hashberry··on The 'SimCity' Empire Has Fallen and 'Skylines' Is Picking Up the Pieces
It's amazing what a small team with a great vision can do. They had the expertise and delivered what customers wanted.

It's also sad how a large company can lose track of what made its previous products so great. EA tried to "innovate" SimCity 5, except they were "innovating" the game for themselves (e.g. get users online to make it easier to buy upgrades), not the end-user. Gamers did not want a multiplayer-based city simulation with limited scale and broken mechanics.

hashberry··on Ask HN: What should I learn first, Algorithms or ..?
You should start with what interests you. Passion is a strong motivator for learning.
hashberry··on Programmer Passion Considered Harmful
That is a horrible example: a physical product that was assembled by third-world clock-punchers in mind-numbing, depressing factories.
hashberry··on Study: Teen Cannabis Users Have Poor Long-Term Memory in Adulthood
Cannabis is less harmful than tobacco because it can be ingested or vaporized. There are no Tobacco Brownies or candies.
hashberry··on Are tablets falling out of favour?
My tablet has been replaced by my Chromebook for everyday usage. I like my keyboard and not having to "set up" the screen for viewing. With a tablet you have to hold it in your hands or get a fancy case or prop it up against something. And I cannot escape my love for the tactile keyboard! Does anyone actually enjoy writing and editing emails or comments on a tablet versus a keyboard?
hashberry··on Ask HN: What do you wish you had known before you turned 40?
The dual mating strategies of women, who classify men into lovers or providers.

hashberry··on Self Taught Web Dev -What Should I Do?
Find an entry level job for on-paper resume experience and keep jumping ship to better paid positions.

You have no paid work experience and no portfolio and no open source code so no one is going to pay you $80K. Gotta work your way up.

I started working at my university as a student webdev. Then got an entry level job at a firm, then kept finding better paid positions. Employers want to see work experience.

hashberry··on How One Stupid Tweet Blew Up Justine Sacco’s Life
Ever notice how most "Social Justice Warriors" are women who love to stir up drama? As the NYTimes article states, this incident was highly entertaining to many people.
hashberry··on Web sucks and here’s how we can make it awesome
Using PHP to give an example of why the Web sucks is like saying MS-DOS sucks because of QBasic.
hashberry··on Web sucks and here’s how we can make it awesome
The Web was built to deliver interlinked hypertext documents and it succeeds at this goal.

"I see two things that could help the web ... a standardized and modern UI API, like any decent OS has, and a means of executing any other programming languages on the client side."

The author is trying to redefine the Web as an Operating System.

hashberry··on It's Time to stop using the word 'Retard'
idiot -> moron -> retard -> special -> mentally challenged -> person with learning difficulties
hashberry··on It's Time to stop using the word 'Retard'
As a boy, the word "retard" was part of my vocabulary. I used it to describe concepts that were dumb or irrational. I continued to use it into adulthood without thinking. I did not realize how offensive it was until my girlfriend called me out on it. So now I just use the word "dumb." I hope I am not offending any groups now.
hashberry··on The Life of a PHP Developer
The PHP ecosystem is huge. There are so many different platforms and frameworks. I can see myself as a PHP dev the rest of my career. It's easy money and if you're a decent dev you automatically stand out from everyone else.
hashberry··on Feminist video-games talk pulled after massacre threat
Shaming male hetrosexuality is Feminism 101. Yes, I am attracted to young, maternal, intelligent women who like to smile.
hashberry··on Feminist video-games talk pulled after massacre threat
It better be. She raised $158K on Kickstarter to make these YouTube videos. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/566429325/tropes-vs-wom...
hashberry··on Is Kindness Physically Attractive?
Have you ever met a seriously ugly girl with an incredible personality? I have, and it sucks. No fire, no passion, no sexual desire. She might as well be a dude. Physical attraction is important for a romantic relationship.
hashberry··on Why women leave tech: It's the culture, not because 'math is hard'
To put that quote in context of who said it, you don't sympathize because you're not a gay black woman who gets called "Halle Berry" by her white, straight, male co-workers. I believe in the Tumblr world, an animated "Check your privilege" GIF would be inserted here.
hashberry··on An Australian researcher has worked out how to store 1000TB on a CD
It's actually about optical discs. But "CD" is the vernacular for optical discs. Kind of like "hard drive." Modern laptops don't have hard drives--they have solid-state drives, but people still refer to their storage as a "hard drive."
hashberry··on After raising $50M, Reddit forces all remote workers to relocate to SF
"Optimal teamwork" = filling your day with meetings meetings and more meetings!
hashberry··on A Reminder To Investors
The power dynamic of sex influences men's inappropriate behavior. The investor no doubt had a sexual fantasy when he invited the female CEO over to his house and began drinking wine and massaging her. He wanted his investment to be symbolic, to reduce her to a whore. This is misogyny.
hashberry··on I'm A Thinker, Not a Do-er
You're not a thinker--you're a procrastinator.

There a deep emotional issues causing your anxiety, probably from your childhood. You need to get out of your head. You're stuck in an endless loop.

hashberry··on Stopping the Exodus of Women in Science
So, the problem is the workplace is too masculine because there are too many men in science and engineering.

Except if you do a search for "women leaving workforce" you'll find it's a trend for middle-aged women across all fields.

hashberry··on Ask HN: How would you invest your money in 2014?
The Fed's obsession with trying to control the market is horrifying. QE is a manipulation of capitalism. If this truly is a bubble, a crash will devastate the economy and take out housing with it. A third recession will have no easy fixes.
hashberry··on Google+ now lets you use any name you want
I refuse to become emotionally invested in G+ because Google is infamous for shutting down products that aren't used by the majority of its users. Reading all the negative comments from this post reaffirms my decision.
hashberry··on The Tao of Programming
This is more akin to literature. Many stories are full of men, but this doesn't mean they are irrelevant to women. No one is purposely trying to exclude you.
hashberry··on How much do salaried programmers really work?
~3 hours per day. When you become specialized it's easy to complete work quickly. The salary is paying you to be reliable.
hashberry··on 24 Hours of Privilege
For some people the difficulty level of life is on "Easy."
hashberry··on The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz [video]
The film implies he was a victim and does not criticize his suicide, only the laws and people who drove him to kill himself. Martyrdom: "a display of feigned or exaggerated suffering to obtain sympathy or admiration."
hashberry··on Wealth Levels, Wealth Inequality, and the Great Recession [pdf]
The average American is not wealthy. The median net worth is $45K [1], which is below Japan, Canada, Australia and much of Western Europe.
