hayksaakian··on Show HN: Side project passed $2.5k/mo revenue after 2 years (Phoenix and Vue)
feedback from a potential customer (we use pandadoc.com right now, previously proposify.biz):

the main unanswered question I have: "is this for me?". (My company is a marketing agency).

normally I'd expect to see examples of your other clients, testimonials from customers, or case studies.

I saw 0 of this (whether it doesn't exist or I missed it is a separate problem).

Even if your customers are not notable brands, just knowing that someone else uses this and it works for them gives me more confidence as a potential customer.

Note how Stripe for example uses customer logos and real customer examples throughout their sales page. https://stripe.com/

If you're concerned about this, just try asking your existing customers. It sounds like they're involved with sales, so they probably understand the value of a testimonial. You could start the conversation by asking "How do use quotes, reviews, or testimonials in your sales process?".

side note: I like the demo video on the home page. I'm on a laptop screen and wanted to view it full screen so i double clicked the video, but this did nothing.

2nd side note: if you establish yourself within one type of customer, word will spread more quickly about your product, assuming it's actually a better solution.

Based on the example video, it looks like your product is used by remodeling companies

What stands out to me:

- thought out support for mobile devices

- integration with online payments

Like the other commenters said, ahrefs, moz and other competitors provide similar information too.

It's useful for people doing SEO, not much else.

hayksaakian··on Tell HN: A case of negative SEO I caught on my service and how I dealt with it
it looks like my post is too old at his point to allow me to edit it. If DanG or any mods are around, I would appreciate if you could remove the link on my previous post.
hayksaakian··on Google Has Been Allowing Advertisers to Exclude Nonbinary People from Seeing Job
I'm sympathetic to the cause here, but the bigger problem is that excluding "unknown" has value in the sense of "don't show my advertising to people that google can't track" or "people who aren't logged in and Google can't guess".

They could probably fix this by distinguishing between people who don't select a particular gender vs people who Google doesn't know anything about.

hayksaakian··on Tell HN: A case of negative SEO I caught on my service and how I dealt with it
if you look through their source code there are ad tags.

view-source:https://[redacted].com/titansgrave--the-ashes-of-valkana/sea...

unless you have a competitor you really hates you for some personal vendetta, it's exceptionally rare to see this level of effort for the purpose of negative SEO in 2021.

like I said just looks like a spammer going for low hanging fruit, throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks

hayksaakian··on Tell HN: A case of negative SEO I caught on my service and how I dealt with it
Like the poster above -- I don't think it's negative SEO either.

I think it's just an opportunistic person who saw an easy way to rank their own stuff by taking advantage of your hard work

Like you said -- they ranked higher in some cases (without doing any work besides copying you).

hayksaakian··on Product Manager vs. Product Marketing Manager vs. Product Owner
Sounds like a recipe for bureaucracy and ambiguous leadership. I can't imagine this ever working outside of a tech company with fat enough margins to keep 3 separate leads on an individual team.
hayksaakian··on Show HN: My multiplayer custom-engine game that loads in less than a second
correct, spammers bought them when they were heavily discounted and attached negative brand association to them.

plenty of other options without baggage out there nowadays.

hayksaakian··on Introducing Open Web Docs
it's ambiguous, because technically Mozilla could retain ownership of MDN but delegate maintenance to this new entity.
hayksaakian··on Right to Repair off to the races in 2021 with 14 active states
The equivalent for the california labels of "this might give you cancer" would be something like "you might be able to replace the battery"

At least I would hope the french scores / standards would be objective enough to be useful.

if california had a "cancer scale" or something it would be more useful than it is today. Maybe that lead paint is "grade a cancer" but your bed sheets are only a "grade d cancer" i dunno.

hayksaakian··on Introducing Open Web Docs
it's a separate legal entity, independent of Mozilla intended to document the web.

It seems like they're going to 'own' MDN from a funding perspective among other future proejcts

my short summary is: Mozilla is spinning-off MDN into a separate entity

that separate entity may attracting funding and donations that wouldn't normally contribute to Mozilla for various reasons in the same amounts

I think Google Wave proved that UX confusion was a bigger hurdle than the tech for collaborative editing.
hayksaakian··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
There's no intentional or manual effort at Google to promote pinterest.

Pinterest shows up because they understand how the Google algorithm works and built their website to display all the signals that Google looks for in relevant image content.

They understand user intent and generate URLs that present content in a way that google expects to see.

Examples of how they do this from their engineering team:

hayksaakian··on YC Startup School for future founders who aren't quite ready to start yet
being young, broke, and healthy helped me get my first company going without being distracted by decision fatigue because often times the decision was made for me.

having a handful of mentors who can tell you "you're asking the wrong questions, ask yourself X instead" saved me a lot of time early on.

hayksaakian··on YC Startup School for future founders who aren't quite ready to start yet
Ultimately a lot of the trivia doesn't really matter for your success or failure.

High level thinking combined with effort and luck are what helps you "make it" in my eyes.

If your tech startup should succeeds or fails in spite of the particular corporate credit you choose.

This is the same problem with youtubers who have 0 subscribers obsessing over what particular camera they need to buy, all while people are growing massive audiences with little more than a cell phone camera and a message that resonates.

hayksaakian··on Netflix CEO explains why he pays technologists huge salaries
Right that's the theory and you can read about it in his various books.

So instead of paying $260k per year for 10 engineers (2.6M), they might pay 451k for 3 "10x" engineers (1.3M). Costs are 50% lower overall, and if the engineers are even 2x more productive than the average you "break even".

Smaller staff means you need fewer managers.

I'm not saying this is actually how it works in real life (can a developer really be 10x more productive? who know). This is just their operating theory.

hayksaakian··on Costco Convinces Brands to Cannibalize Themselves
the flip side of this is to ensure you actually have all the things you paid for.

if you paid for 6 loaves of bread, but you only have 4 in your cart that's also a problem.

hayksaakian··on Costco Convinces Brands to Cannibalize Themselves
Imagine you sell 10M units of vodka per year.

if your goal is to sell 20 million more bottles of vodka, you could use your existing unit economics and marketing campaigns to scale to 20M additional units

OR

you could manufacture 20M units with a different label and ship them to costco, investing no additional money on marketing for that effort in exchange for a lower wholesale price.

hayksaakian··on Ask HN: Google removed my site from search results, what can I do?
Sounds good, good luck. Assuming your name is relatively unique then this should be something that resolves within 4-6 weeks. If it takes longer you might need to do some high profile PR to get the name out there and linked to the right place.
hayksaakian··on Ask HN: Google removed my site from search results, what can I do?
Were you (1) using example.github.io as a CNAME with another domain, or (2) were people going to example.github.io directly?

I'm still not 100% clear on how the previous domain was configured with github pages

if it's 1) then you should be able to set up redirects for the domain using something like cloudflare to serve the 301s to the old domain.

if it's 2) then there really aren't any more "simple" solutions that you can implement purely technically. You've already added the canonical reference and the meta refresh. You could also add an A tag link to "Download the software on our new website" in addition to the other measures. Users are already sent over via the meta refresh, but the link will encourage crawlers who skip that tag to find you as well.

If your goal is to show up when people search the name of the software (example: "iterm2"), then the solution is to register on every possible social media website you can find and link them to your new domain. In addition to that it's worth using an online PR service to distribute a press release with a link to your new site announcing the new domain.

If there's a more generic term (example: "mac terminal software") then you've got a longer road ahead of you with a regular SEO campaign.
