headwayoldest··on 36TB FreeNAS Home Server Build
You can buy a FreeNAS box built by the same company that runs the project on Amazon. A bit pricey, but it's been perfect for me for over a year.
headwayoldest··on Fai0verflow: Linux on the PS4 [video]
It's more impressive as a demonstration of owning the platform than getting Linux to run on something odd/unusual. The PS4 was only recently jailbroken.
headwayoldest··on Ask HN: 11 days off for Christmas vacation – What would you learn?
Or at the very least learn something new that is not directly related to work.
headwayoldest··on dd – Destroyer of Disks (2008)
The aptly named "Progress" also works on dd.

headwayoldest··on Macbook charger teardown: surprising complexity inside Apple's power adapter
I've owned Macbooks consistently for about 6 years now, I always use that little loop technique when winding the cord. I've never had a charger fray or fail on me.
headwayoldest··on Don't copy paste from a website to a terminal
Little Snitch serves this purpose to some extent on OS X. If the malicious hidden script invoked a remote server I'd get a popup asking if I would like to allow it.
headwayoldest··on Introducing 1Password for Teams
I use secure notes for that, personally.
headwayoldest··on New Star Trek Series Premieres January 2017
>The ship started out with 38 torpedoes and no way to replace them (stated explicitly in dialogue!) and by the end of the show they had used something like 85 of them.

I get where you're coming from, and they definitely would have been better served to a) not say that, or b) resolve it at some later time. That said, part of what made Voyager interesting (to me) was that they had basically taken house cats and thrown them into the wild. In Federation space there was never a need or desire to make new photon torpedoes on the fly, but in the Delta quadrant for seven years they probably figure something out.

headwayoldest··on iFixit App Pulled from Apple’s Store
> I feel like this move is hiding behind "technology wants to be free and open" while actually making a grab for clicks and views.

I agree completely. The post and publicity that accompany it are definitely more of the same.

headwayoldest··on OS X El Capitan GM Candidate available
If memory serves GMs are normally a one and done thing. It may be buggy and inadvisable (wait for 10.x.1), but the GM normally ships more or less unchanged.
headwayoldest··on Writing a Game Boy Advance Game
I would argue that Super Mario RPG is one of the best JRPGs (and games in general) ever made.
headwayoldest··on Oh My Zsh
You're really only going after the config files, though. .zpreztorc, and if you don't like some of Sorin's aliases (rm, ls, etc) you can take them out of the utility plugin. I've spent maybe an hour "working" on my fork in the last year.
headwayoldest··on Oh My Zsh
It's so bizarre to me that people would look at the base install of essentially dotfiles as canonical and unalterable. Fork Prezto and maintain your own version.
headwayoldest··on Fish shell
More a question of corporate best practices than minding, but I appreciate the link!
headwayoldest··on Fish shell
The biggest thing that swayed me to stick with (and optimize/customize) Prezto was the fact that most of the systems I work with have zsh, or a relatively modern version of it available in repos. Can't say the same for fish.
headwayoldest··on Microsoft Launches Visual Studio Code, a Free Cross-Platform Code Editor
Looks like it's just free as in beer for now. Who knows what will happen a few months/years from now when it doesn't have a huge userbase and Microsoft isn't interested in continuing to support it alone.
headwayoldest··on OpenSSH 6.8 released
I agree, it's an exciting feature with a lot of promise. It does have some potential for abuse, and I think defaulting to off is the proper choice. Even when it's no longer experimental, this is something I imagine you'd want to enable on a per server basis.
headwayoldest··on Vega, Sri Lanka's All-Electric Supercar
>Neat concept car, looks nice but not exactly revolutionary.

Exactly. If they really wanted to wow the world they would have figured out how to make a more accessible electric vehicle that has a range long enough for the average person to consider buying.

headwayoldest··on Why DNS in OS X 10.10 is broken, and what you can do to fix it
The counter argument to this is that the RFC is exceedingly new, and directly from Apple. Microsoft has been using .local in example (and recommending them for production) AD builds for a decade. I see what Apple is going for, and I don't mind the idea, but the practical results are frustrating and pointless.
headwayoldest··on Mosh – a robust, responsive replacement for SSH
Yeah, what's the point of creating a great, mobile focused alternative (or enhancement, however you'd like to describe it) to SSH if no one will implement it on iOS because it's GPLv3?
headwayoldest··on The Next Chapter – moot retires from 4chan
I think the implied threat to personal safety is more jarring than obnoxious phone calls, but this is so far off topic it belongs elsewhere.

The kinds of harassment we've seen come out of one man's personal crusade against an ex-girlfriend are disgusting, and it's incumbent upon all of us to discourage it.

headwayoldest··on The Next Chapter – moot retires from 4chan
>No, really, gamergate supporters like Milo Yiannopoulos have also been doxxed

I don't think someone searching his twitter feed for a phone number he himself posted for self promotion falls under the same category as taking selfies outside someone's place of work.

>The drunk driving analogy is stupid because the benefits that cars provide to society outweigh the negatives of drunk drivers, but there is no good reason for an anonymous tip to warrant armed soldiers breaking into your house in the night, usually making no indication that they are policemen and not just thugs and robbers, and shooting you dead if you so much as move the wrong way in your confusion. It's a profoundly dangerous and easy to abuse system, and it needs to change.

You're right, the system does need to change. And I would even agree that is linked to the issues of online harassment. However, that is not the cause of online harassment, nor would improvements to police reaction policies put a stop to doxing.

headwayoldest··on The Next Chapter – moot retires from 4chan
>Members of the anti-GG and social justice crowds have carried out similarly stupid and counterproductive acts of aggression and bullying.

It's not directly relevant to the topic, but if you really believe this you should better educate yourself with regard to what has been done in the name of gamergate.

>IMHO you should be placing more of the blame on our fucked up militarized police system that lets bored teenagers send an armored car full of soldiers, armed to the teeth and ready to kill to anyone's house with a single phone call. If it takes a few SWATings for the public to realize that this is completely unacceptable, so be it.

SWATing has been an ongoing thing for quite a while, with a few cases making their way into mainstream news. Perpetrators (when caught) are prosecuted quite heavily. Waving off SWATing as not the fault of places which allow and encourage harassment in the form of doxing just because the military industrial complex exists seems like blaming auto manufacturers for drunk drivers.

headwayoldest··on The Next Chapter – moot retires from 4chan
Ever heard the phrase "my right to extend my arm stops at your nose"? Online harassment and freedom of speech are similarly related.

It may be a slippery slope, but it's an important one to navigate. Throwing your hands up and saying "well all these horrible manchildren would just organize somewhere else to harass people, so I might as well let them do it here!" isn't bravery, it's opportunism.

As far as 8chan outlasting 4chan? Unlikely unless the owner realizes he's sitting on a ticking time bomb of federal criminal cases.

headwayoldest··on CotEditor – Text Editor for OS X
Atom is strange to me, it seems like a less familiar Sublime Text with no real distinguishing features.
headwayoldest··on About My Yosemite Review
I used and loved it for years, but when MobileMe died and Yojimbo languished I moved on to Evernote, for better or worse.
headwayoldest··on About My Yosemite Review
The most surprising thing to me about this post is that there's someone out there still using Yojimbo.
headwayoldest··on [dead]
As far as science fiction villains go space faring lizards descended from a failed science experiment rank pretty high.
headwayoldest··on Overcast – A powerful yet simple iPhone podcast player
Really liking the smart speed and voice boost features. Feels like a huge improvement on my favorite podcast (Gear Geeks Live) which typically has audio quality issues.

Don't like getting hit up for an email address right off the bat, but Marco has a pretty solid track record.

headwayoldest··on Penny Arcade – Surface Pro 3 update
Gabe is just the character that initially represented Mike Krahulik, the artist of PA and the person writing those posts.
