flowing into Europe
Would you turn off all the gas? Are there no other ways to light the metaphorical fire?

Isn't it interesting how you admit that the lives of so many depend on natural resources they don't control?

hyperdunc··on The Backdoor That Keeps Russian Oil Flowing into Europe
That's not where most of the gas is going.

It would have been smart to invest in energy diversity before the war started. Too late for that now.

hyperdunc··on The Backdoor That Keeps Russian Oil Flowing into Europe
It's also that Europeans aren't willing to suspend their gas-fuelled comforts.
hyperdunc··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
Rogan better buckle up. He's stepping on the narratives of some powerful people and this kind of thing won't stop until he's under thumb.
hyperdunc··on Reduced-hours software development engineer position at Amazon
This kind of hyberbolic language is everywhere now. 30 years ago this phrase might have captured attention in a non-cynical way.

There's too much content now, and it's a race to the bottom as every piece tries to gain attention.

hyperdunc··on Piped: A privacy-friendly YouTube front end which is efficient by design
I'm wondering if captcha is going to be a problem on any YT front end that hammers the site to fetch updates for a bunch of channels/subscriptions. It's a problem I've encountered using NewPipe on Android.
hyperdunc··on Indiscriminate messaging and chatcontrol: Last chance to protest
> Through a second piece of legislation to be proposed soon, the EU Commission intends to oblige all providers of chat, messaging and e-mail services to deploy this mass surveillance technology.

So they're going to require Signal to break their E2E encryption if the app is to remain legal and readily available? Wow.

Regardless of what intentions the EU bureaucrats have, there's no way these requirements won't be abused. Imagine what insights could be gained from applying a little ML to the real-time chat of an entire continent. Who would you trust to have access to data like that?

hyperdunc··on Joe Rogan is too big to cancel
Right. Is there anything more insufferable than the sanctimonious prose of the NYT?
hyperdunc··on YouTube takes down Xinjiang videos, forcing rights group to seek alternative
They shouldn't have this much power in the first place. The fact they have a platform that captures basically an entire market is a feature of corporate-applied technology and a failure of the political system.

But that's where we are, and after this incident we'll merely negatively adjust our perceptions of Google and continue to use their services.

hyperdunc··on The Most Dangerous Censorship
Two people with the same shade of dark skin, but different in every other way. Are they both part of the "Black community"? Can one speak for the other?

Or is this "community" thing a political thing, where members share a narrative? If so, why do they get to claim the badge of "Black community" from other dark-shaded folk who aren't like-minded?

hyperdunc··on German environmental groups file objection against Tesla gigafactory permit
Environmental groups file objections against every single major project in democratic countries, where it's their right to do so. Occasionally, the objection is worthwhile.
hyperdunc··on Peak non-creepy dating pool
If biological evolution in humans isn't displaced by radical technological change then this attitude will be selected against.
hyperdunc··on TSMC looks to double down on U.S. chip factories as talks in Europe falter
The only way to unite groups of people with fundamentally opposing political views is through oppression.
hyperdunc··on Deskreen – Turn any device with a web browser to a second computer screen
Barrier doesn't work well if your displays don't have similar DPI - the mouse cursor will slow down or speed up when you move to another display.
hyperdunc··on Overweight and healthy is a big fat lie, obesity study finds
Easier said than done for some. Many snacks are chemically engineered to subvert your rational mind.
hyperdunc··on TV detector vans once prowled the streets of England
It's partial to the status quo.
hyperdunc··on Mexico president slams social media censorship
The positions are hypocritical because they're post-hoc. The starting point is a visceral hatred of the opposing tribe, e.g. Trump/MAGA, and a desire to beat them - not a desire to be rationally consistent or fair.
hyperdunc··on GitHub Dark Mode is too Dark
There should be an equivalent of Godwin's Law for gender.
hyperdunc··on WhatsApp Will Start Showing Ads
WhatsApp stops working after a while unless you keep it updated.
hyperdunc··on Sight restored by turning back the epigenetic clock
People will assume what they will. I'd prefer a more explicit title.
hyperdunc··on Psilocybin and migraine: First of its kind trial reports promising results
My migraines were caused by cognitive dissonance and distortions in my thinking and emotions - a kind of fractured self that was out of touch with reality.

Psychedelics and marijuana helped me to integrate the conflicting aspects of my self. Then the migraines stopped coming.

I've heard about other people where the opposite happened - they ended up completely losing their minds.

hyperdunc··on Twitter may slow down users’ ability to ‘like’ tweets containing misinformation
There's misinformation, the bane of truth seekers.

And there's "misinformation", the bane of agenda setters.

This will be selectively applied.

hyperdunc··on Facebook, Twitter block the NY Post from posting
'Normal' is a state of duplicity where politicians present a veneer of respectability but actually betray their constituents by pursuing their own financial agendas behind the scenes. Trump at least somewhere wears his heart on his sleeve.
hyperdunc··on Facebook, Twitter block the NY Post from posting
Replace the word 'tyrant' with the name of almost any major political player and it remains relevant. The corruption runs far beyond any individual.
hyperdunc··on Additional steps we're taking ahead of the 2020 US Election
I think your point is valid but a condescending tone will probably stop it from being seriously considered.
hyperdunc··on Additional steps we're taking ahead of the 2020 US Election
What if those of bad faith get to decide what is true? The word "disputed" at least acknowledges that objectivity is very difficult.
hyperdunc··on The neoliberal era is ending. What comes next?
There's plenty of knowledge and technology left to discover, plenty of resources to transform, and plenty of space to grow into (including off-planet).

We just lack the will to do what's required because we're used to comfortable lifestyles and are unwilling to take risks.

hyperdunc··on Why people hate contemporary architecture (2017)
High density is bad for the soul. What we actually need is fewer people, but each doing more meaningful work.
hyperdunc··on Zuckerberg: I just shared the following note with our employees
Have you noticed how corporations with dubious histories are falling over themselves right now to tell people "your lives matter and we're listening"?

It's nothing more than opportunistic grandstanding.
