hutrdvnj··on The Joy of Abstraction: An Exploration of Math, Category Theory, and Life
How can I get all content in a single PDF for free?
hutrdvnj··on Show HN: I made a tool using AI to convert articles to audio
Yes, I currently use the Read Aloud Android App and it allows me to use any installed TTS. The Google free network TTS voices are quite okay, but I know that there are better premium voices unfortunately I didn't found any high quality human like TTS in the play store as of yet.
hutrdvnj··on Show HN: I made a tool using AI to convert articles to audio
Could you make a paid TTS engine App on Android and iOS?
hutrdvnj··on Fosstodon Hub – More Upgrades
The backend is written in Ruby on Rails not something like Rust, this explains why it has such beefy hardware requirements for 50k users.
hutrdvnj··on “Invalid Username or Password”: a useless security measure (2014)
That depends on the sign-up workflow. It is possible to not provide the information "user already exist" on sign-up and instead just say "we sent you an email, please confirm". In this scenario a potential attacker who just wants to check for existing email addresses has no access to the email addresses he wants to check.

The contents of the email could be something like "Hey you just tried to register with this email address, but we already have an existing account with this email address ... Was that you? ... Maybe you have forgotten got your password?"

hutrdvnj··on Ask HN: Why is my two day old submit on HN frontpage shown as 1 hour old?
I agree. Modifying timestamps for features like in this case "second chance" is a very bad practice IMHO.
hutrdvnj··on C23 Implications for C Libraries
> You can be 100% sure that a python+numpy program won't.

It's possible to use a phyton+numpy program in 20 years, but you also have to save the entire environment and make sure that it works air-gapped (otherwise external dependencies would fail). One possiblity would be to store it as a qemu virtual machine. It's very possible today to boot up stuff as VMs that is 20 years and older (e.g. 20 year old Linux distros or Windows XP iso from early 2000s).

hutrdvnj··on Hacker News Parody Thread (2013)
I disagree with the author. I know he's incredibly successful and right about pretty much everything he's ever said, but I've had some experience in this area and just finished reading through some of the archives and I think his focus is wrong. I'm going to ignore the technical issue and talk about the bigger picture and higher level things than what was said in the blog post. If the OP thinks that the process is most important, it's really about end results. But if he thinks it should be about the end results then he's an idiot for not thinking about the process. I'll weasel in a reference the startup I co-founded even though it's not directly relevant.
hutrdvnj··on Is CBL-Mariner going to become Microsoft Linux?
They could have changed the number to decimal problem solved.
hutrdvnj··on Rust Web Framework Comparison
That makes me wonder if there is a web framework for Haskell that compiles to WASM.
hutrdvnj··on Homemade Heat Pump Manifesto (2009)
But the problem with that approach is that people tend to revive zombie threads. I would estimate that <1% of threads actually have any useful discussion after 10 years, the rest is bumping zombie threads.
hutrdvnj··on Checkmate: Cheating Detection
Hans was below 2500 in 2021, that's IM level. A typical young IM is in the 2400-2500 range.

To be precise he was 2484 in 2021-Jan as you can verify here https://ratings.fide.com/profile/2093596/chart

Hence he went from IM level to Super GM level within 1 year and 9 month.

Another coincidence is that GM Maxim Dlugy, a coach of Hans, is a known cheater.

hutrdvnj··on Checkmate: Cheating Detection
But it seems as Hans wasn't entirely honest about his cheating and therefore chess dot com banned him a week ago.

And there's the incredible sharp increase of rating, basically from 2400 IM level in 2021 to Super GM 2700 level (live ratings) within 2 years. Yes, that is legitimately possible, other players had similar incredible gains, so it's not completely unheard of, but he is either one of the greatest improvers of all-time or something is wrong.

hutrdvnj··on How to Bypass Cloudflare: A Comprehensive Guide
I think the best thing is that for some sites that has many ads, subscriber content, accept cookie pop-ups and/or captchas you will sometimes see that these are all gone and you get an ad free, full text version without pop ups and captchas. But that's only the case for websites that do not check for the origin IP and just rely on the user agent.
hutrdvnj··on How to Bypass Cloudflare: A Comprehensive Guide
I use Googlebot as my fake browsers user agent for years. It's really interested to explore the web, when everyone thinks you're Google.
hutrdvnj··on Chess Is in Chaos over Suspicion That a Player Cheated Against Magnus Carlsen
If we assume that the data is reliable (not hand picked just to make a case). Then let's check.

Two sided un paired t-test.

T-value of 4.9. SE of 56.325

Group 1 mean of 2383 with sd 125.56. Group 2 mean of 2659 with sd 119.16 39.7 SEM.

P value of 0.0001.

By conventional criteria there's about 0.01% chance the differences in the means is due to chance alone. That's 0.0001.

I.e. If you were to play 19 tournaments randomly 10,000 times, only 1 in 10,000 would you perform better on live boards as well as Hans did due to chance alone.

hutrdvnj··on Witnesses, drone expert react to mysterious lights captured in Texas sky
Let's flag it together, until it's gone.
hutrdvnj··on Ask HN: I want to be an expert in many things but my lifetime won't be enough
I had this feeling during my 20s, but now in my 30s I just relax and live my life without such thought. I have kids that add value to my life and I work as SRE on k8s clusters. Just relax and do whatever you want to do, even if you just do it for a few days, weeks or months, you gain experience that can be useful for all sorts of things. No need to become an absolute super nerd in just one tiny topic.
hutrdvnj··on Ask HN: What problem did Slack solve?
It's a more user friendly IRC with many extra features. While pro users might still prefer their IRC terminal client with text only commands (that's also what I prefer), it's clear that most users prefer a fully featured rich UI with things like video calls in addition to chat.
hutrdvnj··on Ownership of debian.community domain
I'm certain there's someone from the Debian community with some knowledge about the case reading this. Could you please tell us what has happened according to your standpoint?
hutrdvnj··on A Soviet test pilot ejected two seconds before the crash of his MiG-29 (2019)
From the Wikipedia article:

> The radar intercept officer in the rear seat, Lt. Matthew Klemish, initiated ejection for himself and Hultgreen as soon as it was apparent the aircraft was becoming uncontrollable. First in the automated ejection sequence, Klemish survived. However, by the time Hultgreen's seat fired 0.4 seconds later, the plane had exceeded 90 degrees of roll, and she was ejected downward into the water, killing her instantly.

It seems that she was just 0.4 seconds too late, otherwise she could have survived like Klemish.

hutrdvnj··on I assure you, medieval people bathed (2019)
I used to think that the printing press has been invented once and then spread, how many times has the printing press with movable types been invented?
hutrdvnj··on US regulators will certify first small nuclear reactor design
I think if Chernobyl happens on the open sea, then it's not very dangerous, but if you imagine nuke aircraft crashes in dense populated areas.
hutrdvnj··on Tor is fighting and beating Russian censorship
Can Tor work over IPv6?
hutrdvnj··on A Crack in the Linux Firewall
Yes, I think it's more of a toolkit hack. Given you have many of such hacks, find a way to combine them to make actual use of it.
hutrdvnj··on People with low BMI aren't more active, they are just less hungry, 'run hotter'
I have the same problem with raw vegetables, but there's different types of food, some food stops your hunger for like 30-60 minutes (e.g. ice cream) whereas other food can last for several hours, both having the same amount of calories. The "trick" is in my case to find food that satisfies my brain and makes me full for many hours, then eat such food in 95% of times.
hutrdvnj··on Ask HN: Is it possible to get an 18-year-old to spend less time on the computer?
Don't restrict his access, he is 18, you do more harm than good to go that way. Tell him that you are worried and offer him alternatives.
hutrdvnj··on NeRF: An eventual successor for deepfakes?
I think it does, because while you obviously couldn't trust images since two decades or so, you could resort to video which wasn't easy to believably deep fake until recently. But if everything online could be a deep fake, how can you find out the truth?
hutrdvnj··on Ask HN: Solo founders, what’s “stuff breaks while you're unavailable” strategy?
Risk acceptance. What happens if you die tomorrow by a car accident? Accept that risk and switch focus to more important things.
hutrdvnj··on Render mathematical expressions in Markdown On GitHub
I can confirm that MathJax is very slow, especially if you render complex math including graphs (all in view). The Google Lighthouse Benchmark gave me a very bad performance score, but as soon as I switched to Katex my statically rendered blog gets 95-100 points for performance.
