herdrick··on Using Altair for most of my visualization in Python
The article says it doesn't support 3d.
herdrick··on Why GNU grep is fast (2010)
I did the very same thing, and asked about it on SO too! https://stackoverflow.com/questions/54658932/grep-v-f-of-emp...
herdrick··on There Are No Dream Homes
> But Japan's real estate boom in the 90s was truly unbelievable

You mean the 80s. The 90s saw a real estate price collapse in Japan.

herdrick··on Q: Run SQL Directly on CSV Files
csvkit includes csvsql, which does this. I’ve used it and liked it. https://csvkit.readthedocs.io/en/1.0.3/tutorial/3_power_tool...
herdrick··on Paul Buchheit on Joining Google, How to Become a Great Engineer, and Happiness
What industry is he talking about?

Surely you can't be saying that public schools are a reason to stay in the Bay Area?

herdrick··on Ted Nelson on What Modern Programmers Can Learn from the Past [video]
"Keep up" is a really contemptuous thing to say. Could you edit to remove it please?

Cool pics are what killed the intellectual quality of Reddit. Let's not upvote this.

herdrick··on Zhou Youguang, creator of the Pinyin writing system, has died
Really great comment, except for the tone of the first sentence. Please be civil.
herdrick··on Does It Make Sense for Programmers to Move to the Bay Area?
Agriculture.
herdrick··on Ask HN: Have you ever thought of leaving programming for something else?
The scare quotes are pretty condescending. How about removing them?
herdrick··on Bay Area Politicians Strangling the Region's Key Industry
San Francisco real estate famously did not crash in in 2001 nor in 2009. Prices remained steady and started increasing rapidly again within a year or two.
herdrick··on Why you should never use MongoDB (2013)
dozzie, could you remove the "Uhm, no." from that? It only adds snark to an otherwise good comment.
herdrick··on Why I Would Raise Chickens
Cows can graze and put on weight on land that practically nothing other than deer can survive on. Think of the sagebrush semi-arid land of the American Great Basin (ex. northern Nevada, eastern Oregon). Chickens and goats can't.
herdrick··on Something Secret This Way Comes
Yes, I think something like this is the future of programming. It goes even further than what you're suggesting. The codebase will no longer need to be unambiguous, among other things.
herdrick··on Not-so-secret atomic tests: Why the photographic film industry knew (2013)
Brzezinski was right. Statesmanship is about tradeoffs and prioritiztion. This was a great bargain.
herdrick··on Ask HN: What is your job? Do you like it? What was your favorite job?
Ha! I used to work in field geophysics too. Same thing - got to know lots of interesting places.
herdrick··on The Tech Bust of 2015
And switching is a pain in the ass. Dropbox looks very strong.
herdrick··on The Tech Bust of 2015
"There is a massive disconnect in late-stage preferred stock, because if you’re using it to synthesize debt it doesn’t matter what the price is."

Actually, price is crucial with this weird 'debt' since you're betting on the cumulative probabilities of hitting your liquidity preference and liquidity cap numbers. (Really it's an integral over that range, but whatever.) Whereas in equity venture investing the power law distribution of returns dominates linear optimizations of price.

Thanks for reporting on this. I don't think many people knew about this insane liquidation straddle instrument. I sure didn't.

herdrick··on U.S. Air Force Requires Airmen to Praise F-35
> Boyd thought that even the F-16 was overweight and over-sized

... compared to what it could have been, and would have been, had he somehow completely gotten his way, sure. It was a disappointment to him, but it's still pretty good in energy–maneuverability theory terms.

And it's worth comparing the F-105 to the F-86 in dogfighting because dogfighting just keeps happening in wars, decades after it was predicted to cease.

herdrick··on Probabilistic Reasoning in Intelligent Systems (1988) [pdf]
I like my tech and math with history. Knowing where the ideas came from and what previous, wrong ideas they had to beat out is valuable in understanding them. (Plus it reminds you that maybe your new ideas could be the next thing.) But the full book (this is an excerpt) is more caught up in its time that I would have liked - a lot of it seems to be arguing against critics. You probably don't really need such an exhaustive treatment.

In contrast, Norvig's AIMA book has a chapter on the subject (bayes nets) which is confident and compact. Start there.

Still I like this book and have recommended it.

herdrick··on Mapping the U.S. By Property Value Instead of Land Area
This appears to be housing value, not property value. So this is leaving off commercial property, which is probably usually proportionate to housing value, and agriculture land, which isn't.
herdrick··on The 100-year-old scientist who pushed the FDA to ban artificial trans fat
> I'm 50 alone, scared, and close to being homeless.

Would you like to elaborate?

herdrick··on My Summer Car Game
In the first video he adjusted the valves with the valve cover off and the engine running ... did this madman simulate movement of the valves, cam, pistons, etc? To do it at the granularity needed to make that valve adjustment an organically arising need would be too computationally intensive I think. But how far did he go?

Doesn't matter - this guy is great.

herdrick··on Computer Science by Mail
Great idea! That was my first programming environment, in fact. Hooked me good!
herdrick··on The Impossible Physiology of the Free Diver
Sort of OT: is the movie, "The Big Blue" semi-realistic? Or is 'only' beautiful?
herdrick··on Why Racket? Why Lisp? (2014)
I think it compiled to MzScheme first.
