herbstein··on Danish Data Authority: Usage of Google Analytics Illegal in Some Cases

herbstein··on Bikes, not self driving cars, are the technological gateway to urban progress
> The point is that bicycling is not realistic outside of very, very dense cities

Bullshit. I grew up in a small village -- 300 people or so live there. It's a couple of kilometers from two other villages in the 2000-500 range. There's one school for the area shared between the villages. The daycare I went to was located in one of the other villages. I biked (alongside my parents) for 5 kilometers on non-separated roads to get to daycare at the age of 4. I biked first 2 kilometers to school every single day until 7th grade where I then had to bike 12 kilometers each way. It sounds tough if you don't bike. If you've done it your life whole it's just a mode of transport. Taking 30-40 minutes on the bike was faster than taking the bus too.

herbstein··on Crimes against transhumanity
> Not a scholar of the period, but I was under the impression that Greece's democratic system meant that only male land-owners could vote and that the leading philosophers of the day considered slavery the natural order of things, women marginally (if at all) better than slaves, and boys suitable for divine pleasure. It doesn't seem particularly democratic for them?

Except for the thing about boys and divine pleasure that just about sounds like the founding of the United States to me.

herbstein··on EU Digital ID wallet is coming
> Providing governments with a de facto mandatory electronic ID for every citizen is inherently providing the means to surveil, though.

But this suggestion ain't it. Most EU countries already have a de facto mandatory electronic ID for every resident.

The top Danish team is 102nd, and we barely lost our semifinal at the Euros in 2021. National league quality is not the same as talent pool quality. Especially not when cohesion is what truly matters in national teams. Just take a look at how France has performed in the last 4 Nations League games, even with their top-class players.

Helsinki is one of the Southern-most cities of Finland situated on the edge of a large body of water. Instead, take a look at this Not Just Bikes video covering biking in Finland during winter: https://youtu.be/Uhx-26GfCBU

The weather in Oulu during winter looks a lot like the weather in Sioux Falls, except there's a lot more precipitation (snow) in Oulu.

herbstein··on Ray-optics: a web app to simulate the reflection and refraction of light
5-or-so years ago I came across a raytracing simulator that looked a bit like this, but did a full spectrograph IC light simulation on top. I haven't been able to find it since, but it was a fascinating little toy to play around with.

herbstein··on Florida rejects 54 math books, claiming critical race theory appeared in some
>> Simply put, critical race theory states that U.S. social institutions (e.g., the criminal justice system, education system, labor market, housing market, and healthcare system) are laced with racism embedded in laws, regulations, rules, and procedures that lead to differential outcomes by race.

I'm reminded of this aphorism: "The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.".

Similarly, while cops might arrest/stop the people they see breaking the law, if they're disproportionately patrolling minority-majority neighborhoods there will be an unequal effect.

herbstein··on Why conservatives won't save freedom of speech
> The law allows workers to elect representatives (usually trade union representatives) for almost half of the supervisory board of directors. [..] It applies to public and private companies, so long as there are over 2,000 employees. For companies with 500–2,000 employees, one third of the supervisory board must be elected.

herbstein··on The new silent majority: People who don't tweet
It's generally quite hard for a trans person to be civil with a transphobe. Just as it's hard for e.g. black people to be civil with a racist. The bigot will, whether conscious or not, make the life of the minority absolutely terrible.

With LGBTQ it is therefore not just a difference of opinion on taxation, or a few percentage points difference in a tariff. For trans people it's about whether the other person even acknowledges that you can be trans.

herbstein··on Denmark Will Hold June Referendum on Joining EU’s Defense Pact
It's important to note that the EU defense pact carries out EU-coordinated missions unrelated to NATO-style defenses. These missions are arranged by a body in which Denmark doesn't have a voice at the moment, and every country can pick and choose which missions their troops go on. The military involvement in a given mission is not forced just by being part of the pact. On the other hand, not being part of the pact excludes Denmark from any missions they might have an interest in.

herbstein··on Hate to say it, but we need to increase oil and gas output immediately
Right now I live in an apartment built in the last 2 months with most of the apartments around me still in various stages of being built. This is in Denmark. During the 8-16 time window the road is filled with plumbers, electricians, and other construction workers. There are regularly big cranes and huge belt-driven machines rattling everything in my apartment. The only pickup truck I've seen was not used for construction work, but rather was driven by an inspector wearing a suit under the high-viz vest and hardhat.

Instead, the electricians, plumbers, etc. drive vans. They're smaller in footprint and easier to get things in and out of. Some have a covered and insulated shop inside (mostly the electricians) while others are purely for transportation. The materials and machinery that don't fit are too large be transported by a pickup too. Instead, lorries arrive with two or three pieces of machinery on a flatbed, or a single piece of machinery and a bunch of big pieces of material in a closed trailer. I can't tell where a pickup truck would ever be more useful in the construction landscape I'm seeing literally outside my window.

herbstein··on Ask HN: Is ADHD Real?
Your username is literally "DestroyADHD". That doesn't sound open-minded and questioning. But let's leave that aside.

A psychological disorder is a set of symptoms that negatively affects several areas in the life of the person experiencing them. That's about it. We group symptoms that often coincide and give the groups names. Getting a diagnosis is a trained professional confirming that you 1) have the symptoms and 2) confirming that it negatively affects your life. That's it. The cause of ADHD -- whether it's caused by the hustling modern world, a multitude, or any other cause -- is entirely irrelevant to a discussion about the "real"-ness of the disorder.

And of course, finding a root cause for ADHD would be incredibly useful for preventing it and helping people with it. But if the cause was found to be the modern overstimulated world that doesn't change anything about the disorder -- it's just as real as if humans have been dealing with it for 200,000 years.

herbstein··on High-order Virtual Machine (HVM): Massively parallel, optimal functional runtime

herbstein··on Spotify is removing Neil Young’s music after falling out over Joe Rogan
Yeah, FFMPEG famously had a troubled AAC encoder for a long time. It's a bit better since FFMPEG 5.0 was released recently. There is a huge difference between AAC as a codec and the quality of file FFMPEG can generate for it.
herbstein··on Spotify is removing Neil Young’s music after falling out over Joe Rogan
> Because it is not exactly opinion-free and society-building.

What a backwards way of characterising a style of vocal delivery. As I was reading your comment I was listening to the group 'clipping.' deliver the story of an uprising on an interstellar slave ship, the loneliness of the lone survivor drifting in and out of hypersleep for millenia, and the ship's computer realising the hate it had been taught for people with a skin color had no bearing in reality.

The GP talked about a specific person taking specific actions that they think was worth taking a stance against. Is your counter-argument to that highly pointed argument really to talk about everyone using a specific vocal technique?

Criticise a specific artist if they step over the line. Criticise someone like Immortal Technique for his 9/11 conspiracy bullshit and his rampant homophobia, but don't use someone like him to claim that somehow _all of rap_ should be discarded.

herbstein··on I think I know why you can't hire engineers right now
> $50 to $60k salaries are the norm

As a newly graduated CS student in Denmark I got a job earning $74k a year. I got warned by my union that my salary was on the low side and, come the first negotiation round of the year, I should ask for a larger raise than simply a yearly adjustment. And based on my union's numbers I don't think almost any developer is working for $60k or under in this country.

herbstein··on Facebook said my article was false – now the fact-checkers admit they were wrong
> If it is false is it really right to flag the post. I mean yes it is false but as Americans we are supposed to have free speech when we don't.

Good thing nothing that happens on Facebook ever spills over into other countries.

On a non-sarcastic note, I find it interesting that you didn't engage at all with the comment about Facebook and genocides. It's easy to sit in an ivory tower and play philosopher on topics of corporate censorship like this. What's less interesting, but far more useful, is evaluating whether Facebook should do more to moderate when their platform is actively used to orchestrate genocides in several separate places on earth.
