houseatrielah··on 280M e-bikes and mopeds are cutting demand for oil far more than electric cars
It is different. if you are very high up there is too much wind for a balcony and you have no relationship with street life (people look like ants). 5-stories aka Paris-size is human scale, anything much taller isn't. The higher the floor, the less frequently people leave their building.

How an Average Family in Tokyo Can Buy a New (detacted single-family) Home (for about $300k in Tokyo Proper) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGbC5j4pG9w

There's more urban dwelling options than just skyscraper.

Low Japanese fertility appears to be a product of their work culture; you don't have time to go on dates if you leave the office at 10pm.

houseatrielah··on 280M e-bikes and mopeds are cutting demand for oil far more than electric cars
I think the root cause is further up the chain of casuality. People need cars because they live in the suburbs, they live in the suburbs because they have children, they want to raise children in more square footage than the urban housing stock offers.

Notable exception being Tokyo

Ironically, if you look NYC in the 1910s, kids used to play baseball in the street because it wasn't yet overrun by cars, suddenly not enough space for kids, so move to the suburbs, which means more and more cars...

houseatrielah··on Silicon Valley's worldview is not just an ideology; it's a personality disorder
>> Far right white supremacism; libertarianism for white men, forced birth for white women. Eugenics for everyone else.

SV heavily promotes DEI, which is newspeak for no white guys. Not my definition of white supremacy.

houseatrielah··on Ask HN: More Co-op games I can carry my 5 year old through?
Some of the old "Sonic: the Hedgehog" games had a 2-player mode where only sonic could die and tails would just respawn. You can't die in "A Short Hike" but its 1-player.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: As a hobbyist developer, what are the odds of getting hired as a pro?
Depends on what salary you are looking for. If you want the coveted FANG jobs, as I understand it, you'll have to grind leetcode. There's a bit of a downturn right now, so don't let that dampen your efforts.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you listen to?
Bankless is an Ethereum podcast. Below is an interesting episode.

houseatrielah··on Ask HN: How to Get Noticed
Its not clear if you want programming help, to be hired, or people to notice your product. People are more polite IRL, you could go to a tech meetup.
houseatrielah··on Gen Z is lonely. Going back to the office may be the cure for some
I think it's the city's fault. People tend to move to the suburbs when they have kids because they are dissatisfied with their options in the US. If people lived close to the office would we be having this conversation? The long-commute both ways kills the office.
houseatrielah··on Food and Generative AI
Maybe its irrational, but some people feel bad about creating a lot of plastic waste for one meal.
houseatrielah··on Sober-curious movement: Non-alcoholic drink options grow
I wonder if there's anything that can pay the rent.

Bars sell a lot of $7 beer and $10 cocktails. Can you make money with tea or another replacement? If bars diminish... will there be another establishment that people go to? or, more likely I fear, everyone will just stay home.

houseatrielah··on Sober-curious movement: Non-alcoholic drink options grow
A shot of vodka has 100 cals. So little volume and so many cals. HopTea is pretty good if you want to drink something beer-adjacent.

houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Where do you sit?
find a place that sells steelcase leap... they should have a chair that works for you
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: What's your bar for ultra wealthy individual and why?
So if I pick F: $10B; we're going to really turn the screws on the deca-billionaires? They are mobile, they can just move to Lichtenstein or Monaco or Singapore, they probably have 20-passports and a private jet already.
houseatrielah··on Costco is now selling gold bars, and they're selling out within hours
I read somwwhere this was credit card cash-back arbitrage; get your 3% back. Although, I'm not sure who you resell it to.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: How would you introduce kids to web dev?
Don't teach them 1997 web dev. Get them a React Udemy course or similar.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Are gut problems behind everything?
This book is changing my brother's family's situation; autistic 4 y/o just started speaking after about 3-weeks on the protocol (first word = ice cream), also the non-verbal 2-y/o started speaking as well (also on protocol). To be fair I haven't read it myself.

houseatrielah··on Balfour Declaration
I wonder if the Sykes-Picot would have been different if Britian didn't have India and an interest in the Suez. Maybe it would have made no difference.
houseatrielah··on Lumalabs AI

houseatrielah··on One Year After the Merge: Sustainability of Ethereum's PoS Is Uncertain
Sustainability in this context means carbon output, not a game-theoretic reason why PoS will fail. There's no content here, author can't quantify anything except number of validators going up means more juice.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Name a non-cryptocurrency blockchain project in use in the real world?
This is a very interesting podcast about stablecoins

houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Do you believe cars are a burden to have?
If cars are a burden where you live, real estate is probably very expensive (walkable areas with good transit are a luxury good). Except Toyko maybe. Can't really exist in the 'burbs without a car.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Name a non-cryptocurrency blockchain project in use in the real world?
People already do it by hoarding US cash or buying real estate (often US real estate is used as a vehicle to store value). Its just a more efficient mechanism. Does it make the situation worse or better? For the individual to preserve the purchasing power its better, for the government is probably somewhat worse since they can't steal all your wealth with inflation, but on the other hand it seems helpful for a government to have a citizenry that's not totally bankrupt.
houseatrielah··on Ask HN: Name a non-cryptocurrency blockchain project in use in the real world?
You're pandering to the "I hate crypto crowd"; you could have asked this on another forum if you wanted a good-faith answer. From my POV the killer-app of crypto is a USD stablecoin. Argentina's currency is collapsing the 3rd time in like 50 years (40% inflation?). There are other financial instruments beyond the dollar that could be tokenized (US Treasuries?), but most of the world would be happy to more-or-less preserve their purchasing power. They will find some vehicle to approximate the perservation of wealth, whether it's mobile phone minutes (an early digital store of value), physical $20-bills or something else.

Non-financial use cases would rely on a blockchain's tamper-resistance: like timestamp hashes for proof that a video happened at a certain time (only useful if this video is alleged to be faked), or something like NameCoin which was a tamper-resistant DNS prototype. Some people are trying to implement digital identity with blockchains, and others are trying to build a social layer in such a way where you own your 'social/friend network' and can view it with any ux you choose.

I think basically all of the marketing-hucksters have rotated into AI (IBM is running ads for AI, not blockchains), so the hype is muted compared to 2017 or so.

houseatrielah··on Europe gives Mark Zuckerberg 24 hours to respond about Israel-Hamas conflict
You say "society", but in practice its a group of unelected bureaucrats engaging in political censorship and regulatory capture.
houseatrielah··on HN goes fit: Whats your strategy to lose weight?
You can use either time (meal-prep) or money (Eat Clean Chicago). If there's an Orange Theory Fitness near you check it out.
houseatrielah··on Apple Plans Smaller, Lighter Vision Headset; Meta Works on Cheaper Quest 3
A sense of presence combined with positional audio should unlock some use cases. Hang out with your favorite podcaster, movies with friends, courtside at the basketball game or MMA fight. Maybe there's a case for virtual travel -- the NeRF models of real places are getting pretty wild. The Lex/Zuckerberg chat was pretty amazing.

Such an ability would be totally classified, its just an observation that measuring ability is increasing. Atomic clocks, etc.
houseatrielah··on [dead]
There's hypersonic missiles and in terms of submarines -- we can detect a wobble of some planet a zillion miles away -- maybe there exists a mechanism to detect subs with increasing precision of instrumentation. The definition of "win" for a western democracy may be very different than the definition of "win" for a Communist government.
houseatrielah··on [dead]
The next war is Russia-China vs West escalated by China invading Taiwan or N. Korea invading S. Korea. Then maybe it goes nuclear... but the only way to win a nuclear war is to win on surprise attack first-strike -- so maybe there will be a surprise attack nuclear exchange before the invasions.

In terms of Israel, maybe they will annex Gaza, but its not a ww3 thing.
