hb-robo··on I Wrote a WebAssembly VM in C
That's quite interesting. This is way outside of my wheelhouse - has this kind of approach been tried in other security contexts before? What would you even call that, virtualization?
hb-robo··on Interview with Jeff Atwood, Co-Founder of Stack Overflow
I don't really get Mass in general. On paper it seems like it should be quite a bit nicer than it is in reality. I live in the Hudson Valley and feel like it would be a downgrade in a few ways. And for being a deep blue state they are pretty far behind Cali/NY/Wash/Ill on things like food safety and health guidelines.
hb-robo··on We need to protect the protocol that runs Bluesky
It's politicized by default when it stands in opposition to the most blatantly ideologically slanted social media site in existence this side of Gab and Truth Social.
hb-robo··on We need to protect the protocol that runs Bluesky
Considering everyone NOT in a specific ideological umbrella has been fleeing X en masse, yeah it's obviously sensible that alternative ideologies would be more present by default.

Layman question here since this isn't my field: how do you achieve success on closed-system tasks without supervision? Surely at some point along the way, the system must understand whether their answers and reasoning are correct.
hb-robo··on Metacognitive laziness: Effects of generative AI on learning motivation
It's funny, the calculators were incredibly politicized when I was growing up (TI84 generation, so kids were getting caught programming functions to solve exam questions) but GPS was just taken as a given.
hb-robo··on Metacognitive laziness: Effects of generative AI on learning motivation
Same here. I never really consciously saw it as "defiance" against cognitive decline or anything. More to the point, the answers are much better on average
hb-robo··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Kids are born into a world where the last generation is already essentially locked into lifetime servitude, the world is burning, and the "adults in the room" are a circus. How could they not indulge in alternatives? What is there to look forward to, identify with, or love about this place?

Culture thrives when the people are able to live meaningful lives.

They can't afford not to accept it, honestly. They need to work so they don't die.

"A 2023 survey conducted by Payroll.org highlighted that 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck" "71.93% of Americans Living Paycheck to Paycheck Have $2,000 or Less in Savings" https://www.forbes.com/advisor/banking/living-paycheck-to-pa...

Incredible stuff, really.
hb-robo··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
> This is the overwhelmingly main reason why Tiktok is getting banned.

Because people are writing Orwell fanfiction?

Oh, wasn't meant at any dig in terms of quality, I don't believe in that kind of characterization. Besides, ostensibly, Chinese developers have been much more successful in this space and seem to deliver better products. I just wouldn't know myself as I stay off of shortform video platforms.
hb-robo··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
The kids flocking to another Chinese app just to avoid using Reels, Shorts, or whatever abomination is on X continues to be so funny to me. Looks like a long game of whack a mole starting.
hb-robo··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
We're up +1.5C already and it's a polynomial growth. This current figure was also on the "upper end" of projections from 25 years ago.
hb-robo··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
I'm all for this, lol.
hb-robo··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
There is an unlimited amount of potential financial gain from American politics, both in lobbying and campaign financing. It is also widely true that the candidate with the most money spent in a campaign is heavily favored to win the election, with the exception of the presidency which is more contested. Now consider that in the 2020s the richest people now have more money than God.

The short of it is that you can get anyone you want in office, to do anything you want even if it directly opposes their constituency, as long as you spend enough money on them to get them in office, buy their vote, and keep their PR afloat.

Gilens and Page (2014) found that "average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence" on American government policy: https://www.scienceopen.com/document?vid=e4797592-9d73-4f2b-...

Worth noting that this paper saw pushback for many years after the fact but measurably, its conclusion has been true since its release.

I get that we're on a tech forum but the vast, vast majority of people in this country don't have the financial ability to just move wherever they want. I'm not saying that means that Floridians shouldn't worry about this, but this bootstraps narrative is ridiculous. Everyone here makes substantially more money than the average Joe.
hb-robo··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
More like can't care about anymore. Median household income is 63k in OK and housing costs are through the stratosphere, it's no wonder people will pick any home over none.
hb-robo··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
I'm kind of skeptical the US grid can even handle this industry growth if it becomes the only realistic place these models are ran. A lot of the infrastructure is pretty wobbly. And forget the tax benefits and cheap land from Texas, their private grid is liable to bust at any time.
hb-robo··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
These models are stochastic though, so saving conversations with elaborate context so they're actually useful in the domain you need them to be useful in is a fundamental feature. The alternative to that is saving a document to copy-paste in as a "startup prompt" of things it needs to know contextually, which is kind of silly.
hb-robo··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
That corporate context is a good candidate, yes, but I think it's simpler than that. Assuming whatever Apple and Google cook up these next few years is essentially identical from a user standpoint, you can assume that Google's will be selling off every microscopic datum they collect from you, and know for a verifiable fact that Apple's will not (and cannot).
hb-robo··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
It still really isn't that close to Google Maps, with public transit in particular Apple Maps is pretty much useless. GM is typically more complete with paths and building data outside of North America too.
hb-robo··on I automated my job application process
I am not a hiring manager but something about these mini-paragraphs puts me off. It's like those tabloid sites where every sentence has its own line.
hb-robo··on I automated my job application process
From what I can tell? Traveling to those meetups, which is a serious expense.
hb-robo··on I automated my job application process
I tried this during peak Silicon Valley days. I remember two things:

1. I got laughed at for wearing a suit by t-shirt devs

2. Around 40% of the places did not allow people to walk in the door at all.

I would be pleased with this kind of "analog" solution to this noise though, even as someone who missed the previous in-person paradigm entirely.

Right, and the last thing you want is false negatives here.
