hausen··on Rydberg atoms detect clear signals from a handheld radio
Considering the mention to Family Radio Service, most likely they're demodulating FM.
hausen··on Twinge of Saudade: Biographies of Abba
Another Brazilian here: I'm pretty sure "yearning" is that equivalent noun.
hausen··on Peeking underground with giant flying antennas
Yes, if you scale down the antenna/coil (and the aerial vehicle). https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/a-ukrainian-teenag...
hausen··on Why isn't dental health considered primary medical care?
The link between oral and cardiovascular health is well known: https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/gum-d...

So, yes, even outside of emergency situations, lots of people die because they cannot/won't see a dentist.

hausen··on The politicization of society is damaging liberal democracy
The original title is "The extension of political conflict is corroding liberal democracy," which better reflects the opinion in the article.

The editorialized title ("the politicization of society is damaging liberal democracy") frankly doesn't do the article any justice.

hausen··on New type of ultraviolet light makes indoor air as safe as outdoors
Not in significant quantities. Another study also using Far-UV excimer lamps [1] measured levels of less than 0.005 ppm, which is far below the 0.05 ppm maximum allowed by the FDA for medical devices [2].

hausen··on Fixed Point Arithmetic
Nice explanation! May I suggest a tiny addition to the text? Fixed point (in decimal) is also useful to make sure 1 trillion dimes are 100 billion dollars instead of $99,999,997,952.
hausen··on Some Night-Shift Workers May Have a 300% Higher Risk of Car Crashes
FDA-cleared pulse oximeters must be accurate to ±4% SpO2.

hausen··on How the Internet Archive digitizes 78rpm records
There is such a laser record player, which costs $15k [1] and can only play black vinyl records [2].

hausen··on Lobster shell patterns make concrete stronger
Some higher-quality plywood does have layers whose grain is at 45 degrees to the adjacent layers: https://www.globalpp.co.uk/blog/why-do-plywood-layers-run-in...
hausen··on I stole the data in millions of people’s Google accounts
The title isn't truthful to the content. @dang, can you please change it? Should be something along the lines of "how to steal data from Google accounts." As the author states waaay down in the article, they didn't actually do it, they're merely showing how.
hausen··on WiFi 6 gets 1.34 Gbps on the Raspberry Pi CM4
There's at least one reported case of a PCIe multiplier card working with the Pi4: http://labs.domipheus.com/blog/raspberry-pi-4-pci-express-it...
hausen··on How Do You Make Turbo Engines More Efficient? Just Add Water
I'm no expert either, but according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_injection_(engine), it actually reduces emissions.
hausen··on MXE: Windows cross-compile environment for Unix
It's not very clear, but in Supported Toolchains, there is "Runtime: MinGW-w64."
hausen··on Accurate CRT Simulation
Your old CRT is probably PAL-M, a variant of PAL. Was it made in Brazil? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL-M#Compatibility
hausen··on Naughty words: What makes swear words so offensive?
Although it may be true that "les sacres" (swear words derived from religious terms) were a form of insurgency against the power of the church, their usage extends far back into the beginning of the 19th century: http://www.maisonsaint-gabriel.qc.ca/fr/musee/chr-20.php
hausen··on Communicating with people on psychedelics
You should have your eyes checked. Halos around bright light sources may be caused by cataracts.

Cataracts generally affect the elderly, but young people may also have it due to genetic factors or medication (such as corticosteroids).

hausen··on Symbolic derivative calculator in JavaScript
Fixed it! Thanks!
hausen··on Harvard researchers build $10 robot to teach kids to code
The project page has more details, including the schematic, PCB layout and BOM: https://sites.google.com/site/affordableeducationrobot/home

The circuit is pretty simple, to keep the parts count low and, consequently, the price. An Atmega168 is the brain of this project.

hausen··on Reverse engineering a counterfeit 7805 voltage regulator
You could use Inkscape for that -- it generates an SVG file that can be manipulated with javascript by adding a <script> tag. For an example, see: http://hausen.github.io/control.svg and http://hausen.github.io/control.js . No need to postprocess anything!
hausen··on Kale, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts are all the same species
Biologists and botanists have a way to avoid any confusion. For them, they belong to the same genus, but not to the same species.
hausen··on Tech Blogger Tries To Cancel Comcast Service, Hilarity Ensues
Or tell them you got free internet and cable for life from one of their competitors (and if they ask how you got it, tell them you changed jobs and you now work for them). It would be impossible for them to match that offer, so they'll just leave you alone. If they do match that offer, it's still a win!

It has already worked for me more than once (unfortunately, nobody ever tried to offer me free service).

hausen··on Higher antioxidant, lower cadmium, and lower pesticide residues in organic crops [pdf]
Not only it is a poor press release, but it has FALSE information.

"The study, published today in the prestigious British Journal of Nutrition..."

The study, entitled “Higher antioxidant concentrations and less cadmium and pesticide residues in organically-grown crops: a systematic literature review and meta-analyses,” is nowhere to be found, either on the BJN website, or elsewhere on the web.

Until the peer-reviewed results are out, consider it as hype, not science. I wish I could mod down the submission.

hausen··on Vermeer's paintings might be 350 year-old color photographs
> There is that little black stick on the top right of the canvas, wonder what that is?

It's a mahl stick. http://painting.about.com/od/artglossarym/g/defmahlstick.htm

hausen··on "Fixing" xkcd 1340
I may have weaseled out of the problem by using "may" instead of "will" in the new version at https://github.com/hausen/xkcd-clock .

Timekeeping enthusiasts: please clone, fork, and/or submit a pull request. You can now easily change the text to suit your needs.

hausen··on "Fixing" xkcd 1340
Yeah, I should have printed a UNIX timestamp instead... ;)

A better workaround would be to write "Under our system that time and date may only happen at most once again!" in Cueball's speech bubble.

hausen··on How not to prove that P is not equal to NP
Gaaah! My eyes! You assumed that P = NP, therefore you cannot divide by P - NP = P - P = 0.

I think that mistake shows that even finding a mock proof for the fact that P != NP is hard.

hausen··on Python trademark at risk in Europe
The argument works both ways: if the PSF cannot assert a trademark on the name "Python," the owners of the python.co.uk domain shouldn't be able to take ownership of the name either. Why are they trying to do it right now?
