I'm sorry for not contributing with hard evidence but I've seen this behavior (though I never heard about it from anyone else before now)
Extra note- I would NEVER recommend a business use their home resources for work unless you know what you're doing (and why you're doing it). Even my homelab has vulnerabilities and I'm a security professional- more moving parts = much larger attack surface. There's a reason why corporations pay big buck$ for managed security services. Most homelabs I've seen are mostly for fun and personal comfort.
"What good is knowledge that is never applied" is what drives me to stuff like this. I can't speak for others but I'm sure I'm not the minority here.
Best $60 purchase I ever made!
I wasn't even aware you could use HE's services without being a customer!
I'm curious as to what others are doing to save costs if anything. I love the hobby but we're in a recession, lol!
Got anything more I can read? Dunno if I'm just blind but I couldn't find anything on this. I'd like to learn more!
I wonder if someone could develop a firewall for mobile/whatever TVs and STB are classified as specifically to block this type of 5G telemetry (if it doesn't already exist)?
You really gotta do some due diligence to make sure you're not buying lemon parts but it's very possible to get a beefy homelab at fair prices!
The catch? _No IPv6 support whatsoever_
If you don't mind me asking, does your energy bill take a huge blow because of this? I had a modest homelab set up and had to start shutting things off due to how much it costs to keep it running
I apologize if I missed this info in the blog!
When I was younger I was as far down as you seem to be. 11 years later and I'm still not where I think I want to be in my career and I don't even know what my skills even are but I'm still here. The world didn't end. I wasn't disowned by my family, etc... I realized that _only I was upset about my life, nobody else cared_. Once I wrapped my head around that things got a bit easier.
I still have my moments- I'm a CISSP and in fumbling an easy interview question about packet capturing for a job you spent 6 years doing before- but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter. Life ain't always rosey but it's not always caca either.
You'll never know what comes next if you walk away before the show is over, and you don't know what's next until it happens.
I'm a big fan of recycling old electronics wherever possible. Would the cost of compute to virtually destroy the data on the drive so it can be safely reused as storage exceed the cost of physically destroying the drive and then recycling the raw materials?
I know for some cases true destruction is the best way to mitigate data theft in this case but... That's a bit heavy handed for an 80% use case, innit?
Edit: personally I always check what's on my old drives before decomming them but I think I'm an outlier here
Assuming this is re: the article about the Finns you posted. I understand the logic behind not wanting to bother people as I do that myself, so I wouldn't want to force someone to chat if they don't want to.
Still, I do think the US (and the world) should really put the "Golden Rule" as a top priority. So many problems would be non-issues if we did!
The only house still left on my block in Brightmoor is my neighbor's house and his house looks like it's falling down, too. He's still living in it as well because all of us were just barely making it.
I wish I made FAANG money. After taking care of my own debts I wanted to buy our build as many houses for my block as I could and then just let people stay in them no matter how much it costed me ("a fool and his gold are easily separated" and whatnot). I know it's stupid but the one thing I always wanted growing up was just for someone- anyone- to come in and say "we can't treat people like this" and help without considering the business value of helping. So many people spend so much time thinking about how to help (rightfully so) that nobody ACTUALLY ends up helping.
Trying to figure out how to auto classify documents for data loss prevention for non-office doc types in Microsoft Purview (had to call it AIP tho).
I'm a pleb and use OpenAI's ChatGPT site. This is all new to me
I think a huge part of the problem is that as a society we're okay with this. It makes me sad when I think about it- I'm smart enough to acknowledge the problem but too ignorant/stupid/afraid to be a part of the solution.
I now take the approach of "a device is simply another activity" and regulate it just like I do every other activity. I don't do anything special around how the kids use their devices just like how I don't tell them how to run around at the park. As long as the kids meet their responsibilities and nothing glaring jumps out at me from their device logs (I have Suricata set up to alert for problematic network activity and I set up built-in parental controls wherever I can to get weekly summary reports) I don't police them at all.
I try to talk to my kids regularly about how important it is to balance digital and physical hobbies. Time will tell if this pays off since my oldest is only six but doing this gives me "warm and fuzzies" and I get a view my kids' relationship with their devices. I already see a huge improvement in my eldest's attitude to technology where she will willingly give up her devices when asked. A year ago she would throw a temper tantrum if she THOUGHT I was coming to take her tech away because she didn't understand my intentions. My younger two seem to have a healthy relationship with their tech as well but I'm not sure if that's from our discussions or from watching their big sister.
I'd love to collect log data and run that through a SIEM but that's far more expensive than just tossing their devices and pretending they won't be interested in the digital world. At some point you have to ask yourself "what am I trying to do here?" If I can't trust my child to not be an idiot it's far easier for me to just not give them the activity at all until I can provide a safe space for us all to be idiots. If I gave them the tech though I WANT them to fully explore it!
