httpz··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
Nobody should take Dow Jones Industrial Average seriously. It's only relevant because it's been around for 139 years. It only tracks arbitrarily selected 30 large companies and it's not even weighted by market cap.

It was made this way because 139 years ago we didn't have computers and someone had to manually calculate the average.

httpz··on Why won't some people pay for news? (2022)
I see news as three parts: facts, opinions, and curation.

There are plenty of free and reputable news sources and paying doesn't seem to increase the credibility of the news.

So we're effectively paying for the opinion and curation. However, I don't feel the need to pay to read about a random journalists opinion nor the curation of a (possibly politically motivated) editor when I can read hundreds of people's opinions nicely curated by upvotes on sites like Reddit and Hacker News.

I have to admin, I spend far more time reading comments than the actual article.

httpz··on Super Heavy has splashed down in The Gulf of Mexico
If you're in LA and want to see the first Falcon 9 that landed, you can see it displayed in front of Space X HQ.

httpz··on Google's AI-generated search results keep citing The Onion
Google AI is wrong too often that fact checking the AI's answer is becoming more work than just searching the answers myself.
httpz··on The Vision Pro is a flop
What VR is lacking is content. Apple needs to make a user friendly 360 camera in an approachable price range. I take a 360 camera whenever I travel and rewatching 360 videos in a VR headset can put me back in time. Being able to relive the moment I saw the total eclipse or walking through my childhood home is not something a phone camera can do.

Currently the image quality of consumer grade 360 cameras are webcam level and having to edit and export 360 content then side loading it to a VR headset is not a very user friendly experience.

httpz··on T-Mobile employees across the country receive cash offers to illegally swap SIMs
So looks like FCC is implementing some new rules to protect against SIM swapping and that's taking effect on July 8, 2024. Though from the press release, I'm not quite sure if that'll protect the customer from a carrier employee being the bad actor.

httpz··on Learn to Read Korean in 15 Minutes
Interestingly, that "rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are", this totally works with Korean too.
httpz··on ASML dethrones Applied Materials, becomes largest fab tool maker
Zeiss -> ASML -> TSMC -> Nvidia

Seems crazy that there are no alternatives for these four companies in the high end AI semiconductor supply chain.

httpz··on Tesla's Cybertrucks are rusting despite stainless steel
Just like jeans and electric guitars, I can imagine Elon adding an option to have your Cyber Truck pre-rusted.
httpz··on Handwriting but not typewriting leads to widespread brain connectivity
Greek philosopher Plato argued, writing implants forgetfulness. I think in another couple thousand years, we're going to go full-circle on this..

httpz··on End of Life for Twilio Authy Desktop App
I assume many companies are using Twilio for their SMS OTP auth.

Does that mean Twilio has a financial interest in steering users away from using Authy?

httpz··on FCC rules AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal
I haven't answered a single phone call from a number I don't recognize for years now. As far as I know, I haven't missed anything important.
httpz··on Macs can now inform Apple if any liquids have been detected in the USB-C ports
It doesn't even have to be waterproof to prevent 99% water damage cases. It just needs to be water resistant against liquid pours from the top, like how a car can withstand rain.
httpz··on Possible Meissner effect near room temperature: copper-substituted lead apatite
250K is -23.15°C. I happened to search Moscow weather today and it's -23°C ~ -26°C.

So not quite room temperature but it's outside temperature in some cities.

httpz··on Possible Meissner effect near room temperature: copper-substituted lead apatite
Some Russian scientists from 1800s may argue that is room temperature
httpz··on Hyundai to Be First Automaker to Sell New Cars on Amazon
So basically truecar?
httpz··on Google paid $8B to make its apps default on Samsung phones
There are far too many people who doesn't even think about the concept of a default app, let alone know how to change the default app. If you showed 4 apps all named "Calendar" with slightly different icons to someone like my dad, he wouldn't know what to pick or the fact that Google made one of it and Samsung made the other one. Google probably has data on what percentage of smartphone users are like this and determined that $8B is worth it.
httpz··on WeWork Goes Bankrupt
What's interesting is McDonald's HQ owns the real estate of many McDonald's locations and takes rent from the franchisee. This way they can guarantee a steady stream of income regardless of their food sales.

I'm not sure how this would've worked out for WeWork.

httpz··on WeWork Goes Bankrupt
Preferred shareholders can be VCs who are usually not directly responsible for the bankruptcy. Also, WeWork is a public company so common shareholder can really be anybody, not necessarily all employees.
httpz··on WeWork Goes Bankrupt
We're talking about Chapter 11 here, which means the plane has already crashed and the court is deciding who gets what on what is left of the plane, which could still be somewhat valuable. People with golden parachutes already jumped off before the crash.
httpz··on WeWork Goes Bankrupt
The court decides but the rules are quite literally written in the Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The shareholders usually gets the shortest end of the stick.
httpz··on WeWork Goes Bankrupt
It's a Chapter 11 bankruptcy so likely they're not all shutting down. Some locations will probably renegotiate the lease term with the landlords and the profitable ones will stay open. With the office vacancy rate rising, I'm sure some landlords want to keep them.
httpz··on F-35 can’t be found after pilot ejected
Wait.. does this mean an enemy fighter jet with F-35 level of stealth capabilities can penetrate the US mainland without being detected?

I thought US had the air defense system that can defend against some level stealth aircrafts. Is that not the case?

httpz··on What Silicon Valley “gets” about software engineers
I'm very thankful to my high school self for choosing computer science. I feel lucky I happened to be interested in computers. If I was born 5 years earlier, I may have made a different choice.
httpz··on Today's Large Language Models Are Essentially BS Machines
Not necessarily technical writings but more like emails to ask for something, emails to decline something or even a birthday card.

It's also great for writing a professional sounding complaint letter to your utility company.

httpz··on Today's Large Language Models Are Essentially BS Machines
To be honest, I hated writing essays in English classes because I felt like I'm forced to write BS to fill up the space when my argument can be summed up in several bullet points.

Since I'm not a student anymore, I can just give ChatGPT a few bullet points and ask it to write a paragraph for me. As an engineer who doesn't like writing "fluff", it's great I can now outsource the BS part of writing.

httpz··on Silicon Valley's quest to live forever now includes $2,500 full-body MRIs
One of the reasons why people get excited about room temperature superconductor is because it can make MRI imaging very cheap. Currently cooling the superconductors in the MRI machine is a significant part of the cost.
httpz··on ‘San Francisco changed dramatically’ – Nordstrom is bailing on a flagship store
While malls are declining nationwide, you can't deny the general safety of the area around this specific Nordstrom is an issue.

When I walked out of the rear entrance of Nordstrom towards Mission St, I immediately smelled urine and saw five homeless person laying on the ground, Nobody else was on the street.

I used to walk around this area everyday to go to work before the pandemic. It was a busy area with a lot of tech workers, tourists, and conference attendees. It's not the same anymore.

httpz··on 256TB SSD from Samsung
I think with the rise of streaming and cloud storage, the need for large storage devices on a personal level is really declining for most people.
httpz··on Successful room temperature ambient-pressure magnetic levitation of LK-99
Apparently the theory behind LK-99 was inspired by the studies from Eastern European scientists. However, after the Soviet collapse, the study was lost.
