hawkjo··on Anthropic's Model Naming, Extrapolated
Allegory, Reference, Anthology, Edict, Appendix
hawkjo··on CERN levels up with new superconducting karts
And Yoshi. And Pfirsich, which is Peach in German
hawkjo··on 'Ten Martini' Proof Uses Number Theory to Explain Quantum Fractals
The cantor set exists in a real phenomenon? Any real phenomenon? That makes me feel like we live in a simulation perhaps more than anything else I’ve heard. This story is a nice description of the people, but I want more on implications. What is going on here?
hawkjo··on New antibiotic that kills drug-resistant bacteria found in technician's garden
Producing large quantities of drug resistant bacteria sounds at least BSL3. The principle might make sense, but one wouldn’t “spray the fields” of something like that.
hawkjo··on Talkin’ about a Revolution
Nice article, but framing it around the doomsday clock felt like the author just needed to express his angst on whatever page was in front of him
hawkjo··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
This comment and the article they came from are a perfect snapshot of this moment. The fact that major players at each company have made public statements about the philosophical definition of what a photo is. I mean, of course they have. Of course. The times be wild.
hawkjo··on Kelly Can't Fail
Very cool to see no variance in the outcome. But that also makes it feel like there should be a strategy with better expected return due to the unique problem structure. Do we know if the Kelly strategy is optimal here?
hawkjo··on The backlash against the world's most hated font may be ending
Comic Sans getting all this hate… Papyrus is feeling left out

hawkjo··on Meditations on Moloch (2014)
Beautiful
hawkjo··on Tom Lehrer has released all of his songs into the public domain
The contents of disc 3 are the same as disc 2, even though the file is named correctly. Is there another link for that one?
hawkjo··on Mars’s Soundscape Is Strangely Beautiful
Thank you! Frustrating this was not obvious in the article
hawkjo··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to Wolfram Alpha?
This is amazing! The rest of this thread completely buried the lead. Delightful.
hawkjo··on 5k Year Old Bog Oak Table: Digging up 4k-year-old trees for furniture
So, how do we find out when they put it on display at Ely Cathedral?
hawkjo··on AlphaFold: a solution to a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology
So how fast does the prediction model run? Will they soon be publishing predictions for millions of known sequences?
hawkjo··on Awfice – A collection of tiny office suite apps
Love the package name Awfice. Aww.
hawkjo··on Ask HN: Recommend me a course on Coursera
I have to also mention nandgame.com here. Similar idea, but all presented as an interactive, browser-based game. Start with nand gates and build up to a functioning computer. You never get to tetris, but it's great and super easy to start playing/learning. Delightful.
hawkjo··on The Life of a Data Byte
Cool article. Another future method is the use of DNA (e.g. [1], [2]). Not good for speed, but with more development it could become a great solution for large-volume, low-access archival data.

hawkjo··on Frink
What does this do that mathcad doesn’t?
hawkjo··on Japanese addressing system
Yeah, you got it. Building numbers—banchi blocks—label the age of the building, not its position in space. The only people for whom many addresses are physically findable seems to be people from the neighborhood who have memorized the arbitrary number of each building. Google maps is a blessed thing generally, but an absolute godsend when visiting Japan.
hawkjo··on I don't know how CPUs work so I simulated one in code
Quick shout out to NAND Game, a version of this laid out as a computer game. Delightful, free, web-based.

hawkjo··on Mariana Trench: Deepest-ever sub dive finds plastic bag
The most exciting news is that they made several extremely deep dives in quick succession, advancing the way to a future of regular deep sea exploration. Congrats to the team!
hawkjo··on Where is π today? The nature of the mathematical universe
This is of the same flavor as wondering if said species would invent money, a collective fiction of usefulness so obvious it has been created many times. Or perhaps it’s closer to wondering if they would develop futures on a stock market.
hawkjo··on Google Docs gets an API for task automation
Does this mean managed bibliographies will finally become a reality in google docs? That’s the only thing keeping me from using it much.
