hollowdene··on Apple Will Revamp Siri to Catch Up to Its Chatbot Competitors
Apple: We're going to build an incrediably powerful AI than runs locally on your phone.

Users: Hey Siri, set a 30 minute timer.

hollowdene··on Apple M4 launching in an iPad is a great sign for Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite
Source: The author's wild speculation.
hollowdene··on EA CEO: "Real hunger" among developers to use AI to speed up development
On the one hand, gaming is one of the few industries where generative AI can have a big impact on producitivity today. It's easy to be cynical, but used well it could reverse the trend of excessively expensive AAA game development.

On the other hand, who would trust the CEO of EA / EA in general not to do all the wrong things with AI to save a buck.

TL;DR: Generative could help a lot, but big publishers will use it the worse ways possible.

hollowdene··on One year of using an Apple Watch Ultra as a phone replacement
Nokia 3310 would be cheaper
hollowdene··on Call to shut down Bristol schools’ use of app to ‘monitor’ pupils and families
I feel like the correct answer is proper oversight of how the system is used, not a blanket shutdown in case it's misused. Perhaps these charities who complaining should be involved in that?

The goal of the service seems sensible, especially when you consider how often public services have made serious mistakes due to "information silos".

hollowdene··on Posthog ending support for self-hosted on May 31
Full details here: https://posthog.com/blog/sunsetting-helm-support-posthog

The open source Docker Compose deployment is unaffected.

Security updates on the last available version of the Kubernetes deployment will continue for at least the next 12 months.

hollowdene··on Show HN: A little side project, a watercolor art generator
Can't see myself paying $5.99 for one of these, but it's nice. I appreciated the fun messages in the progress bar.

PS: Congrats on the little one. :D

hollowdene··on Elon learns the hard way being a Twitter troll is way more fun than being a mod
It's almost like he didn't want to buy it after all, but now he's kind of stuck with it...
hollowdene··on Excess death from around the world due to Covid
This is quite a flawed and obviously biased analysis.

To use just one example. If the UK hadn't had locked down when it did, it's likely the entire health service would have collapsed, leading to more excess AND Covid deaths.

Unlike the author, I don't pretend to have the answer, but anyone with a functioning brain can see this "analysis" is without merit.

hollowdene··on Elon Musk denies he spoke to Putin about Ukraine war
In isolation, no. But this + someone explicitly saying Musk told them he spoke to Putin is more convincing.

This is all a bit of a side show, though, for all the reasons you outlined.

hollowdene··on London’s Fix for Air Pollution: Making Drivers Pay Up
Car congestion makes public transport and other less polluting forms transport (e.g. walking, cycling) less effective / attractive.

Public transport is the most efficient way to increase bandwidth.

hollowdene··on Elon Musk denies he spoke to Putin about Ukraine war
And yet his ability to repeat Russian propaganda tropes was uncannily accurate...
hollowdene··on London’s Fix for Air Pollution: Making Drivers Pay Up
Income gets reinvested in the transport infrastructure, e.g. public transport.

Ultimately, only public transport can "solve" congestion and air pollution. It was interesting to see Uber references heavily in this. Uber is a significant contributor to increased congestion and pollution in cities, no matter what it might claim.

hollowdene··on Joe Rogan Interviews Steve Jobs
Yeah. The first few seconds of Rogan talking were pretty decent, but Jobs doesn't sound right at all, mainly because of the dialogue specifically.

But I do kind of get the hype.

hollowdene··on UK opens up 'high-potential individual route' for tech worker immigration
All good points. I think the list of universities is rather reductive, but I'd rather have this policy than nothing at all.
hollowdene··on UK opens up 'high-potential individual route' for tech worker immigration
Yeah, fair. This is more global in nature and could have been done while we were in the EU, too.

The broader point is this is a salve for the skills shortage caused by leaving the EU.

You've also perfectly illustrated why basing this on an arbitrary top 50 is stupid in the extreme, but this is government we have.

hollowdene··on UK opens up 'high-potential individual route' for tech worker immigration
Smart companies will go remote and cut out the middle man, which amusingly the UK gov is discouraging as well.

This is better than nothing, but being in the EU was still better. Sigh.

hollowdene··on [dead]
Looking forward to full self driving when it arrives in 2014.
hollowdene··on Elon vs. the Twitter Bots
Elon: OMG, there are so many bots (probably)

Also Elon: Due diligence is for plebs

hollowdene··on Why Google is so unbearable, and how to fix it
In this specific case, it's a great example of how Google's attempts to keep people on Google has made search worse.

It's showing this result as a featured snippet because it's easy to distil into steps, and Google is hoping you'll just read the result and not leave Google.

The real 'no.1 result' is this much better article from a trusted UK-based motoring organization: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/car-maintenance/how-to-ch...

Of course, Google's attempts to stop you leaving, and hoover up as much of the ad market as possible, also drives publishers to ever more desperate things to make money.

hollowdene··on [dead]
"An unverified tweet has been making waves, claiming the country will remove itself from the international online community on March 11."

Not exactly solid.

hollowdene··on Macron refused Russian Covid test in Putin trip over DNA theft fears – sources
I see why he wouldn't want that, but what Russia / anyone do with DNA? Someone please educate me here...
hollowdene··on Amazon Has Received $4.7B in Subsidies Globally, Watchdog Says
Reminds me of this article about an economist who argues that state investment (not long geniuses) is the real driver of innovation: https://www.wired.co.uk/article/mariana-mazzucato
hollowdene··on Ten Years of ThinkPadding
I used to review laptops for a living and it's baffled me for a decade how Windows is still so bad at this. Last Windows laptop I had was an XPS 13 and I resorted to turning it off to avoid the "heat the bag" problem. M1 MacBook Air is basically the only laptop 95% of people should buy (assuming they can afford it)
hollowdene··on Days of Reckoning (Why the UK energy cap failed)
I feel like the purpose of the cost cap is kind if misconstrued here, too. It was mostly in place to ensure the poorest people, who are often on PAYG meters and the worst tariffs, don't pay way over market rates. It was never designed to stop the kind of huge increases in costs we're seeing now.

One thing is for sure, we desperately need to ween ourselves off natural gas. Switching to heat pumps etc. for heating can't come soon enough.

hollowdene··on Apple's privacy push cost Meta $10B
Video on Facebook is still very big, though. A lot of publishers have taken to recycling TikTok videos and turning them into compilations for Facebook and Instagram. It's all low quality stuff, but it works. It's hugely ironic that some of the most popular content on Facebook's platforms is coming from TikTok.
hollowdene··on Apple's privacy push cost Meta $10B
I agree. Some businesses are addicted to Facebook and the data it provides, but they certainly have no right to it.
hollowdene··on Apple's privacy push cost Meta $10B
There's a whole ecosystem of businesses that rely on Facebook that are going to start hurting a lot over the next few years.

I used to work at a publisher where 80% of their website traffic came from Facebook. They haven't seen audience growth in years and their audience is skewing older and older, which is bad for their advertising business

Businesses like that are going to get steadily squeezed both by Facebook's declining audience share and Facebook's own efforts to change what people see.
