house9-2··on Ask HN: How to prepare as soon-to-be blind developer?
You might want to checkout Talon Voice.

I have used it in the past for hands free coding, there is a steep learning curve but once you get comfortable with it many things can be done faster by voice than with your hands.

Be aware, using your voice all day can be hard on the vocal cords.

house9-2··on Tesla Model 3 Owner Discovers Car Was Delivered Missing a Brake Pad
> Is Porsche electrifying their cars?

They have been producing the Taycan EV for a few years now.

It is expensive and range is OK but not great. Probably an amazing driving experience.

Porsche is way out of my price range, Model 3 LR was a stretch but I have been very happy with the car.

house9-2··on A routine gem update ended up creating $73k worth of subscriptions
Rails 7 has finally added this to active record: sole and find_sole_by

Both raise an exception unless a single record is found.

Of course this would not make a difference when working with mongoid... I also like the fail fast approach.

It really is "that bad".

JIRA is not made for humans.

house9-2··on Tuple: Pair Programming Tool for macOS
$10 for 15-20 hours of usage a month?

Automatically bumps to the $25 price if you go over.

house9-2··on Notes on Software Development Waste
I lean towards a little duplication until it becomes clear that there is real duplication taking place and not 'incidental duplication'.

Read this quote somewhere:

Make the code DRY, but not so DRY it chafes.

house9-2··on Myths in cycling: wider tires are slower
I've got about 500 miles on my Diverge (and the Pathfinders) the tires ride great.

- Good on the road, even cornering is decent which was unexpected with light tread.

- Great on gravel: flat, uphill, downhill, and cornering

- Decent on single track

I think maybe they get a bad rap because they are on the heavy side for the price? When the time comes for new tires not sure if I will get another pair or try out something different.

house9-2··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
Tesla Model 3 Long Range

Been dreaming of being able to drive without using gasoline for decades, that dream is now a reality.

Is it a perfect car - nope, but there really isn’t another car like it right now.

house9-2··on Half a million lines of Go
> i don't think dependency management is great in any language. Ruby is terrible!

If you use bundler and Gemfile.lock everything 'just works' in Ruby.

Node/npm/yarn is a nightmare

house9-2··on Most and Least Affordable Places to Buy a Home
> Oregon has no sales tax, are everyday items more expensive.

Nope.

At least I didn't notice that when I lived there (2012 - 2017).

Income tax is higher than most states but still less than California.

house9-2··on The mortifying ordeal of pairing all day
There is no deodorant that can suppress my BO, I just end up smelling like BO with a hint of deodorant.

Luckily for my coworkers I am usually remote.

house9-2··on Ask HN: How Long Is Your CI Process?
Large ruby on rails application. Entire test suite takes around 40 minutes to run, however we use circleCI and parallelize the build so realtime is around 10 minutes.

What makes the build so slow is that the database is involved, if you want fast builds decouple your unit tests from the database. With rails including the database access in tests makes everything easier and you get closer to real-life execution but slow ...

> create a longer lived branch and make small PRs to that.

I follow this pattern a lot, we call it an epic branch and usually name it something like `epic/foobar`

house9-2··on The True Meaning of Technical Debt (2020)
Great article!
house9-2··on The True Meaning of Technical Debt (2020)
> if you do a quick and dirty code for a feature that never gets used (or dropped). Is that technical debt?

Yes, code that is not being used should be deleted as soon as possible. Even if it was the cleanest code ever written - delete it.

It is adding massive mental overhead for future work, especially as a new developer on the project - how do I know its not being used?

house9-2··on Setting up Starlink
> 100/16 Mbps is pretty decent I guess

Its fantastic, can't wait until this is available where I live. Currently paying $200+ a month for 20Mbps from local wireless company.

2 miles North from here there is AT&T fiber and Comcast available, 5 miles South there is Comcast (150Mbps) but I'm in a small community of homes where only options are satellite or fixed wireless.

house9-2··on Our app was banned because the button says “Report User” and not just “Report”
Yeah, locked my primary account and the admin account. There was no option to use any recovery options that I could see.

And today I get an email saying my accounts are now enabled?

The computers are definitely in control.

Glad I was forced to move away at this point, locking accounts is one thing, but bouncing emails not cool.

house9-2··on Our app was banned because the button says “Report User” and not just “Report”
Same thing happened to me yesterday, I had to switch my MX records over to fastmail as that was easier than trying to figure out how to resolve the issue with Google directly.

I had been forwarding all of my email from my domain to my personal Gmail (the irony) so haven't lost anything except a Sundays worth of incoming emails which bounced.

In my case I was still using a free account for my custom domain, grandfathered in. I guess I get what I paid for...

house9-2··on China’s $4k electric cars tap huge market Tesla can’t reach
This is a pretty good article on ICE vs EV

house9-2··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
If you are on a project with more than one person having some kind of process is a good thing.

‘Agile’ gives you the flexibility to determine what that process is. Scrum is a different story.

house9-2··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
> We would make estimates, and be told they weren't commitments.

Yeah, this is ridiculous; Scrum actually changed the term from ‘Commitment’ to ‘Forecast’ back in 2011. But the industry didn’t pay attention to that minor but important change.

house9-2··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
> Strong ownership and trust between engineer and product owners, both way.

Trust has to be the most important ingredient for a successful project regardless of the project management process, if you have trust any process can work well.

Agree about Team Size, less people less communication is needed which results in less misunderstandings == more productivity.

house9-2··on Why Working from Home Will Stick [pdf]
Working remotely does not stop collaboration. I have been working primarily remote for the past 12 years. I meet with my team every day for standup and am in constant contact with team members throughout the day, sometimes pair programming or helping to debug issues.

This is not much different than working in a colocated situation, except my coworkers don't have to smell my B.O.

The tooling available these days makes remote work better than in person IMO.

house9-2··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Not sure why you are being downvoted for this, I 100% agree.
house9-2··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
If I recall it was initially a self released pay how much you want download.

I believe this was a 'first' and there was more hype about that than the album itself.

In Rainbows is my favorite Radiohead album for sure, closely followed by the Bends.

house9-2··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Rogue 1 is great, how many mainstream movies kill off everyone at the end of the movie - brilliant!
house9-2··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
One of my favorites from HBO.

The first time I watched it the first few episodes felt a little weak (like a network tv cop show), almost gave up on it but glad I didn't.

house9-2··on Tesla's market cap now accounts for roughly 1/3rd of the global automaker market
Tesla is making big investments in building factories, both for cars and batteries. Those numbers should increase significantly over next 5 years.

They have more vertical integration, less reliance on suppliers.

They own their 'dealership', charging network and are also getting into auto insurance.

Also, residential solar and energy storage. Oh yeah and they are getting into mining as well to ensure they can keep up the battery production.

How many of those 92 million cars are EV? Tesla isn't really in competition with ICE car production - the next ten years is all about EV production and legacy car makers are off the back.
