henearkr··on New Referendum Would Flip Brexit Result 10 Years On, Poll Finds
That's a dangerous situation for EU:

- UK would rejoin EU,

- and then, later on, Reform would reach power and undermine EU just like Orban did.

So maybe it would be better to refuse UK its reentry into EU...

henearkr··on Tree Calculus
That makes me think of the Inca's quipus.
henearkr··on Proton Meet isn't what they told you it was
Would you mind showing me some evidence that software update systems are able to push to you e.g. a different Android update based on your device ID or specific IP? (not just country geolocation) (PS: your link is about deploying malware through other routes, not by normal software updates)

Because all the other means I can think of are just basic malwarfare.

As you need to rely on a vendor/distributor to get updates, then of course they are able to push you malware, there is absolutely no going around this first ring of trust.

Conclusion : there is no point in accusing Proton of anything... there are just being software providers (FOSS by the way!!!).

henearkr··on Proton Meet isn't what they told you it was
There is NO such mechanism (discriminated updates by user), of my knowledge, in:

- Linux (apt, pacman, rpm...),

- Android

And I would add Windows and iOS/MacOS but I'm not at all an expert so I leave others to confirm that their "app stores" don't do such exotic prowesses.

You can artificially insert a malicious script in a package that would scan your system, deduce your identity, and install something based on that, but in this case that means that it is just a malware in the first place. And that would mean that the app to be installed contains a "mutable" component of data that is not defined by the contents of the package but rather written upon post-install actions, so that is also dubious to include that for formally in the "app from that package" definition. In any case, such behavior would get your package banned from any app store or Linux distribution.

One by one:

- A/B testing is agnostic of who the user is, it is randomized. If it was not, that would be a bad practice and would legitimately ruin the reputation of the company doing that,

- auto-updates is just the setting allowing the most recently published update to be installed. "Published" means it is for everyone. If that is to be understood in any other meaning, that would also be bad practice,

- and I don't see what you mean by server-side re-routing.

To be honest, maybe I just live with different platforms and apps than you I don't know. I use Android, and Linux on my Laptop, but I would also expect Windows to not discriminate by user when pushing updates.

Is there any evidence that the mechanism to do that is in place?

I think that would be widely decried especially on HN if that is one day implemented.

henearkr··on Cloudflare flags archive.today as "C&C/Botnet"; no longer resolves via 1.1.1.2
Ah! You may well be right. Thanks.

That's bad then, to depend on that for paywall bypass...

I hope very much that the situation evolves into a more satisfactory one.

henearkr··on Cloudflare flags archive.today as "C&C/Botnet"; no longer resolves via 1.1.1.2
I doubt it.

You may have mixed it up with archive.org.

henearkr··on Httpz – Zero-Allocation HTTP/1.1 Parser for OxCaml
Oh I got the joke! (I'm pretty sure it was intended)

Yes a parser is a fun to read ;)

henearkr··on European Commission issues call for evidence on open source
Very weird to see written "EU open-source sector", because any medium or large open-source project is international and includes many EU contributors.

I don't think of GNU as an "US" open-source project, nor of Linux as a "Finnish" open-source project. That's just laughable.

henearkr··on Show HN: Lean4 proof that SSOT requires definition-time hooks and introspection
Any example(s) of language that includes all the necessary features?
henearkr··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
(I managed to improve it.)

Running ads unskippably: unspeakably sad earning.

henearkr··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
I was coding a lot many years ago with a Nokia N900.

The loss of the physical keyboard ruined everything for me. I really need the sense of touch.

henearkr··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
You can store CO2 and sell it to construction companies (to cure ferrock), to energy storage companies (who like to put the CO2 in huge bubbles nowadays, go figure), or to agricultural corporations (who enrich greenhouses air in CO2 to accelerate growth).
henearkr··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
Do you know ferrock?

It is a kind of cement that uses CO2 to cure.

henearkr··on Why people are mad at Framework
Rather than "people", it would be more correct to say "some people" are mad at FW.

I'm pro-LGBT+ ("ally"), pro-DEI, ecologist, anything left you name it I'd say, and I'm not mad at FW.

I did not know about this story, neither about Omarchy or DHH, neither even about Hyprland (I don't use Wayland).

And I think that none of those stuff really matter a lot...

henearkr··on Over 40% of deceased drivers in vehicle crashes test positive for THC: Study
I can't make sense of it mathematically. A statistical distribution fitting these characteristics does not exist.

If non-weeders have an average seat belt wearing, and if weeders also have an average seat belt wearing, then the proportion of weeders inside of the seat belt non-wearing class is just equal to the proportion of weeders inside the whole population.

henearkr··on Roomba maker goes bankrupt, Chinese owner emerges
> The cat angrily pooped just outside her litter box

This cracked me up, as it implies the cat had thoroughly planned her skirmish :)

henearkr··on Nokia N900 Necromancy
I don't see any keyboard or stylus in that Jolla.

For me that is not even in the same league than the N900.

henearkr··on Valve: HDMI Forum Continues to Block HDMI 2.1 for Linux
What is preventing the emergence of an open source project providing the HDMI 2.1 bytecode ready to be downloaded into a FPGA, giving any Linux user the possibility to very easily DIY an adapter? Or even sell and ship the hardware without any loaded bytecode, and then users load it beforehand?
henearkr··on I wasted years of my life in crypto
No, just publish the hash of the full log. No blockchain required at all. Anybody can check they are seeing the same log as others by checking the log hash.
henearkr··on I wasted years of my life in crypto
No, because each participant can check its contribution in the log.

Everybody gets a copy of a verifiable hash etc when voting, allowing voters to mathematically check their vote.

The kind of knowledge allowing to design such clever algorithms is the real meaning of the word "crypto" (cryptography).

henearkr··on Denx (a.k.a. U-Boot) Retires
Ha! lol ^^ Ok, I see!
henearkr··on Denx (a.k.a. U-Boot) Retires
I don't. One typo away means it stays different.
henearkr··on Denx (a.k.a. U-Boot) Retires
I think you meant Laplace (Laplacian operator).
henearkr··on Denx (a.k.a. U-Boot) Retires
To scientific-oriented minds it only refers to the mathematical operator.

I personally did not know about, and don't care about, the "horrifying" thing you see in nabla. And I will keep being like that.

If we were to start tracking all the things that are "a typo away from a bad thing", not a lot of words would be left.

henearkr··on End of Japanese community
In the replying posts, there is mention of a discovered bug that could have resulted in most of the reported problems.

It is normal to want to discuss in order to check if that was the bug, in which case fixing the bug would have solved the issues.

henearkr··on PSF has withdrawn $1.5M proposal to US Government grant program
It includes "DEI, that violates nondiscrimination laws" presented as an accepted fact. So that includes a statement that is opinionated and political, not based on facts or rationality, and roughly half the US population at least does not agree with it.

So, besides how dishonest your comment may be, at least all the readers (who somehow missed that unmissable point, but I digress) get the idea.

Edit: the presence of the comma forbids any interpretation as "{follows DEI} AND {violates nondiscrimination laws}", and instead it reads as "{follows DEI} AND {by the way you already know/agree that DEI violates nondiscrimination laws}". Which any project leader that doesn't believe that DEI violates nondiscrimination laws will reject instantaneously.

But I have the sense that you are not discussing in good faith anyway, so...

henearkr··on PSF has withdrawn $1.5M proposal to US Government grant program
Nope, you cherry-picked around the part where they say no to DEI.
