hengistbury··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Petro-states are destroying their trust as they try desperately to cling on to the power fossil fuels have given them. Thankfully this makes renewables even more attractive than just their lower cost.
hengistbury··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
> Supermarkets in the UK point cameras at your face at self-checkout.

Though this is true, many supermarkets use this as a scare tactic instead of surveillance. I know a few people who work in supermarkets and when when incidents happen they can't use footage from the self-checkouts because they're not recording.

I do wonder if the cameras exist in the machines so one day they can be recording and performing face recognition however.

> The other three were pretty much traits of every major traditional religion at its founding.

I think this suggests that all major religions are cults, rather than that Mormonism isn't. The lines are certainly very blurry.

hengistbury··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
When cycling on shared use infrastructure I generally find pedestrians understand the meaning of a bell as a warning. Certainly some do become startled and move unpredictably, but if you travel at a low enough speed and bell with enough distance that this isn't an issue.

I regularly cycle on a very narrow shared use pavement which is directly beside a 40mph road. There is space to pass pedestrians, but I would consider it dangerous to try and pass without ensuring they are aware of my presence, even when passing at a walking pace.

A chime of the bell is more of a polite "I'm here" instead of a "Get out of my way!"

hengistbury··on Do not mistake a resilient global economy for populist success
The answer is the ultra-wealthy. Those on welfare are getting increasingly poor, while the ultra-wealthy are getting increasingly wealthy. It's clear where the money is going, and it's not to poor people.

The US administration is threatening to invade the territory of an EU member state, so I'm not sure the use of 'enemy' is too hyperbolic.

Can you trust the model when the people releasing it are using it in this way? Can you trust that they won't be training models to behave in the way that they are prompting the existing models to behave?
hengistbury··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
I suspect many people in this thread don't believe this is genuinely about preventing OpenAI from becoming a for-profit corporation.
hengistbury··on Turn any bicycle electric
For most bikes this ratcheting mechanism is in the back wheel, so when going down a hill the pedals, the chain ring, and the chain are all staying in the same position. In the demo the chain ring and chain are moving under the motors power, but the pedals are remaining still.
hengistbury··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
People in the US have the right to petition the Government, regardless of their eligibility to vote.
hengistbury··on Why Gov.uk's Exit this Page component doesn't use the Escape key
I can't claim any expertise here either...

But I can imagine that people accessing information about domestic abuse might not necessarily have regular access to internet connected devices, they might not know the best ways to act under stress. Maybe they won't notice the big red button, but maybe there is some chance that they will notice it, and therefore some chance it will be beneficial to them in that moment.

hengistbury··on Why Gov.uk's Exit this Page component doesn't use the Escape key
I see these points as reasons why it might not be a good idea, but they don't explain why it is a bad idea.

Other methods for leaving the site still work. Even if the button isn't the best way to leave the site, if it helps in more cases than it hurts then it's a net benefit.

These buttons are essentially panic buttons, and when a person is panicking the big red exit button might end up being the only exit they can find.

Governments still have budgets. At the end of the day it's just money in, money out, except private healthcare has someone siphoning money in the middle.
hengistbury··on Bob_cassette_rewinder
I feel like DRM is a stretch, the chip in the cartridge is used to track how many washes are left so it knows if it is empty.

The dishwasher can be used with regular tablets or powder. I use mine with powder and a small amount of citric acid, and have great results.

hengistbury··on Bob_cassette_rewinder
This dishwasher is much smaller, so would require smaller tablets to work work efficiently. Certainly possible, and Daan Tech sell small tablets for this use.

One benefit of measured detergent is that the wash cycle can dispense the correct amount for different parts of the cycle, for example the pre-wash can dispense a small amount and the main cycle can dispense a larger amount. The rinse at the end can dispense rinse aid.

This system offers more control to the machine about when fluids are used, though it would be much better to include refillable tanks instead of the cassette system.

I own a Bob and use powder since mine has stopped pumping detergent...

hengistbury··on Bob_cassette_rewinder
Daan Tech broke their firmware update mechanism for lots of dishwashers in the field by losing their keys, more than once too. I own one such dishwasher and can't update the firmware without replacing the main board. They could certainly prevent cartridge resetting in newer dishwashers.

hengistbury··on We’re adding barcodes to our regular stamps
If you buy stamps from the Royal Mail directly online, perhaps they would keep a register of who bought which stamps.

If you buy stamps from a shop, perhaps a register is kept of which stamps were given to which shops.

I don't know how likely any of this is, but it can definitely make stamp purchases more traceable than without the barcodes.
