hjek··on OsmAPP – A Universal OpenStreetMap App
OrganicMaps is incredibly snappy compared to OsmAnd~.
hjek··on 41% of French pop in favour of limiting everyone to 4 flights for entire life
If you extend your love to all who live on earth then you'd take care not to contribute to the climate breakdown which ruins their lives.
hjek··on 41% of French pop in favour of limiting everyone to 4 flights for entire life
Yes, rush by train. Climate catastrophe makes families die.
hjek··on OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
They did some neat game mechanic tweaks, especially of the previously useless units: mechanics and thieves being able to revive and capture vehicles. Keeps the spirit of the old game but makes it more fun.
hjek··on Can Chrome Sync or Firefox Sync be trusted with sensitive data? (2018)

Except uBlock Origin Lite¹ which is permission-less.

hjek··on uBlock Origin Lite now available on Firefox
> why don't we block ads at the operating system level instead at the browser level?

sure, we do that, too: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts

hjek··on Inkscape 1.3
it's really good. very easy to import and work on multi-page docs, even with different page sizes. the developers did an amazing job there.
hjek··on Meta-provided FB chats led a woman to plead guilty to abortion-related charges
this is so sad. what a misogynist company. good friends don't let friends use facebook.
hjek··on Police sue rapper Afroman for using footage of home raid in his music videos
We can try to abolish police.

Oh, so ravynOS would kind of be for macOS what ReactOS is for Windows?
hjek··on Tor is fighting and beating Russian censorship

hjek··on Teams is killing my Mac every day
Yea, or just use a Firefox add-on[0] to change the user-agent to Edge for the Teams web app

(or even better, don't use Teams at all, obviously)

hjek··on Shotcut is a free, open-source, cross-platform video editor
> Even on a pretty powerful system, having a project timeline longer than an hour made the entire interface run at ~5fps for me when adjusting cuts.

Did you use proxy clips? It's not on by default[0].

hjek··on Privacy Badger is a browser extension that learns to block invisible trackers
> We further believe that local learning can offer benefits that outweigh the risk of additional fingerprinting,

Nice. I thought the local learning (which was kinda the main appeal of PB) was dead after reading that post. Glad that isn't the case.

hjek··on Shotcut is a free, open-source, cross-platform video editor
For me, Shotcut, Openshot, Flowblade, Olive and Pitivi have been crashing to often to be worth using. Openshot used to be less flaky when I used it a few years ago when it was in GTK but the Qt version has not been stable to me.

Kdenlive is amazing though, especially the timegraphs for applying effects, and the clip proxying which makes it amazingly smooth for large projects on old laptops. I don't think any of the other free video editors come anywhere close.

hjek··on Privacy Badger is a browser extension that learns to block invisible trackers
Wasn't the local learning disabled because it enabled fingerprinting?[0] Has that been fixed since you're recommending it?

hjek··on User friendly web games
> A hybrid of Mastermind and the Android pattern lock.

Neat idea, great implementation.

hjek··on Tails 5.0~beta1: Call for testing
> Another important thing is that heads uses only free software, while Tails continues using non-free software. Non-free software can not be audited and as such cannot guarantee you security or anonymity.

Latest version of heads is 4 years old so not sure how much security those developers can guarantee.

hjek··on Weightless cats – Do space cats land on their feet? (2011) [video]
This is animal abuse!
hjek··on Show HN: Web page that parses and explains the label on a bike tire
You could use a simple client-side JS OCR library, like GOCR.js[0]. It may only work on good photos of relatively new tires with clearly printed text, and that's not always what bicycle tires look like when you're looking to replace it, so not sure how useful it'd be.

I wish this was available for Sway. Could be great for old laptops.

This was also a showstopper for me. Now, however, in Debian Sid `redshift -m wayland` works fine (although Gnome also has its own

They can be configured in your compositor. For those used to using i3, Sway makes this easy by being mostly compatible.

hjek··on Why are German numbers backwards?
... which is especially embarrassing because they got rid of the problem in Swedish and Norwegian.
hjek··on Embedded malware in RC (NPM package)
Sounds really interesting. I'm kinda scared to use npm right now to be honest. What dangers may be hidden deep in the dependency trees? But is a review of every update then done, because rc used to be a legit package?
