howlingfantods··on Crying
I cry too but only if something sad happens to someone else. Whenever something bad happens to myself, I just feel numb and try to block out all emotions. But if I read about some injustice or tragedy somewhere in the world, I get all weepy.
howlingfantods··on Crying
Fascinating dataset. I think ending a long term, long distance relationship (and then finding out he was married all along), probabaly skewed this dataset upwards.

Last time I cried was watching the most recent episode of Game of Thrones. And then watching YouTube reaction videos of that episode, a little less crying with each video. Hodor...

Love the idea! Only suggestion would to be switch "Distractive" to "Unproductive" or "Distracting." I'm sure distractive is technically a word, but this is my first time hearing it. But that's just me. I may just have a limited vocabulary.
howlingfantods··on An industry that helps Chinese cheat their way into and through US colleges
Not about cheating, but my friend runs a education consulting service in China and he recently got a call from a father saying that his 20 year old daughter was in the USA studying English but found it too difficult. The father wanted to know if my friend could help his daughter transfer to a school in a country speaking easier English, like Australia. He and his daughter apparently thought Australia spoke some sort of pidgin English that would be easier to learn than American English.
howlingfantods··on Facebook admits rogue employees may have shown bias against conservatives
Reality has a notorious liberal bias. Look at climate change, which went from scientific position to liberal position.

- They advertise 5 days charge but I get maybe 3 days. 4 at best.

- The heartrate reader is only accurate when you're at rest. Any sort of sweat or physical activity and the reading becomes wildly inaccurate or just stops working.

- The app takes like 5-10 minutes to sync every time and it won't sync in the background. So when syncing, I have to move my finger around on the phone so my phone doesn't lock and mess up the sync. I live in China so that might be the issue here. YMMV

- It does auto detect but I have a Vespa scooter so everytime I ride my scooter, it counts it as me walking a shitton of steps and I have to manually go on the website to delete those activities. This is also occasionally an issue in cars.

Overall, just dissatisfied with how this product works.

If this works as well as advertised, I'm definitely tossing my Fitbit Charge HR. What a colossal waste of money that was.
howlingfantods··on TSA gave my MacBook Pro to another passenger at LAX, and now it's gone
To be fair, MacBook Pros pretty much all look the same on the outside. She probabaly just thought it was hers, stuffed it in her bag, and went to catch her flight.
howlingfantods··on In Japan’s Slow Economy, Rare Price Rise Prompts Surplus of Remorse
There are many countries with more visa free travel than the US. And these countries don't have international income tax.
howlingfantods··on Why do so many people hate US airports? (2015)
I'd avoid conflating South/East Asia with China. The only airport the article cites in China is HK airport, and even that is ambiguous. In fact, actual Chinese airports are notorious for delay.
howlingfantods··on Why do so many people hate US airports? (2015)
Everyone should get Global Entry. It makes the process of getting through immigration relatively painless. Additionally, Global Entry allows you to use the TSA Precheck lines, which are orders of magnitude shorter than the regular security lines. Global Entry also recently implemented the ability to apply for an APEC card, which lets you go through the diplomatic passport line at most Asian airports.

There's certainly an ethical debate about paying the government for better service but from a pragmatic standpoint, I can't recommend it enough.

howlingfantods··on How “Pet Sounds” Invented the Modern Pop Album
This is why capitalization is important and willy nilly camel case is not alway great. Here I was thinking literally animal sounds informed the sound of pop music.
howlingfantods··on US Equity crowdfunding is finally here: Steps to getting funded
I don't mean to be rude, but if you read the quote you posted, it directly contradicts your point. Specifically "permitted to provide reviewed rather than audited financial statements." Of course if a company already has audited statements, they have to submit these more rigorous audited statements.
howlingfantods··on Warren Buffett and Dan Gilbert Unite in Bid to Acquire Yahoo
Buffett is no fool. Berkshire is providing the financing to Dan Gilbert's group and will receive guaranteed interest as well as an option to convert to equity. I'm sure that financing is jammed packed with warrants and covenants.

Buffett has basically parlayed the prestige of his name into sweetheart deals with provisions that no other company could get (eg. his investment in Goldman Sachs).

howlingfantods··on US Equity crowdfunding is finally here: Steps to getting funded
No requirement for audited financials, only reviewed financials by a CPA. Which makes this stuff all the more risky.
howlingfantods··on Autonomous corporation “The DAO” has become the biggest crowdfunded project
That's the requirement to be an accredited investor, not to register a small business.
howlingfantods··on Is Ontolo the fastest crawler, parser, indexer?
Why phrase it as a question? The linked article is a PR piece that obviously argues that Ontolo is the fastest crawler, parser, indexer.

The actual article title "400,000,000+ Prospects a Day: Behind the Scenes of ontolo" seems less click baity.

howlingfantods··on US Equity crowdfunding is finally here: Steps to getting funded
You're definitely right that there are many shady penny stocks being traded OTC.

But I fail to see how shady penny stocks justify an even more opaque and less regulated equity market. Regulation is certainly imperfect, but it's much preferable to anarchy.

howlingfantods··on US Equity crowdfunding is finally here: Steps to getting funded
There seems to be serious moral hazard for equity crowdsourcing. Realistically, potential investors don't have to ability to conduct adequate due diligence. The projects seeking funding are likely to be riskier/lower quality since high quality projects will probably pursue traditional VC/angel financing (less hassles, reporting requirements). In the end, you have uninformed investors betting on high risk projects where the entrepreneurs lack any real supervision from said investors.
howlingfantods··on Romanian hacker who claims he breached Clinton server says he spoke with FBI
As far as I can tell, this guy guessed Sydney Blumenthal's AOL account security password and got access to his AOL email account. He then saw emails from Clinton and did an IP scan on her email server. He says he has 2 gigs of data but the article doesn't make clear whether this is from Blumenthal's AOL account of Clinton's email server.

Are there anymore details? This article seems like it's dangling the word "hack" for scaremongering.

howlingfantods··on Romanian hacker who claims he breached Clinton server says he spoke with FBI
According to the State Department, Colin Powell as well as high level aides to Condeleeza Rice handle classified info on their personal email addresses. Clinton is the only one who set up her own private server though.

howlingfantods··on Atari co-founder: mobile games make me want to throw my phone
I played Clash Royale for several days and the insistence on payments to progress was really off putting. The gameplay itself was quite addicting so I presume they're trying to avoid players burning out from binging. But the fact you either had to pay money or wait three hours to do anything of value was just too much to bear. The entire game design is genius in how it funneled you toward purchases.
howlingfantods··on Shopify Capital
Merchant cash advances are technically not loans because you're selling future receivables. The advantage is that these transactions are not regulated like loans and importantly, are exempt from usury laws. That's why annual effective interest rates on MCAs can exceed 100%
howlingfantods··on T. Rowe Price Marks Down Most of Its Tech Startups

howlingfantods··on It’s Time for Microsoft to Turn the Xbox into a PC
tldr: Next gen 4K and VR games require GPUs and CPUs that far exceed the $300-400 price normal for a game console. Microsoft should separate the Xbox into two (or more) lines: a $150-200 media center like Apple TV with no gaming capability, and a higher priced gaming version that could potentially just be a high powered PC running an Xbox app.

Personally, I see his point that the price expectations of game consoles prevent them from effectively running next gen games. However, that's always been the case, with console gaming quality lagging behind PC equivalents. But maybe the advancements with VR and 4K this time around has finally broken the traditional console refresh cycle?

howlingfantods··on Sketch 3.7 released
I tried it many years ago and it was lacking features like pivot tables and scripting. Overall, I got the impression that numbers was more consumer than professional oriented. Haven't used it recently though.
howlingfantods··on Sketch 3.7 released
Sheets is definitely usable but it's a bit light on functionality. I'm using the new Excel for Mac right now and it's just very slow and buggy. Also, the aforementioned alt-key shortcut is absent in the Mac version. Not having these shortcuts literally adds hours to my workday.

I'd probably pay 300-400 dollars for an Excel alternative with full keyboard shortcuts.

howlingfantods··on Sketch 3.7 released
It's a joy to see so many newer, lighter weight but fully featured OSX apps replace the bloated Adobe software suite (eg. sketch, affinity photo, etc.)

Now will someone please, please make a fully featured spreadsheet alternative to Excel on Mac? All I want is to be able to use the alt key ribbon shortcuts...
