hw-guy··on California Law Requiring Board Diversity Is Struck Down
"Gov. Gavin Newsom, in signing the bill into law, proclaimed it a victory for racial justice and empowerment." I'm trying to understand what requiring LGBT board members has to do with racial justice.
hw-guy··on Rape as a weapon: scale of sexual violence endured in Ukraine emerges
Looks like Russia is reverting to tradition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_during_the_occupation_of_...
hw-guy··on Ask HN: How to handle situations when co-workers laugh at you in meetings?
You have some unbelievably immature co-workers. I have worked at many jobs over 30+ years and have never once seen anyone in an engineering environment laugh at someone's disability, including stuttering.
hw-guy··on Journalists Are Terrified of Criticizing BlackLivesMatter
And I'm sure the management will keep yammering on about the "difficult conversations we need to be having."
hw-guy··on An ancient geometry problem falls to new mathematical techniques
This is similar to the claim that an orange, say, can be cut into pieces that can then be put together to make two oranges. It turns out some of these pieces would be infinitesimal, and hence smaller than the atoms making up the orange (or whatever). While such a result may be satisfying to a theoretical mathematician, the engineer in me recoils.
hw-guy··on Whoopi Goldberg banned for saying holocaust was not about race
Care to elaborate?
hw-guy··on It's OK to not be passionate about your job
The other problem is that every job goes through phases when it becomes a slog and you just have to put your head down and do it. If you are only motivated by passion, it can be a real struggle to stay motivated during these periods. This can be especially crippling for people who struggle with problems like ADHD or procrastination.
hw-guy··on Improving MIT’s written commitment to freedom of expression
A much better analogy would be a record store that stocks good music and terrrible music, and allows the customers to make their own choices. Nobody is made to listen to terrible music.
hw-guy··on Improving MIT’s written commitment to freedom of expression
So what if they do? Nobody is forced to attend. They can always invite speakers to give opposing views.
hw-guy··on Improving MIT’s written commitment to freedom of expression
I'm old enough to remember when the "Free Speech Movement" came from the left, and conservatives were the censors.
hw-guy··on Americans, did you learn about slavery in school?
Of course, several times. This was in public school in redneck Jacksonville Florida, in the 60's and 70's.
hw-guy··on I’m Stuck with an Anti-Semitic Labor Union
It is if Israel, the only Jewish state, is consistently singled out for criticism when other states with far worse human rights records are excused.
hw-guy··on I’m Stuck with an Anti-Semitic Labor Union
Many nations have an official religion, often enshrined in their constitutions or even their names; for example, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and several others are officially defined by adherence to Islam. Many of these nations have terrible human rights records with respect to women, gays, and members of other religions. Many make the practice of other religions illegal. Yet only Israel, the world's only Jewish state, is singled out for boycotts and called an "apartheid state" by academics. Why? That is what is so clearly anti-Semitic about these boycotts.
hw-guy··on Ask HN: What’s your take on unlimited vacation?
Also, without a fixed number of days that you are entitled to, the manager's decision about how many days you can actually take is too easily influenced by favoritism.
hw-guy··on Showgirl, mankind, and blacklist don't make it past Microsoft Word's woke filter
That's probably already happened. The next step will be to take offense at the rewritten version on some other grounds such as "ableism."
hw-guy··on [dead]
My brother is very hard to shop for, so we have reached a compromise: he puts together a prioritized Amazon wish list every Christmas, and I order as many of the items as my budget allows. He's unsentimental, so it works. Whenever I've tried to surprise him with a gift I've selected, it has failed.
hw-guy··on 2022’s Best Cities for Remote Workers
It's not clear how they define the measure of "remote job opportunities." Wouldn't this score be, almost by definition, equal across all the cities?
hw-guy··on Why the Term Jedi Is Problematic for Justice/Equity/Diversity/Inclusion Programs
Knock on wood.
hw-guy··on Campbell Soup turned New Jersey into a tomato-growing state
I always thought it was a joint (what the New York Times calls a marijuana cigarette).
hw-guy··on Crime Prediction SW Promised to Be Free of Biases. It Perpetuates Them
It seems that this software predicts higher levels of crimes in areas that have had higher levels of crimes in the past. That's not bias--it's realism. And it would be inefficient to send police in equal numbers to all neighborhoods regardless of crime level.
hw-guy··on [dead]
This article makes the common and facile error of assuming that Hispanics cannot be white. My South American relatives, and millions of U.S. immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries, would disagree. Hispanic/Latino are cultural and linguistic terms, and the people referred to belong to all races: white, black, indigenous, Asian, and mixtures of these.
hw-guy··on Why punish a scientist for defending science?
You're absolutely right--I had misremembered the outcome of the trial--but it set in motion the idea of separating religion from science education, which now seems obvious to most Americans. And while the U.S. does have a wide contingent of (mostly uneducated) people as you describe, I could not imagine a serious research institution in the U.S. today recommending giving Biblical creation equal time with science in the public schools; even less, the mobbing of a scientist who objects to it by thousands of his colleagues crying for him to be removed from the National Academy of Sciences--with his provost and the society itself in agreement!
hw-guy··on Why punish a scientist for defending science?
The Scopes trial only settled things in the U.S.; presumably other nations and institutions needed at some point along the way to have their own equivalent. It's sad that New Zealand, normally regarded as a "developed nation" is nearly 100 years behind the U.S.
hw-guy··on Girls in Marketing: On a mission to empower and educate female marketers
My wife corrects me when I use the word "girl" for any female over 18. Can I show her this to let her know it's OK now?
hw-guy··on How to Uninstall Microsoft Edge
As much as I would like to uninstall Edge--and in the past, Internet Explorer--I am hesitant to do so. I have frequently been forced to use various state and local government web sites that only work with IE. One time I even had to revert to an older version of IE. I don't know why these web sites are so universally shitty, but that's another topic.
hw-guy··on Ask HN: How to Get Better at Finishing?
Once I concluded that I have ADHD, I made an appointment with a psychiatrist, although it's still about a month out. I expect he will put me on medication. Actually, it took me quite a while to get the appointment; many therapists have very long waits for new patients, or are not taking new patients at all. Supposedly has to do with mental health effects of COVID. Also, the ADHD itself made the whole process of selecting a therapist much more complicated and drawn-out than it should have been.
hw-guy··on Ask HN: How to Get Better at Finishing?
Sounds very familiar! I realized much, much too late in my career that I have ADHD; you might want to get checked for it (there are on-line self tests you can take first). I wasted many years underperforming in just the ways you've described.
hw-guy··on Conservative thinkers, ideologues announce 'fiercely independent' university
The article mis-characterizes the politics of many of the founders. They are against the intolerant ("woke") style of much of the recent Left, but that does not make them "conservative."
hw-guy··on What to know about babywearing and cultural appropriation
Reads like a parody of wokeness, complete with all the jargon: "colonized," "racialized," "BIPOC," etc. China has over a billion people; in what world is it a "minority culture"?
