hbs18··on Coffee Stats – Maximize Caffeine Intake and Get to Bed at Night
Would gradually decreasing the amount of caffeine consumed have made quitting the habit easier?
hbs18··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
The 16 Pros are slightly taller
hbs18··on I Quit Spotify
I don't think calling them a pleb is right, it's just that not everyone cares as much about music. I could probably come up with 5 different things I'm sure you don't think as deep about and call you a "plebeian". This is why you'll get the flak, not because you're presenting some novel idea. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is a well known album that you can't just listen to in parts.
hbs18··on Rodney Brooks on limitations of generative AI
You can't reliably teach an LLM maths the same way you can't take a locomotive offroading.
hbs18··on BlackHole: macOS Audio Loopback Driver
> It's probably just me, but the video in these video calls is mostly a waste of bandwidth, I am never paying attention to the bobbing heads in the screen

"People and culture" departments would argue that it creates a sense of belonging and cohesion to the team.

hbs18··on Any Technology Indistinguishable from Magic Is Hiding Something
Because they have more capable LLMs and the hardware needed to run them.

hbs18··on U.S. army drops requirement for high school diploma (2022)
The mobile version of wikipedia looks nicer on a desktop/laptop than the regular version.
hbs18··on Disney's earliest Mickey Mouse enters public domain as US copyright expires
They might have a harder time fighting the use of Steamboat Willy considering that a trademark has less restrictions on its use than a copyrighted work.
hbs18··on Nobody knows what's happening online anymore
> Today, I know what Spotify is trying to push, but I have no idea if that is what is actually popular. Even if I were to install TikTok I probably wouldn't see the same things they are. I have no idea if the garbage on the front page of reddit is really reflective of how younger people think, or if it just an engagement algorithm feedback loop gone wrong where everyone reasonable has long since checked out.

In the case of youtube, you can just open the front page in an incognito tab. There's also the trending category which isn't catered to you specifically but to what's popular in your country/area around you.

hbs18··on How does Shazam work? (2022)
On iPhones you can add a Shazam-powered music recognition quick toggle which acts just as you described.
hbs18··on Show HN: I made a 30-day social anxiety challenge
A weird thing that worked for me was, after seeing The King's Speech, I experimented with putting chewing gum under my tongue and speaking. To my surprise, could notice a pretty significant improvement.
hbs18··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Anegdotal evidence, but all my USB-C phones (three of them) so far have had the connector fail after 2-3 years of use, and it's not due to lint and dust in the port. Cable doesn't click into the port and falls out on its own.
hbs18··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
It's more likely they use Apple Maps
hbs18··on Oregon decriminalized hard drugs – early results aren’t encouraging
"Why should I get a fine for speeding when I was doing 150mph on an empty highway at night? I wasn't endangering anybody, and I have lots of experience driving cars fast!"
hbs18··on Discovering that a Bluetooth car battery monitor is siphoning location data
You are confusing CyanogenMod (the custom ROM for which you supply your own Gapps) and Cyanogen OS (the commercial version of CyanogenMod) that was used by the OnePlus One and OnePlus Two.
hbs18··on Text rendering hates you (2019)
Just what Unicode needs, Mayan orthography.
hbs18··on WFH – Watched from Home: Office 365 and workplace surveillance creep (2022)
My bad, I misunderstood the above comment.
hbs18··on Social media for AI bots: “No humans allowed”
The comments made by the experiement are no better or worse than standard comments you'd find on those threads anyway. That old people collecting things comment was actually pretty good.
hbs18··on WFH – Watched from Home: Office 365 and workplace surveillance creep (2022)
> Tax, banking and health related information are some of the things that I can think of that would be shared on a need to know basis with people at work and have no business to be seen by people outside of the intended audience.

I am against workplace surveillance, but why would people receive this information to their work email address?

hbs18··on Examples using Photoshop’s new “Generative Fill” feature
the prompt that filled in rest of the image with the jacket-wearing guy was two words
hbs18··on Asus Ally Emulates PS3, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360 with Ease

Oh no! The horror!

hbs18··on Pixel phones are sold with bootloader unlocking disabled
> then having the phone logged in for at least 7 days

I unlocked the bootloader with the unlock tool less than 12 hours after purchasing my Xiaomi Mi 8. How come everybody has to wait that long?

hbs18··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
You won't get the cops called on you for sideloading apps onto iPhones. You aren't "not allowed to".
hbs18··on The case for banning children from social media
> Self-reported rates of depression and anxiety disorders have more than doubled

I wouldn't take this as seriously as you do. Self reporting this doesn't mean a whole lot, especially in a culture (among teens) where it's common, and a source of clout even, to assign labels like "trauma" "depression" and "disorder" to things that are not that.

hbs18··on The case for banning children from social media
> So instead of their social feed being controlled by a company it can be monitored and controlled by parents.

Huge win for helicopter parents

hbs18··on Tell HN: Don't Be Afraid of Yandex
Yandex's search by image functionality is also much better than Google's is. I feel like Google substantially neutered that as well.
