highlander··on Wherein my Kiss was Rejected
I liked a lot of these, but I am really uncomfortable with the idea of begging when you don't need to. You're lying to the people who donate to you and you could be depriving those who really needed that money. It would be better if you donated the proceeds to someone who really needs them.
highlander··on Why recruiters should be careful about spamming small developer communities
I don't like receiving unsolicited template emails from recruiters. However, you never know when you might need them, or their colleague, in future. So, although I don't respond to unsolicited template emails, I politely respond to individual LinkedIn requests, individual emails and phone calls. It doesn't take long to understand the opportunity, explain my position and ask them to only contact me in future if they have some specific kind of role I'm interested in. Usually they go away with no hard feelings and sometimes they've called me back in a couple of months with something genuinely relevant.

Now, just occasionally I've run into a total asshat. In fact, there is a guy who calls me in my current role who actually wants to act as an agent for my company. Every week he calls and asks to speak to <made_up_name>, expresses surprise when I say they don't work here and then asks who's in charge now. Every week I tell him never to call here again and every week he calls. If I could be bothered, I would report him to the phone company, authorities or whatever but frankly, life is too short and it's almost more of an amusement now.

highlander··on Ask HN: Your words of wisdom to live by?
1. The answer to "What do you do?" is "Whatever it takes". 2. What do you want to achieve? Figure out the gap between where you are now and achieving it. Figure out the first step, however small you can take that'll bring you closer. Take it. 3. Look after your body and your health. This may sound boring but this can make _such_ a massive difference to your life. Eat well and get fit. Do weights and cardio if you can. Your health, your confidence and your prospects in general will be greatly improved. 4. Drive hard towards your goals but live a balanced life. Enjoy your friends and your family and keep learning broadly throughout your life. 5. Old cliche but important - treat others as you would wish to be treated.
highlander··on Ask HN: What to ask to avoid corporate hell?
I don't know your definition of corporate hell but here are a few which might help: Q: What do you consider important when measuring performance of your engineers? Q: Can an engineer fix a bug without permission? Q: Do the dev teams have access to deploy their software to the production environment? Q: Can I download and install software to help me do my job? Q: What policies do you have in place if I want to use an open source library or framework in your system? Q: How often do your people work evenings and weekends? Q: Is there an on-call requirement? How does that work? Q: Can you describe the atmosphere? Is it fun? Is the department filled with laughter? Q: What are your views on hobby projects outside of work? What other cool things are people here involved in?
highlander··on It Doesn’t Count Unless I Know You’re Hitting on Me.
Well I'm a guy but if I wasn't married I'd be flattered.
highlander··on Ask HN: I versus We
If it seems odd, don't do it. If you're the only person, I think it's fine just to use 'I'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majestic_plural ;)

'In a frequently-repeated story, United States Navy Admiral Hyman G. Rickover told a subordinate who used the royal we: "Three groups are permitted that usage: pregnant women, royalty, and schizophrenics. Which one are you?"'

highlander··on On Refusing to Disclose Your Salary in a Job Interview
I will disclose my total compensation (but not my salary) to competent recruiters/headhunters from good companies. The reason I disclose total comp is that it enables a like-for-like comparison. Now, because these recruiters know my current package, they will only contact me about substantially larger opportunities. I think this is a win-win. Based on my experience so far, I don't think that disclosing my total comp necessarily 'anchors' the package for the new role.
highlander··on Reverse.jar
It's a balance. With overly simplistic languages, one ends up with too much code and repetition. However, when languages get more, well, 'advanced', it just gets harder to hire people who can work with it. Sure you need fewer people, but they're harder to find.
highlander··on Ask HN: I'm having a hard time with my startup, have a few questions
Instead of having everyone come to your own site, can you integrate your idea into existing bulletin boards or social networks as an app or even deeper? Seems like that would be the way to get a ton of users onto your solution quickly.
highlander··on London Stock Exchange smashes world record trade speed with Linux
It's fascinating that these latencies are an order of magnitude faster than most 'web services'. Can anyone provide more insight into what is specifically involved in executing a single trade? Are they just enqueueing a trade message in this latency or actually executing the trade? Are they including network latency in these numbers? Also, does anyone have any insights into the hardware and customizations?
