hos234··on The Rise of the Comfort College
What has changed since you were in college, is that everyone is much more hooked into a network, where every misguided thought or utterance is broadcast to everyone on the network, and immediately pseudo evaluated through likes/views/retweets/upvotes etc. That was never the case, when I went to college and said/thought/did misguided things all the time.

It's the wrong architecture to educate anyone. The only thing such environments, do is produce insecurity, defensiveness and rebellion on large scales. The reaction to which is "safe spaces, trigger warnings, and microaggressions". And then we get reactions to those reactions, rather than focusing on the underlying change in architecture that has happened.

hos234··on For Online Courses, Questions Over How Success is Measured (2014)
People who "successfully" teach themselves are overrated (good examples being Trump or Zuckerberg). They might be successful in a few dimensions (purely out of self discipline and above avg energy levels) but totally miseducated in many others because people don't know what they don't know. Without the right guides, feedback processes, environment and time(lots of time) most people usually end up taking all kinds of wrong turns.

Education not something intuitive, even if there are many paths. If it was we would just be leaving kids in libraries.

hos234··on Richard Stallman challenges 'misleading' coverage of his comments on Minsky
It's very valuable in building up evidence that naming and shaming doesn't work.

And also gives us a clear count, within a population how many people will continue to do it anyway.

As regulation of news media and social media are being designed, one of the big questions is what to do about that part of the population.

Most of them are triggered and trapping themselves on treadmills that go nowhere. And most of them need help getting off that treadmill.

hos234··on Saudi Arabia Shuts Down About Half Its Oil Output After Drone Strikes
How do they know how far the drone flew? Could be just Lawrence of Arabia on a camel crossing the desert and launching from outside the compound wall for all anyone knows.
hos234··on Microsoft President: Democracy Is At Stake. Regulate Big Tech
Zuckerberg & Co are going to play the 'we will loose to China card'. Which is going to slow down any kind of regulations...

What's weird is, why there is no great rumbling against China's big tech within China. By now Chinese big tech should have wrecked the same unintended consequences and damage as American big tech. Whats going on there?

I am guessing once things blow up there then we see global consensus on regulating Big Tech.

hos234··on Shift the focus from the super-poor to the super-rich
Elon is building starships, to shoot them off into space. Maybe that's a solution.

That said, changing the minds and behavior of 42 million people doesn't actually seem that complicated. Marketing depts are constantly targeting this segment. We know what their weaknesses are. Just requires a bit of world wide coordination and planning.

hos234··on Saudi Arabia oil facilities ablaze after drone strikes
This is just US strikes - https://www.longwarjournal.org/us-airstrikes-in-the-long-war

The rest of the world I guess will catch up sooner or later.

hos234··on Facebook removed a fact-check on anti-abortion video after Ted Cruz complained
The US is just much much larger than all other Western democracies. Sensitive topics are going to be much more political and take their time to resolve. It's like comparing how a group of 10 people resolve issues versus a group of 300. The dynamics are very different given the information asymmetry.
hos234··on Deterministic thinking: a problem in how we think, not just in how we act
Your reasoning was fine until you jumped to your "doomed forever" conclusion. Clearly nothing is doomed forever if things like killing and racism are reducing.

Your theory explains why people misunderstand each other and are "doomed" to states of conflict due to how their minds work. It needs to go further to explain how good outcomes are produced despite conflict and misunderstanding.

Why do they accept "simple and blunt rules"? Where are these rules coming from? Why aren't the rules pushing people in the opposite direction? Are there other mechanisms beyond imposing simple and blunt rules on everyone? etc etc etc Don't be satisfied with your theory. It's a good start but keep digging.

hos234··on Deterministic thinking: a problem in how we think, not just in how we act
Yet we are not ruled by Genghis Khan or Hitler. How come?
hos234··on Anduril, a startup from Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, now valued at $1B
Everybody is a speech maker these days. It's basically a Trump tactic that everyone is blindly reusing.

Which is why Trump will probably win the next election.

Cause if the game is all about pandering, naming/shaming, blaming, guilt tripping and triggering people he is better that anyone else.

Change the rules of the game please. Don't play the game he wants you to play.

hos234··on Norway's Bold Plan to Tackle Overtourism
This is an Ad. For tourism.
hos234··on Society Is Built on Abstraction
This is usually studied as Information Asymmetry problems - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_asymmetry

In the modern info overload context, the asymmetries between people are amplified and just telling people they "should" reduce the asymmetry is not enough.

It's a very hard problem and most people don't know how to do it, or do it well enough to produce good outcomes. Good news is as data on people's behavior and thinking pours in fields like sociology, psychology, communication, network theory etc are all coming up with experiments on how to do this stuff better.

hos234··on Hong Kong Exchanges Bids $39B to Take over London Stock Exchange
Well Hong Kong is basically owned and run by real estate billionaires. And it looks like they are doing a little hedging before China tightens some scews. Few weeks back they bought UK's largest pub operator.
hos234··on Hong Kong can be a gateway to liberal values for China
How liberated they want to be, we will find out after the Dec 15th tariffs hit and what happens to their currency.

Lot's of people are going to take a hit and no one knows how many are going to unhappy about that.

hos234··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
I would agree if there was something radical from others. It's all been incremental from everyone ever since the iPhone 4. So it's not a CEO thing. There really isn't any new feature that the masses need from these devices anymore.

That said, as you can see from the thunderous applause after every sentence in that auditorium, the herd laps up dull shit.

hos234··on Michael Bloomberg launches $160M initiative to ban flavored e-cigarettes
I am waiting for Cambridge Analytica 2.0 that purely targets and triggers billionaires.
hos234··on NSA Official: We Need to Prepare for the Future of War
Keep an eye open for more Trump and Brexit style events. You don't need a nation state to trigger them.

That's the future of war.

hos234··on NSA Official: We Need to Prepare for the Future of War
Translates to - We don't know what we are doing or why but please keep funding us.

Henry Kissinger pls talk to Kim Kardashian, and the marketing departments of the world. They will have better ideas on how to fight the next war than anyone who has traditionally fought one. What ever you do don't talk to techies. As Chinese Intelligence is showcasing in Hong Kong, building giant machinery that vacuums up oceans of data does diddly squat.

hos234··on Scientists Discover New Evidence of the Asteroid That Killed Off the Dinosaurs
Just wondering...if the dinos had survived, would they have evolved higher intelligence and complex societies or would they be similar to modern reptiles/crocs/turtles and fish(which are as old no?) in terms of intelligence?
hos234··on Is There a Case for Skepticism of Psychedelic Therapy?
These days once a herd has assembled, you just got to cheer them on, in whatever mindless direction they are stampeding in.

If they are going to fall off a cliff, the faster it happens, the better for everyone.

hos234··on India Loses Contact with Probe Just as It Prepares to Land on Moon
Things are moving in that direction - https://www.globalspaceexploration.org/wordpress/?p=940
hos234··on M.I.T. Media Lab concealed its relationship with Jeffrey Epstein
It's hard to say whether its good or bad right now. Give it a few years.

Social norms are changing very quickly these days in ways no one expected. Look at the polls on acceptance of gay marriage prior to 2000 and today. There is a big shift, not just in the US. Hard to believe such shifts can happen in such time scales, if you read old sociology text books.

What is different today is how connected society is and how fast social pressure can build up. And thats having effects people haven't seen before - good and bad.

hos234··on What’s it like to live on less than $2 a day?
They do.

Its a robotic form of expression you see everywhere these days. People are trained how to do one thing well for one context. They take that blindly and apply it to everything they see whether it fits or not. They do it blindly because thats what all the other "educated" folk are doing.

Jaron Larnier has a nice term for it - digital maoism.

You see it in how Journalists and news orgs behave when you visit poorer countries. They are all trying to be CNN in fancy suits and surrounded by flashy graphics covering a cancer ward with no electricity. You see it in the Entrepreneurs and Engineers who want to emulate Apple or Google, more worried about the smoothness of GUI and the typography and icons than thinking about why an uneducated poor person needs it.

While this cognitive dissonant prettification style is all pervasive, whats really interesting is not everyone falls for it. Somehow nature has ensured populations will always have people who go the other way. And thank god for them.

hos234··on India to Attempt Moon Landing at the Lunar South Pole Today
Anyone know how cost effective this is? As in can NASA start outsourcing moon missions?
hos234··on There are no adults in the room
Well the "Adults" in the room are the ones who don't run out "once the maelstrom of chaos and uncertainty arrives". Most people we call adults do.
hos234··on Lego to open 160 new stores as other toy retailers suffer
Well I am salty. And I can't stand what how consumerist LEGO has become. Plus I don't like evangelists. Instead of allowing kids to figure out the value of something themselves, they fill their heads with bullet points about what they are supposed to like about a product.
hos234··on Show HN: I wrote an example based guide to teach Awk. Would love feedback
Your gitbook link is pointing at a Go tutorial.
hos234··on Show HN: Quadiq – A Simple, Relaxing, Strategy Game
