hatsix··on Apple introduces M4 chip
The cheapest point of entry is absolutely not comparable. The cheapest new iPhone on apple.com is $429. The cheapest new Samsung on samsung.com is $199 (They do have a phone listed for $159, but it's button says "Notify Me").

Granted, you may have been leaning very heavily on the dictionary definition of "comparable", in that the two numbers are able to be compared. However, when the conclusion of that comparison is "More than twice the price", I think you should lead with that.

Keep in mind, the iPhone SE is using a 3 year old processor, the Samsung A15 was released 5 months ago with a brand new processor.

hatsix··on Apple introduces M4 chip
There is no user buying a lowest-tier Macbook Air who would be able to tell the difference between the Lenovo SSD and the Macbook SSD.
hatsix··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Yes, but having all three of those things (well, specs/performance is probably just one thing, but treating them as separate as you did means that I don't have to do the heavy lifting of figuring out what a third thing would actually be) IS, in fact, a luxury.

Nobody is away from a power source for longer than 18 hours. MOST people don't need the performance that a macbook air has, their NEEDS would be met by a raspberry pi... that is, basic finances, logging into various services, online banking, things that first world citizens "rely" on.

The definition of luxury is "great comfort and extravagance", and every current Apple product fits that definition. Past Apple definitely had non-luxury products, as recently as the iPhone C (discontinued 10 years ago)... but Apple has eliminated all low-value options from their lineup.

hatsix··on Ask HN: How to do simple heartbeat monitoring?
Before resorting to Synthetics, you can use Cloudwatch to setup anomaly reporting on the load balancer. If your requests drop to 0 in 5/10/15 minutes, alert... If you have more than N 500s in 5/10/15 minutes, alert.

Synthetics are there to tell you when something outside of your provider is breaking your website, like routing errors, geo-related issues, CDN issues (assuming you're not using your provider's CDN).

hatsix··on Apple to unveil AI-enabled Safari alongside new operating systems
how long until there are ads injected into the article contents so that AI will include it in a summary, or SEO hacks are replaced with server side text insertions specifically for the AI spiders?
hatsix··on Apple's risky bet on CarPlay
While Tesla does have a $10/m plan, you still get basic Internet without paying for it... Tesla's free is better than any other company's paid subscription.

That said, $10 is far too much for what it is, should be $5.

hatsix··on Apple's risky bet on CarPlay
it is not just that, and cheap decks with laggy carplay/AA unfortunately prove that some processing happens external to the phone
hatsix··on The Arc Product-Market Fit Framework
iPhone and Vision Pro are also not future vision. Both enter a market at the high end, with established competitors. BlackBerry and Nokia had smart phones that were functionally equivalent, but they were marketed towards business users and worked best with corporate integration. Apple delivered a phone that focused on personal use. Vision Pro is entering market where the competitors are focused solely on gaming or augmented work (hololens) with a product that doesn't do either, yet... but everyone is starry-eyed about what it might enable, some day.

1980s Apple, otoh, fully in the nose.

hatsix··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
Note: Deforestation continues at a record pace in tropical areas, which leads to less trees and plants to consume the CO2. The exact parts of the planet that should be thriving is being turned into cattle pastures.

The other big sink for CO2 is the ocean, which does not thrive on CO2. CO2 in water turns the water more acidic, which affects the base of the food chain.

There's no propaganda that suggests that plants don't thrive in CO2.

This isn't "Woke Mind Virus", it's just Corporate Pandering. Apple has a huge PR problem with their factories in China, and they've determined that it's cheaper to "Be Green" than to fix their supply chain or move manufacturing back to the US. Their moves towards being green aren't "Bad", but they wouldn't be doing it if they didn't have to create PR to paper over the things they're doing that are actually Bad.

hatsix··on The /unblock API from Browserless: dodging bot detection as a service
the problem isn't scraping, the problem is the "content" that is being "created".

A site I worked on changed our captcha, and in the 24 hours after, we had a 90% reduction in new accounts. We had a full API including webhooks, the only private data was on the account page, there was no reason to scrape, but even if you did, there was no reason to be logged in... these accounts were used to harass, intimidate and scam legitimate users.

hatsix··on Amazon blocks long-running FireTV capability, Breaking apps with no warning
I've been happy with my FireTV cubes... they feel like the right amount of horsepower thrown at a TV...

Obviously, performance scales with price... the $20 HDMI sticks are the bulk of the devices out there, but honestly, it's surprising what they can do for $20. (The "Lite" is currently 2 for $35)

hatsix··on Coding in Vision Pro
sure, they're small, but some of them are closer to your eye lense than your retina. The pixels per degree are lower than any Apple product in the past 10 years
hatsix··on Cloud Egress Costs
Our 20tb/m costs us $414... if you're saying that you can amortize those servers, rent the space and pay for upkeep for less than $4k a month?

We have another service that has 20x the bandwidth, but it's a legacy GAE that has super cheap premium egress... But I'm told that AWS says that their pre-pay discount will be competitive in about a year, the rate that we're growing.

The negotiated egress prices are much lower, so long as you are buying future egress. If they're not worried about you jumping ship (you use a lot of their aws-native services), you can get a great deal.

hatsix··on My favourite Git commit (2019)
Nah, first line needs to be a summary of what you changed, so that you can find the offending commit in the first place.

A news article doesn't explain WHY in the headline, it explains what.

In this case, the OP's first line is spot on... if you're reading through git log, you can see that this commit likely didn't change anything functional about a test, and you should move on.

hatsix··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
Your BMW 1 series is considered a luxury car. A new sedan is close to twice the Model 3.

Tesla is not a luxury car company. You pay a premium for the electric part, and put up with everything else.

They took a risk that nobody else was willing to make and proved a market. We're in a better place, ecologically speaking because of them. Their cars are also cheaply made. Now that manufacturers that know what they're doing are competing, Tesla is in trouble.

hatsix··on Breaking free of plastic pollution
If you're not familiar with different types of social etiquette, then you simply don't know enough to participate in discussions.

In this case, educate. Let's assume that you're correct... you have specific knowledge that could change the way the OP thinks about plastic. What exactly is your goal of participating in this conversation if it isn't to have a back and forth and learn from each other?

Maybe, by actually having a conversation with this person, you could better understand what misconceptions exist and how to combat them?

it's a great counterpoint, because they're is a lot of literature on the health effects of caffeine.

> Maybe both aren't great for you?

Maybe? You are the one making strong assertions about vasoconstrictors. Maybe you should take this opportunity to challenge your beliefs on this by digging into scientific literature.

Also, "aren't great" is such a softening of your original opinion "just terrible". Why argue for your ignorance when there is actual scientific literature?

hatsix··on Show HN: OpenSign – Open source alternative to DocuSign
The commenter is confused, they mean infringing, not theft.

Theft is theft, no reason to get IP law involved.

Infringement can happen without intent. I don't know who would be liable, the open source company with little revenue, or the customers who are just using the software.

hatsix··on Bandcamp's Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off
It clearly wasn't random, in fact, they said as much. It's a cost-cutting effort, and US salaries are generally much higher than non-US salaries.

If you want to know the odds, you'd have to know their criteria. You can't assume that it was random, because it definitely wasn't. (Though, I've seen the aftermath of a random layoff, I'd take criteria'd layoff every day, even if I'm the one with the pink slip.)

hatsix··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
Shown how? I keep seeing reference to a webpage on Bandcamp that was published over 5 years ago.
hatsix··on Google Cloud Spanner is now half the cost of Amazon DynamoDB
Sure, You can compare Cloud SQL vs Cloud Spanner and RDS vs Dynamo, but it makes more sense to just say "Postgres" and assume that the reader can figure out that it means "Whatever managed postgres service you want to use".

The entire point is that every cloud provider has a managed postgres offering, and there's no vendor lock-in. Though, technically, Dynamo does have a docker image you could run in other cloud providers if it came down to that, you'd get no support for it.
