hatsix··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
There is no spying by any definition. It's a chatbot, not a diary. Anthropic is expected to read the message and respond to it in some way. If you sent an email to a colleague threatening violence, you would not be surprised to find out it was reported.
hatsix··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
It's different issues in different places, and when built/operated by different companies. Global companies that put their name on the facility will be more careful of optics than a PE firm that hides behind shell companies.

This was an intentional fallacy for comedic effect, specifically "No True Scotsman"
hatsix··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
Sadly, Italian officials know about tor and will do whatever they can to bypass geo restrictions. We got hit with a fine, this isn't speculation.

Texas has indicated that it will hold companies liable even if users bypass age verification via VPN or anonymizers.

This isn't the industry deciding that they really want age verification, this is the industry deciding that they don't want to face the potential litigation. Complain about the laws, not the companies following the laws.

hatsix··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
There are several jurisdictions that require companies to ensure that age limits are not bypassed via VPN or anonymizers. This puts the companies in a catch-22, block all VPN and anonymizers access, restricting many people with no recourse, or applying the age rules unilaterally, restricting some teens, but giving recourse to adults using VPNs.

It is not, as you say, "a risk to the privacy and safety of all users", but rather just those marked as needing to verify.

Your hyperbolic rant is uninformed and tiring.

hatsix··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
I've never had Microsoft read a message, initiate an AI generation, then attempt to inject that into my conversation.

Not to say they wouldn't try...

hatsix··on I added a non-wi-fi Mitsubishi AC to Home Assistant
I've got four units already hooked up with esphome, but the branch box diagnostics is what I need... the unpredictable nature of multi zone units is infuriating. Why is one room 10 degrees above it's set point and still pumping out heat?

I've got my own devices and can make my own cables, if you're looking for someone to test things out

hatsix··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
The danger is in the replacement. Confiding in others builds a web of trust. Talking about a break-up with a friend builds a relationship, and the next time that friend needs someone, they know you're an option. It's economics, borrowing and trading emotional support. AI as confidant destroys that economy.
hatsix··on Caltech Mathathon – first hackathon ever devoted to research level mathematics
Don't respond to a strawman argument with another strawman. The post you are responding to ignored the reasons given in the second paragraph. They're just trying to score points by preaching to the choir, not engage with the concern.

hatsix··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
no, inflation is the cost of goods rising because money is worth less.

This is capitalism, as demand increases, so does price, regardless of the cogs.

hatsix··on The Amazon Tax
right, you've spent most of your capital on product, and now you're competing with everyone else on $/ad.

Amazon, the store, has an incentive to show trending products, rather than items that sold well 10 years ago... if you already own the old standard, and you do a search and find it's still the highest in search results, you'll be unlikely to buy.

hatsix··on John Deere owners will get the right to repair equipment under FTC settlement
Right to repair doesn't change any of that. Farmers were adjusting that screw anyways, that was the entire point. I'm not mad at farmers for doing it, I'm mad at John Deere at cheating the system.

hatsix··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
The price you're objecting to is the heavily subsidized cost, it'll be 4x that in 12 months
hatsix··on If you are asking for human attention, demonstrate human effort
This is such a weird take. From my 5 years at Amazon, the only people I saw "managed out" were engineers who were good, it even great, at the code part of their job, but trash at working with the team. Our hiring bar was notoriously high, and it wasn't uncommon for engineers who were leads at their startup to get hired at L5.

When I was Bar Raising for promotions, I didn't review their PRs, I reviewed their Reviews. I reviewed the PRs that mentioned those reviews to see what slipped by. I looked at non-crunch time to verify they were reviewing at least as much code as their teammates.

If I saw someone 4x-ing the amount of code, they had better be 4x-ing the reviews too... if all they were leaving was stylistic formatting comments, they'd never make it to L6, unless the only thing they were reviewing was L6 code.

hatsix··on WWDC 2026: Apple is Folding
if by 'revolutionize', you mean 'let everybody else spend time, effort and money developing the idea, and once they've proven the market they buy an interesting company in the space with tons of patents, shut down everything they'd done before and make their interesting and take credit for the revolution, meanwhile, their new presence in the area mutes actual innovation, because they use all of the oxygen in the room'... sure, yeah, they do that... but the revolution was coming whether Apple participated or not.

Apple is great at winning capitalism.

hatsix··on Siri AI
I'm glad someone is worried about Apple's money.
hatsix··on LLMs are eroding my software engineering career and I don't know what to do
Does the carpenter who used to build custom fit cabinets with hand and power tools put in the same creativity when he just carries around a scanner, scans the area, the customers use software to select the layout, approve the work, then the CNC cuts out the wood, then all that's left is to put the screws in the holes and go home.

This isn't like the step from hand saws to power saws, and it's disingenuous to pretend like it is. This is what the startup machine has been doing to every industry... finding... "inefficiencies" and "optimizing" them.

hatsix··on Cloudflare Turnstile requiring fingerprintable WebGL
it's probably because a scraper farm updated their services to latest, and there was a window where fingerprinting was unable to differentiate.

We had all of our Devs Pixels get blocked, and after talking to CF, it was because Internet archive was rebooted their scraping farm, all the devices stampeded and overwhelmed the known bot safeguards, and those tags were added across the board. CF gives sites the tools to tune what is getting blocked, we bumped the sensitivity down to 25 and haven't had many complaints (despite having a very vocal community)

The most common complaint is users' IP address getting blocked because of compromised devices

hatsix··on Launch HN: Chert (YC P26) – Twilio for iMessage
This impersonates a person on a platform which has generally prevented that... so people will be more likely to have a conversation, as they don't expect it to be a bot. The fact that they'll have to rotate out iMessage accounts so the message history will kill any possible gain from the deception.

What I don't understand is why a business would want to bifurcate their messaging stack... this is a solution that only works for half of their customers... for a business that doesn't have an app.

hatsix··on Security researcher says Microsoft built a Bitlocker backdoor, releases exploit
Nonsense. there are way more accommodations for people who wouldn't have had a place 20 years ago... those accommodations have changed what a "standard IC" is. There never was a place for run-of-the-mill geniuses who couldn't be bothered to spend a few hours researching P2P (Person to Person) protocols. They were always pushed off to small companies where the risk was much lower. This hasn't, won't, and shouldn't change. If that makes you salty, I got some things I'd recommend you research.
