hundchenkatze··on Show HN: Pop.com – Video Calls, in 3D
I can't get it working. I've tried in vanilla (no content/script blocking) Firefox and Chrome. I've accepted the microphone permission, but it seems there's a hard requirement on having a camera attached? I'm getting:

"DOMException: The object can not be found here." - FF

and

"DOMException: Requested device not found" - Chrome

Since you state you can turn both the camera and microphone off, I think it'd be much better UX to not force camera and mic access up front.

Also, Firefox asked for permission before I clicked on the "Request Permissions" button.

I'm not convinced having a good reputation in the game industry matters. Either people don't care or they forget the instant they see that hot, new demo.

> how these DIY compare to actual commercial products

That's actually what this article discusses:

"If you’re in a hurry, this post says that if you strap two HEPA filters to a box fan, it will clear the air of basically all the particles we can measure, and it will do it faster than a commercial filter that costs twice as much."

You can modify parts of the Firefox chrome (i.e. parts that aren't the webpage) by modifying your userChrome.css file.

hundchenkatze··on Show HN: A Twilio-powered interactive talk radio platform
The quality is pretty good actually, I guess it depends on the caller's phone and reception. After listening bits of those shows, I think having everyone on, more or less, the same audio equipment addresses my complaint about old school radio. I always found my self having to turn up the volume to hear call-ins, and then turn it back down when the host started talking again. Having everyone dialed in via phone normalizes the audio across the host and guest somewhat. Keep up the good work!

It's a pretty neat idea. For homepage content consider bringing some of your help page content over. Your help page is great, concise description about what it is and how to use it. The skateboarding heart person is neat, but I'd rather you tell me about the product.

Hows the audio quality? / Can I broadcast via the Internet instead of a voice call? One thing that always bugs me with classic, terrestrial talk radio is when a guest caller calls in with tinny, heavily compressed audio vs the hosts crisp clean audio. I suppose it wouldn't be as noticeable if the hosts have similar audio quality to the guests.

hundchenkatze··on Show HN: A Twilio-powered interactive talk radio platform
The help page (link is buried in the footer) has a more useful description than the home page.

"How does Capiche FM work?

Phone calls, broadcast live online.

You start a broadcast, Capiche calls your phone, and you go live. Then everything you say gets live-streamed to anyone who’s dialed into your show.

Fans and friends (and foes, if you want) can call a Capiche FM show’s number to listen on a phone call (yup: every show has its own phone number), or just open a new tab and stream the show online from the show's page. Hosts can invite anyone on air to chat live, too."

EDIT: Honestly your help page is great. Concise description about what it is and how to use it. You should consider bringing some of that content to the homepage. The skateboarding heart person is neat, but I'd rather you tell me about the product.

They changed it with iOS 13. It will warn you now, and you can still download over cellular if you want.

hundchenkatze··on A former Uber engineer's disaster story
Yep, it was to prevent you from accidentally blowing through your cellular data cap. They no longer prevent the download, just warn you that the app is over 200MB.

hundchenkatze··on Houdini.how
I think only the other browsers need a polyfill. I just opened the dev console in Chromium and started typing `CSS.paintWorklet` (part of the proposed CSS Paint API) and it's available.
hundchenkatze··on Houdini.how
"Houdini is a group of APIs that give developers direct access to the CSS Object Model (CSSOM), enabling developers to write code the browser can parse as CSS, thereby creating new CSS features without waiting for them to be implemented natively in browsers."

It's kind of ironic that an API designed to bypass shortcomings in browser implementations is itself not implemented in non-Blink browsers (yet). Of course that's the route any spec takes, I just find it a bit funny.

Support status can be found here. https://houdini.how/about

hundchenkatze··on Bootstrap 5 Beta 1
That's definitely a good thing, but I think the person you're replying to is also concerned about the performance of the code when being run too. Things like dom manipulation could be slower in BS5's new JS, while jquery's has likely been heavily optimized over the years.
hundchenkatze··on Zero-click, wormable, cross-platform remote code execution in Microsoft Teams
Then those researchers need to stop complaining when they get screwed over by Big Corp. I'm definitely not saying that the researchers shouldn't be rewarded appropriately, but we've seen countless times that, even with official bounty programs, these companies don't care about the researcher at all.

If someone still wants to put in all the work, that's great, submit the vuln and reap the good karma but they shouldn't expect more, even if the org they're reporting it to promises otherwise.

hundchenkatze··on Google Poly is shutting down
Yep, I hadn't heard of this one. Several of their shutdowns have effectively been product announcements and shutdowns rolled into one for me. They announce a shutdown, I don't know what it is so I check it out. I get excited for a brief moment until I remember it's getting shutdown.
hundchenkatze··on Why AWS loves Rust, and how we’d like to help
The part you seem to be replying to doesn't imply that Rust is or should replace Java, at least not to me.

> I always hoped Java would make a comeback, but Rust is looking like the real deal.

To me it seems like SoSoRoCoCo is hoping their preferred language would make a comeback in popularity while also acknowledging that Rust is gaining popularity and real-world demand.

hundchenkatze··on Pixel 5 review: Google spends its bill-of-materials budget unwisely
For another data point here's my anecdote. My wife and I had Pixel 2s and then we upgraded to Pixel 3s. The only issues we've had were self-inflicted. I dropped both my 2 and 3 causing the screens to crack, but they've been fine otherwise. I also still have a Nexus 5 that's currently running LineageOS.
hundchenkatze··on Covid vaccine: First ‘milestone’ vaccine offers 90% protection
I don't read safety sheets often so I'm likely off base here, so please correct me if I'm wrong. My interpretation is that when used correctly it's safe.

Section 2 states it is non-hazardous.

Section 4 states it is not expected to present a significant ingestion/inhalation hazard under anticipated conditions of normal use.

Finally, Section 11 indicates that the Ammonium compounds present in RNALater may be harmful, but only when they are administered at LD50 concentrations.
