holdenk··on Amazon's Profit Plunges 73%
Its been awhile since I took an accounting class, but lets say my cost of producing the kindle fire was $20 and my expected ability to sell it was at $15, I would book my kindle inventory at $15 on the books even though its acquisition cost was higher (i.e. you put it on your books at the lower of acquisition cost and expected disposal value). This has only been part a GAAP since 1990 though.
holdenk··on "Unknown or expired link." - Why?
The PLT-Scheme (aka Racket) folks do this. Its kind of awesome, and I used it for a side project. It works pretty well except some browsers have a max url length, so you can only safely shove so much data to the client side, and then your stuck with old fashion IDs again. Still lots of fun to play with :)

I'm kind of curious as to what sort of performance improvements your normally able to get for people?

Oh excellent. I only looked at Net::GitHub initially, but Pithub looks more interesting.

Your whitespace bot looks nifty :) Will you post the results when you start running it?

Sorry the perl code is so poor, it was a post-clubbing quick-hack type project. I'll clean it up when I have some free time again :)
holdenk··on That truck driver you flipped off? Let me tell you his story.
Well arguably it makes sense to run rail lines to ports (and from what I've seen of ports this is not uncommon), since multi-modal transport is pretty common.
holdenk··on The FBI stole an Instapaper server in an unrelated raid
I've had the "joy" of doing password migrations in the past when moving authentication systems. We made our auth chain support both methods and then when someone logged in with an old method it stored the password in the new method and deleted the old record. This was on a system with only a few hundred users though, so YMMV.

You should come swing by the foursquare offices sometime if your bored, I'll get you a fresh pack of bacon if you give me a heads up :)
holdenk··on Why I Want Google Offers And The Entire Daily Deals Business To Die
Current daily deals make the cash-flow situation worse for small business. Public information suggests that the merchants are paid somewhere between 30 to 90 days after the deal has run. While this is normal for B2B relationships, in the past those merchants were involved in B2C where they were paid up front.

holdenk··on After botched child porn raid, judge sees the light on IP addresses
The case for MAC spoofing being common (at least with people "borrowing" your wi-fi) makes sense because some networks have MAC address based white lists, so this defense isn't quite as crazy as it sounds at first. IANAL etc.
holdenk··on Sony: All personal data stolen from PSN
If the attacker "0wned" the servers the fact there was encryption between you and the server doesn't really help a whole lot, they can just insert them selves in the stack post encryption (or even use the private key to decrypt the encrypted traffic if they wanted to minimize the number of points they touched).
holdenk··on Etsy users irked after buyers, purchases exposed to the world
I could see that possible being a concern where the reason why people are upset isn't obvious, but this is not one of those cases.
holdenk··on Etsy users irked after buyers, purchases exposed to the world
It seems like a reasonable response to say "if they don't fix this today I'm never using them again", etsy took information which people had assumed was private and made it public. If they respond quickly and take steps to ensure something like this doesn't happen again then I might consider using them again. One of the fastest ways to influence a profit driven enterprise is to make it clear that there actions mean you will no longer give them money (either by no longer shopping on etsy or listing on etsy).

I also take issue with your statement that "this is a relatively small issue", while the items I personally bought on etsy are fairly mundane I don't want my shopping history to be easily googleable. How would you feel if the local XXX store started posting pictures of all of the customers in the news paper (or even just putting them up on the web)?

holdenk··on EFF's 21st Birthday Party
Its pretty tempting, I'm up in SEA, but the middle of the week thing makes it a bit tricky for me. If there are other people from Seattle thinking about going though that could be fun.
holdenk··on Hipmunk’s Official Round: $4.2 Million Led By Ignition & Online Travel Experts
So I tried that, while the UI looks nice, it certainly falls flat in the actual functioning component of the UI.

For example I have to click on the search button next to the greyed out text to enter anything, and for Seattle the first suggestion is the seaplan airport. Again in Toronto it suggested the city center airport, which while a nice airport only has mostly domestic flights and even then only one commercial airline. It also required me to enter a seperate flight back (when I tried clicking for a return date it suggested another one way flight from Seattle). That being said, it may work better in Russia, I noticed the prices returned were in rubbles.

A lot of window managers don't really deal with NFS timeouts/errors very well. One solution is something like AFS, but that comes with a whole host of issues.

holdenk··on How do you help promote a friend's product?
I have no experience with non-web based stuff, but I have had o.k. results with press releases (with p.r. web and writing on my own) for new product launches.

I've also had pretty good luck with contacting individual reporters, so she might want to try and get in touch with the local fashion or business editors.

holdenk··on Ask HN: Anyone know how you can get a Google dev phone to make Android apps?
You can of course buy one. Or even just use the emulator (if your writing fairly simple applications this may be enough).

When I read this I thought you were over exagerating, but on first glance of looking at there website it certainly wasn't clear it was an investment product (however the statement next to the SIPC insurance makes it fairly clear if you read all the way to the end).

I strongly encourage people to read the release notes before upgrading, there are backwards incompatible changes from 1.1
holdenk··on [dead]
As awesome as the new CSRF functionality is, it has a bit of a gotcha with upgrading (some preexisting forms will fail), so if you are moving from 1.1 to 1.2 keep that in mind.
