hn111··on A faster way to calculate the day of the week
Amazing mnemonics, thank you for sharing. Do you practice this as a mental exercise, or do you actually need to know the day of the week for a specific date that often?
hn111··on A faster way to calculate the day of the week
“All of that is math you can easily do in your head in seconds.”

It takes me way too long and I still have to use my fingers nowadays

hn111··on "Solving a largely imaginary user goal"
I always switch to a light theme when the sun is shining on my screen
hn111··on Grok 4.6
You hit the nail on the head, and it matters.
hn111··on LLM Honeypot
That <div class="marquee-box"> with `animation: scroll-left 18s linear infinite;` is just plain disrespect to the still working <marquee> element.
hn111··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
It’s too bad Apple made the option to install a website as a webapp so hard to find. It’s now hidden in ‘Share’ > ‘View more’ > ‘Add to home screen’

This has nothing to do with ‘sharing’ something

hn111··on Satellite Tracker – Live Map of Starlink and 30k Satellites
Half a year ago, I captured a photograph of a long train of satellites. However, when I navigate to that location using this tool, I don’t see any satellite train present at that specific timestamp.

I wonder if there are other satellites not included in this dataset, or if I should search way further from the location on the map

hn111··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
You can send them this: https://noslopgrenade.com
hn111··on I hate soldering
I got into soldering as a child, but never learned how to do it properly. Years later I found this comic-book-style guide somewhere online, which made it quite easy to do without messing it up: https://mightyohm.com/files/soldercomic/FullSolderComic_EN.p...
hn111··on Talking to strangers at the gym
Even written these jokes made me smile, you’re a natural!
hn111··on Uber torches 2026 AI budget on Claude Code in four months
Where is level 2?
hn111··on Tailscale's new macOS home
You can use `delete` instead of `write`:

defaults -currentHost delete -globalDomain NSStatusItemSpacing

hn111··on Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act: Dangerous backdoor surveillance risks remain
Regarding banning platforms I’d say just ban the attention driven business model online by forbidding all social media platforms from serving ads entirely.
hn111··on Bugs Apple loves
Just typing on iOS randomly inserts the wrong characters: https://youtu.be/hksVvXONrIo

I thought it was just me until someone mentioned this on HN

hn111··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
Same here, I've found too many bugs in Proton's email client and instead of fixing them they just release new products. FastMail support has been great, I think the developers themselves reply (some of the?) emails, going into technical details and being actually helpful.
hn111··on Replacing JavaScript with Just HTML
I’ve tried replacing my modal components with the <dialog> element, but had to reverse everything due to this issue: https://github.com/whatwg/html/issues/9936

In short: you can’t have an interactive popover (e.g. a toast notification) on top of a dialog modal.

I’d love to use the new native elements but we’re sadly not quite there yet.

hn111··on Show HN: WalletWallet – create Apple passes from anything
One CSS tip: make sure the input fields have a minimum font-size of 16px. That way iOS won’t zoom-in the page when focussing one.
hn111··on Backing up Spotify
This works nicely: https://github.com/spotDL/spotify-downloader
hn111··on Steam Frame
Opening it in private tabs should help, at least on iOS.
hn111··on Retiring Windows 10 and Microsoft's move towards a surveillance state
Perhaps https://zorin.com/os/ might be a nice distro for your customers. It has 2 UI options: one that is close to macOS and one that looks more like Windows.
hn111··on Apple M5 chip
I’ve been having the same idea for a while. I think it would be a great way to let them prioritize the stability a bit more by publicly displaying how shamefully the UI behaves.

Interested in collaborating on this? Perhaps a simple open-source static blog built with Astro?

hn111··on Kagi News
I used to love Proton, but they focus too much on feature development instead of stability and fixing long-standing bugs. E.g. zooming has been broken for years in ProtonMail on iOS. Some emails won’t even render at all :(
hn111··on Apple Photos app corrupts images
I remember years ago I lost some random videos on iCloud (synced via the Photos app). The filenames were there but they couldn't be opened anymore and seemed corrupt. Since then I never trusted iCloud anymore and switched to Syncthing (which back then also messed up some of my data if I recall correctly) and then Nextcloud.
hn111··on Yamanot.es: A music box of train station melodies from the JR Yamanote Line
Love it! Thanks for sharing
hn111··on Show HN: 1 Million Rows
Having the column widths jump around while scrolling and the absent page search doesn’t seem like ‘rock-solid reliability’ to me.

It seems this is just a minimum implementation of a ‘virtual list’.

hn111··on Hidden interface controls are affecting usability
on MacOS you can use Fn+Up and Fn+Down
hn111··on How to Think About Time in Programming
One thing I found out when programming a timeline lately was that year zero doesn’t exist. It just goes from -1 to 1. Which looks very weird if you want to display intervals of e.g. 500 years: -1001, -501, -1, 500, 1000, etc
hn111··on Claude 4
Didn’t they make an exception for open-source projects? https://opensource.org/blog/the-european-regulators-listened...
hn111··on Human
Out of curiosity-what brought you to this perspective on life? This view of the universe dreaming itself into existence, was it shaped more by philosophy, spirituality, a specific tradition like Buddhism, or just personal exploration?
hn111··on Show HN: I built a word game. My mom thinks it's great. What do you think?
Very nice! On iOS it does not seem to register fast consecutive taps correctly, if that’s fixed I would actually like to play this more often
