hos234··on Reddit, where chaos thrives, tries to clean up to attract ads from big brands
The "real mess" of society is different from what social media has created.

Social media has added a new dimension to complexity in society, by adding a number(upvote/click/like/view/retweet etc) next to every thought and utterance.

Those numbers amplify behaviors both good and bad.

People who say social media exposes the real mess, make it easy for social media companies to deny their contribution to the mess.

When they start removing like counts (and it's taken way to long for this move) they are basically admitting their contribution to the mess.

As data of the last 15 years gets analyzed, on the impact of these numbers on individual and group psychology, expect major class action suits against these companies.

hos234··on Avoid Working Alone
The world is full of people trapped doing meaningless robotic things as it is. On top of it they are all living longer wondering what the fuck for. Just ask a friendly neighbourhood shrink for the stats.

Your kind of advice my friend contributes to the trap.

hos234··on As a non-technical founder, should I enroll in a coding bootcamp?
Only if you find it interesting or if its causing issues, otherwise its a waste of time. Be clear about what strengths you bring to the table and work on those. If you have a sales background for example hone that craft. Let the techies do the tech, the same way you let the lawyers do the legal stuff.

hos234··on How can we develop transformative tools for thought?
Programmers/computer scientists will make better progress on "transformative" "tools of thought" if they spend a few years collaborating with psychologists/sociologists/political scientists/economists/historians on their problems first.

Those that do will have a leg up over those that dont.

Right now it's like watching people working on calculus without spending enough time on algebra and geometry.

hos234··on Breaking Bubbles. Europe, We Need to Talk
I get along with people who I disagree with usually when we both share goals. Actual achievable ones. Like winning at team sports, fundraising for x, putting up a play, shipping a product etc. I think initiatives like these need that component.
hos234··on Ask HN: How do you use university?
Go work for a Prof or a Research Lab on campus. Most of them are always short of labour. You will find interesting conversations going on day and night. In some labs more conversations than any work even.
hos234··on Leaked Zuckerberg audio: 'You go to the mat and you fight'
It will naturally break apart just as news media broke apart along liberal and conservative, national and regional lines. There have been and continue to be attempts to consolidate news into as few orgs as possible. But beyond a 'tipping point' consolidation fails even though it's technically and economically more efficient. Because it's socially inefficient. (Same is true of religions and nations btw as population grows differences grow too and then things break). Even in democracies you can constantly see this breakage going as districts and counties across the world keep having their boundaries redrawn.

Many newspapers have died out because the more inter networked we get it's more efficient to consolidate. Info flows around gatekeepers as the network gets more and more connected. Yet notice how we have so many news sources divided along social differences. They resist merging with each other.

Those same forces resist consolidation of 6 billion people onto a single network.

This has already happened with China, Russia, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, North Korea etc where the differences are stark. Many countries are already demanding local data centers. As soon as that happens it's guaranteed some political entity will misuse the data to hold onto power and further pressure builds.

Give it time and few more elections where one side has to loose (we will see many more Obama/Trump/Brexit type event where one group goes viral and beats another) and the pressure on the consolidated network will keep growing from the disappointed parties. This is still early days in the history of a social network.

Niall Ferguson's book The Square and the Tower is full of examples from history of how networks of people grown, merge and break apart. Highly recommended for anyone interested in this stuff.

hos234··on Hundreds of thousands of people read novels on Instagram
I get the users are just looking for ways of doing thing they like. Many won't know what features are available elsewhere. Sooner or later they will start grumbling about it.

And then expect Zuck and his henchmen, to come up with retarded round about ways to provide the features. "We pay close attention to our cattle. Our new AI based cloud OCR can identify upto 40% of all words on a single page! You can even copy and paste some of them etc etc".

I personally don't like reading books on the Kindle or Phone but do find the bookmarking/lookup/navigation features very useful and of course the ability to store a zillion books. Given all those advantages expect some Facebook exec to start drawing up master plans.

hos234··on Hundreds of thousands of people read novels on Instagram
They have broken the internet by banning hyperlinks. So naturally everything starts happening inside the app. How would you do copy a quote, table of contents or term lookups? I can't even check out the links u posted cause it asks me to login.
hos234··on Engineer admits hacking Yahoo accounts searching for images
Not just contractors. In most parts of the world there will be a 20 year old, with 3 months of "security training" paid less than $1000 a month, running around the data center with keys to the castle.
hos234··on A large number of Stack Exchange mods resigning over new policies
Misguided yet understandable conclusion.

People enjoy doing things for others. It's a deep Need people have. If mass violence and wars, natural disasters of all kinds through the ages, have not been able to make us more selfish and wipe out that need, internet drama is not going to either.

The process is messy sure, and if you are experiencing it for the first time it can be confusing, repulsive and misleading. It's not a good idea to follow those feelings and make conclusions. Because those conclusions will obscure from your view, the reasons why anything good happens in the world.

hos234··on Are We Living in a Post-Happiness World?
It's like watching children pick 3-4 random things off the internet, weave a connection between them, and then broadcast the creation to millions of people. Well done nytimes. Keep it up.
hos234··on Ask HN: If life is just a short period of time between birth and dead?
So you are saying the Matrix script should have had Keanu just heading to the beach, and not being thrown into one adventure after another, to discover himself? hmm...that would have made an interesting movie.
hos234··on Ask HN: If life is just a short period of time between birth and dead?
:) Nothing too interesting. Probably snooze by the sea with close access to good food, good books and certain people I care about.
hos234··on Ask HN: If life is just a short period of time between birth and dead?
We "bother so much" when our needs (or values) are not met. We also get bothered a lot when the needs of people we care about are not met.

Notice that most people whose needs are met don't "bother so much".

hos234··on A.I. researchers are making more than $1M, even at a nonprofit
$$$ always depends on who your prof knows, what connections the lab has with industry and the contacts you make.
hos234··on Ask HN: How do you work with the fear of your own incompetence?
It's hard to overcome a fear, if one is surrounded by people triggering fear or handling their own fears in unproductive ways. Many do this unconsciously so don't judge.

Lot of folk take advantage of other's insecurities because it works. And because it works, they train others to follow their methods. And that leads to a culture of fear.

So be conscious of who you are dealing with. Otherwise it can get very confusing.

Trust and respect are key. Find people you trust and respect based on their behavior towards others. They will be your sources of confidence and reduce your sensitivity to different types of triggers.

hos234··on An erroneous paper on religion and generosity is retracted
It's not sad, it's great.

The history of science is full of drama where most issues took multiple generations to resolve. It's easy to forget, in those interim periods, people would build all kinds of castles on total BS all the time that cost society in so many ways.

Today stuff gets resolved faster and that's a good thing. People, qualified or not, who get carried away by hype or bias look foolish much much faster. And thanks to how hard it is to erase mistakes from the internet good luck rebuilding lost cred.
