huehue··on A Plan to Turn Engineers into Managers
"Teach Yourself Management in Ten Years" haha

Management isn't that hard, specially compared to engineering where competition is fierce. The degrees are an absolute joke. I had virtually no social life during my CS studies, but the other one? Some of the managers I know don't even have one.

If you're the average HN reader you might have to hone up your soft skills and that's about it. Any competent developer would do just fine without training, even with autism going rampant in our industry.

It's not like we all jumped into the management career path in search for a challenge.

huehue··on Ask HN: What phone do you use?
For the past two years I've been using a Nexus 5, which I never really liked (should have gotten the LG G2 instead) because of the average build and camera quality.

Then Google bricked it with the 5.1.1 update, so while waiting for the replacement to arrive I got a cheap Lumia 535 that I'm loving so far.

Fast forward one week, Nexus 5 replacement arrives, and updating to the latest version bricks it again (this time a soft brick :)

Having realized that Google is apparently packed with morons I'll stick with Windows Phone for a while. Looking forward to the upcoming Lumia 940 or the successor of the Lumia 1020.

huehue··on To Lose Weight, Eating Less Is Far More Important Than Exercising More
Over eating on high quality bacon won't stop you from being a lard-ass.
huehue··on How Old Do I Look?
I've just lost 20 minutes guessing the age of Hitler portraits.
huehue··on Ask HN: What OS do you run?
Home: i7-4770k, 16gb RAM, AMD r9 290x running Windows 8.1. I might be getting an XPS 13 to replace my old laptop.

Work: i5, 8gb RAM 2015 MacbookPro running OS X.

I develop on Debian VMs (VirtualBox + Vagrant) at work and Ubuntu Server VMs (VMWare Workstation) at home. Almost everything is done remotely, sshing into the dev VM and running emacs there, the only exception being java stuff. Other than VM management tools and Eclipse my client boxes don't have much development stuff installed.

Tools: Emacs, Notepad++, Eclipse, Perl, Java, Clojure, Git, Putty/iterm2, Firefox, MySQL, redis. I'm playing around with OCaml but I'm a total noob.

huehue··on Why We Are No Longer Developing for the iPad
SQLToad is unmatched on Windows IMO.
huehue··on Why We Are No Longer Developing for the iPad
I use xkeymacs on my win boxes and I'm quite happy with it.
huehue··on Ask HN: Do you take nootropics?
No, what is making the difference is the boost of cortisol and adrenaline levels caused by HF/LC diets.
huehue··on John Carmack: “I just dumped the C++ server I wrote for a new one in Racket”
Sometimes Perl can be a beauty:

  sub sum_of_squared_pairs {
    reduce { $a + $b } map { $_ * $_ } grep { $_ % 2 == 0 } @_
  }

  sub schwartzian_transform {
    map  { $_->[0] }
    sort { $a->[1] <=> $b->[1] } # use numeric comparison
    map { [$_, length $_] } # calculate the length of the string
         @_
  }
huehue··on I code like a girl
TIL programmers evolved from being secretaries to bricklayers.
huehue··on What happens to your brain when you stop eating sugar
I might not be the average HN user, but I have to choke down ~4500 daily calories in order to maintain both weight and athletic performance, and doing so without simple sugars would be a pretty difficult task, not to mention if I suddenly started drinking oil instead as per advice.

Even at a standard 2500kcal diet half a can of coke still leaves enough room for micronutrient dense foods so I don't see what's the big deal.

Perhaps it's time to stop blaming it on foods.

Enjoy the rat race guys, your wife and her boyfriend will love you for it.
huehue··on Our Development Workflow
We might be discussing semantics, but try to see staging as a pre-production environment. You want to test the changes prior to deployment in an environment that is as close to production as possible, clean and accurate, while develop stays lean and dirty.

For some projects though this is a bit overkill and if you don't think this is important chances are you can get away with something more akin to the branching model rorykoehein posted.

huehue··on Our Development Workflow
It only makes sense to branch off production for hotfixes IMO.

In your example feature-B shouldn't have made it to dev.

huehue··on [dead]
My brain stopped after "meritocracy misogyny".
huehue··on Just had a heart attack
Hate to be that guy, but Phillip you really have to sort this out. Take this as a wake up call. You only live once.

"Exposing her belly is not a trap the cat is setting"

Nobody buys this.

huehue··on How Much Caffeine Is Too Much?
This is a direct benefit of coffee (along with donating blood) in my book.

The chances of you developing anaemia because of coffee are dim.

huehue··on Should people be eating more fat?
You must think caucasians were feeding on meat every single day or something.
huehue··on Should people be eating more fat?
But carbs are also less fattening than fat (on active individuals who constantly deplete glycogen stores, if you sit at work all day chances are you won't need many) when overfeeding.
huehue··on Should people be eating more fat?
"People eat too many carbs in their daily life and don't even notice and they carry lots of long term health risks."

Stop spreading this. There are people eating +400g of carbs a day while being exceptionally healthy.

huehue··on Should people be eating more fat?
Farmers do use polyunsaturated fats for fattening purposes.

huehue··on Spain is trying to get rid of Uber: drivers will face fines up to €18K
Just upon arriving to Barajas Airport in Madrid, I went outside to the taxi area and could delight myself with taxis not respecting the queue (allowing clients instead of referring them to the head of the queue) and the image of two taxi drivers fist fighting for some clients. Yup.

Not to mention they wanted to charge me over 100 euros for going from the Airport to the main train station.

From my experience the taxi industry of Spain is highly inefficient and overpriced.
