highace··on Panic Status Board is being discontinued
I tried to do this with the Chromecast - it isn't powerful enough and has a memory leak causing a crash after around a day.
highace··on Switching from macOS: The Basics
You can disable that, you know. It's one of the first things I do after an install.
highace··on Switching from macOS: The Basics
Windows? It's really not that bad.
highace··on What the Heck Is Happening at Apple?
Had a latitude 7440 before my Mac. The difference is still significant, sometimes I have to boot it back up and this makes me sad. The touchpad alone is worth upgrading for.
highace··on Ask HN: What do you regret in life?
Same. I crushed my L5 L6 disc and was in pain for 2 years. But fortunately with care it eventually recovered to 100% and I don't feel it at all anymore. However deadlifting is something I would never ever try again, and when I see people doing it I often tell them my story. It's one of the best lifts, but one of the most punishing. I wish I knew how dangerous it was.

That aside, most other lifts are fine. The only other one I would suggest people avoid is bench pressing with the smith rack (that's the rack where the bar is fixed and only moves on the vertical dimension). You'll get weightlifter's shoulder from doing that. Stick to dumbbells.

highace··on Ask HN: What do you regret in life?
There are two things in my life that I'm so grateful I became interested in. One is coding, the other is weightlifting. The benefits of each are so great I feel like they're the closest thing to having actual superpowers.

highace··on Show HN: Use Trello as a Helpdesk
Cool idea but why would I pay for this when I could pay for a proper helpdesk service instead?
highace··on Show HN: NewsAPI – A free API for live news headlines and images
Good spot, I'll fix this shortly :)
highace··on Show HN: NewsAPI – A free API for live news headlines and images
It's not something I had intended to do, but I could do. That would make it much more manageable to scale because the community could maintain the algorithms, which takes long enough for the 24 sources I already have that I'm hesitant to add more right now.

It's written in C# though, I can see that being a problem.

highace··on Show HN: NewsAPI – A free API for live news headlines and images
Thanks! I'm sure you're right - in the past developers will have simply consumed each source's API within their app, which is exactly what I did to begin with.

The algorithms will need maintaining, especially in the case of the scraped sites. I'll be relying on this service for my main project so it's something I'd need to keep track of anyway.

highace··on Show HN: NewsAPI – A free API for live news headlines and images
Great suggestion. I'll put this on the road map.
highace··on Show HN: NewsAPI – A free API for live news headlines and images
Hi HN! This is my side project. I needed to integrate the latest headlines and images from a range of popular news sources and blogs into my app, and found that there wasn't a single API available that brought all the metadata together in a simple and consistent way. So I made one. It sources data from individual APIs, RSS feeds, and plain old scraping, and outputs in JSON.

Here's some example responses:

highace··on Traffic Simulation
Welcome to the M25.
highace··on Show HN: Ponzi.es – Startup sticker ponzi scheme
If I want to just buy a load of different startup/saas/tech stickers, is there a place I can do that?
highace··on AdNauseam Browser Extension: Clicking Ads So You Don't Have To
I'd be totally cool with a paywall instead of slow and distracting ads.

Here's an idea - why don't a bunch of publishers (or a third party) get together and build a subscription service for a reasonable monthly fee that automatically gets me through their paywall when I visit their sites. In theory it would be open for any publisher to join, and they get to split my monthly fee based on pageviews.

highace··on Vanar.io – Realtime multiplayer browser game: Agar.io meets Asteroids
Too hard to control the ship using the keyboard, mouse movement like in agar would be loads better.
highace··on Becoming a contractor programmer in the UK
I would also recommend not using Crunch. They're OK if you stay on the beaten path, but if you start veering off it their juniors don't have a clue. It was a painful experience for me.
highace··on Discovering Two Screens Aren’t Better Than One (2014)
This is exactly what I've done - the Philips BDM4065UC is a 40" 4k monitor, so the overall pixel density is about the same as a 24" 1080p. It's like having 4 x 1080p monitors in a block. Also it runs at 60hz over a single displayport cable if your output supports it.
highace··on Microsoft's New Edge Web Browser – How to Create Edge Extensions?
Unlike Chrome, extensions require a browser restart after installation.

That is not good.

highace··on What the Flux?
I only just got my head around angular, and now flux + react have come along and wrecked the party.
highace··on iPhone 6 Plus bending in pockets
He doesn't have to use much force to get the kind of bend that would be noticeable when the phone is put down on a flat surface. I can easily see that being possible in a fitted pair of jeans.
highace··on iPhone 6 Plus bending in pockets
Pretty sure a pants pocket doesn't exert the kind of force required to break a plastic phone. Bend slightly - sure, but fortunately plastic returns to it's original shape once the tension has eased. Metal... not so much.
highace··on Apple – Live – September 2014 Special Event
A whole bunch of people don't have a job in the morning.
highace··on Show HN: My first app – The minimalist distance-based transit alarm
Windows phone development isn't all that bad. For starters there isn't as much competition as Android/iOS, so the chance to become the defacto app in your category is greater. And being a big fish in a small pond can work just as well as the opposite.
highace··on Show HN: A free invoice generator
This is really good. With the boring, generic, exact-match domain you've given it I was expecting something spammy. Is your aim to go after the SEO benefits or would you consider renaming it to something a bit more characteristic?
highace··on Show HN: Codeanywhere
Duh - when people say something is mobile/tablet compatible, obviously what they mean is compatible with the latest version of Android or iOS.

highace··on [dead]

highace··on Show HN: Real-time Reddit tracking and brand management
Great, but what happens if Reddit changes their API or SLA, or just plain shuts you out? Business = poof.
highace··on Show HN: Bvckup 2 – Simple Fast Backup for Windows
A simple product with a great looking UI and marketing site. You're gonna crush it.
