hilariously··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
He's literally buying up american media to make them the arm of a genocidal state, so no, I am literally not.

He's literally the media arm of a genocidal state, what do you want?

As long as you are hoping he has a really, really, really positive view of Israel you're going to be happy!

It's not a clear divide between right and left, and NYT, the Atlantic, and NPR stans right wing voices constantly, have constantly used their editorialization to promote right wing ideals, and have gone out of their way to center right wing voices to give the appearance of being centrist to the right, which has had a direct impact in their perception as not really left wing by any of the left.

Now the center right is supporting concentration camps like "alligator alcatraz" so the overton window has shifted a lot in the last ten years.

Should we wonder if Goebbels was a fun guy irl? I don't get it.
hilariously··on Spending on AI Is Becoming Almost Impossible for Businesses to Budget
Yes, and that's normal, and the things I mentioned working engineers often have opinions about and some are even well informed, but traditionally there'd be a skew of opinions and different levels of strength of those held. You could inform yourself about those options, test them, and over time become well informed yourself.

That's not really possible with frontier models changing every 3-6 months, just like javascript frameworks there's not enough time to learn the ins and outs and they mostly expose the same interface, so unless you have rigorous evals you are working on vibes, and the amount of meetings I have had in the last 3 years of engineers confidently reporting on their vibes is SO TIRING.

I see a lot of businesses who just dump this all on their employees and then get mad at their employees effectively for not following the most recent LLM related talk on twitter.

Most employees can't tell you what database to use, what software programming framework to use, what document management framework to use, but they are expected to know which of the 25 models available to use for a task, budget appropriately, monitor efficacy, update models to the most relevant for a task, continue to manage architecture patterns??? for LLM agents, this list goes on.

This is getting stupid folks.

He literally hard coded his chatbot to spread lies about white genocide in south africa, that's off the top of my head.
hilariously··on A Staff Engineer's Guide to Inventing Work
I think the problem is one of management and prioritization and decision making - when multiple engineering teams disagree, how do you decide? Management consistently hires people that solve management problems, and mediating disagreements or picking product direction are core management functions that have been completely left behind as managers become purely MBA number people.
hilariously··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
I am glad you have an anecdote to counter everyone else's, but the thing we should be using is data, not anecdotes.

The reality is that most places you get on the order of 200 bucks per person PER MONTH, so that's not going far on steaks and shrimp.

Auditing and finding fraud is useful, but we also have to value it against the cost of auditing and fraud management in the first place, and the value is put up against honest people who have to a decent chunk of hours every month juggling government paperwork and websites to get the most meager of handouts.

hilariously··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
Yes, the "fiscal conservatives" show their hands over and over again when they simply choose policies that cost us more money, punish more people, lead to worse health outcomes, lead to worse societal outcomes, and just fail to produce the world we want to live in.
hilariously··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
They made a device that will create this problem by the millions for other people, they should have it inflicted on them every day.
hilariously··on VSCode's SSH Agent Is Bananas (2025)
Don't know why you are being downvoted, this is how a lot of clients do it - Jetbrains does the same thing as well.
hilariously··on Data-only attacks are easier than you think (2024)
I still remember me and my friends on club live finding that the games you could just submit the scores for and get free xbox stuff, and then doing some research online years later we found the entire thing was setup by employees to abuse themselves with plausible deniability.

Club live lost msft millions of dollars by itself.

hilariously··on Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker’s death
No, you would say it needs to be reformed and funded, we have an extremely legalistic society that allows endless delaying and does not fund its core services very well.
hilariously··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
You'll be SHOCKED at what we found out about Taylor Swift's TWO BRAINS - that's flying much closer to the sun.
hilariously··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
Sorry for being confusing, I was saying the latter - that these are reducing history to some game that can be understand with rules when it is nothing like that.
hilariously··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
Everything related to the right wing and fox news? We never had a big "swing left" - clinton was the democrats showing they can do economic conservatism as well. Modern acceptance of trans folks isn't a pendulum, most of the people espousing anti-trans views weren't pro trans 5 years ago.

Trying to abstract history into major shifts that are attributable to inanimate objects is just very ludic fallacy.

obligate male death happens, but usually in things like spiders after mating, so there's a few examples for you
hilariously··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
Taxes, compliance, regulatory bodies, logistics multiplied by X countries X products has an amazing way to bog you down. If you have money and problems money solves (eg you could hire more people to do something) you do not have a problem (except for people on the internet making arguments from personal inexperience)

hilariously··on Show HN: Copperhead – Cursor for circuit boards
The website is the marketing for the product, most people see that first, and they wont go further if your front door is festooned with goofball stuff.
hilariously··on Authorization terminology is a mess: Let's fix it
Someone who is incredibly pedantic and also specific about their word use, who doesn't have a problem with four different descriptions because they all elide to the same thing. ie someone who should have more sympathy AND empathy even if they can disambiguate the terms (for their audience.)
hilariously··on You Know Who Hates AI? Insurance Claims Adjusters
Feel free to blame MSFT all you want, I am just saying at some point if your boss keeps making dumb decisions it IS your bosses fault.

It's like a person voting for Trump the second time being confused at all his lies, at this point basic education would get you out of this.

hilariously··on You Know Who Hates AI? Insurance Claims Adjusters
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me ten billion times its still Microsoft's fault you bought the wrong thing.
hilariously··on You Know Who Hates AI? Insurance Claims Adjusters
You should. It's their fault for picking a bad vendor. It's their fault for not finding someone with taste to solve the problem. Fundamentally its their business, pretending you can blame someone else for your ultimate accountability is stupid.

Nobody is forcing you to take poison, and saying "Well Microsoft promised me it isn't poison!!!" at this point, decades into it selling poison, doesn't make much sense.

hilariously··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
As someone whose spent ~5k hours playing DF you are right, every person I have ever talked to about it has liked the idea and like 1/50 has gone on to play it for >10 hours.
