It was not not built 'by hand'. For example here is a photo of a steam powered excavator being used. https://original-ufdc.uflib.ufl.edu/CA90000065/00001 The entire site is fascinating collection of photos from the construction https://original-ufdc.uflib.ufl.edu/railroads

I was fortunate to be at the Tate for that exhibition and got to see when they turned the 'sun' off at closing time. I was visiting my brother in London at the time, he wasn't a big fan of modern art, so we split up, I went to the Tate, he went elsewhere to sight see, then later at dinner after effusing over the 'sun' exhibit and showing him photos of how cool it was, we rushed across town to get in just before closing. We got to see it together for about 10 minutes, before they turned it off. It went from a Sun to the Moon. Spectacular.

The natural outcome of the non delegation theory is that every member of congress needs to work at the mint printing money as that power can not be delegated to anyone else, federal prisons must close because there is no way we have enough representatives to run them.
harywilke··on New Aztec Codices Discovered: The Codices of San Andrés Tetepilco
What survives is sometimes just by sheer luck. In the Acropolis Museum, there are a few reproductions of sketches on display by Jacques Carrey, a french artist who happened to visit Athens in November 1674. The Venetian's siege of the Acropolis in September 1687 famously destroyed a large section of the South side. Without this artists sketches, we would have no record of these lost parts of the frieze.
harywilke··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
It's amazing that barely a 100 years ago The Great Debate in astronomy was weather the Milky Way was the extent of the universe or things like Andromeda were their own 'island universes'. In the 1920s, Edwin Hubble showed that Andromeda was far outside the Milky Way by measuring Cepheid variable stars. These are the same stars that we are measuring today in this debate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Debate_(astronomy)
harywilke··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
Dr.Becky goes over this in a video [0] from a year ago about the divergent results obtained by the two main ways we measure the rate of expansion. Cosmic Microwave Background Vs. Supernovae. As the accuracy of each method has improved, the end results have diverged.

This is not a 'food brand' thing. And has been going on for ages. It's awful exploitation. From Microsoft getting their packaging for Windows '95, to Victoria's Secret,Nintendo, and Starbucks.Just to name a few. https://www.prisonlegalnews.org/news/2002/mar/15/prison-coff...

Welcome to the modern web. It sucks. See all the comments (well intended, but illustrative of how bad the default experience is): "Use this defensive technique to keep the hordes of hell from your experience".
harywilke··on Should you add screenshots to documentation?
The screenshot could be more clear by highlighting 'file' and 'Translate PlusCal Algoritm'. This could be useful in skimming the documentation, but i think this could be a case of where text would be the clearer option.
harywilke··on A trip to see Chicagoland Sears houses
Etymology. Chicago +‎ land. Generally thought to have been popularized by Robert R. McCormick, editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune, first using it on page 1 of the July 27, 1926 issue, although it may have been coined much earlier.
harywilke··on How to Make Your Own Spooky Magic Eye Pictures (Autostereograms)
In in astronomy, they used to use a similar technique to 'spot the difference' between photographs of the night sky to find moving objects. They used a special stereo microscope that would place one image in front of each eye. The images were of the same part of the night sky, but separated by time. I saw one recently at the Palomar Observatory. Here is a more elaborate one from the National Air and Space museum: https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/microscope-ast...

I've been reading an excellent book on the building of the Palomar Observatory[0]. It's amazing how small we used to think the universe was, a few tens of thousands of light years across. The book is very much a page turner. [0] https://store.palomar.caltech.edu/products/the-perfect-machi...

This is an aside. This [0] is what an attempt at balancing logging, locals, and forest conservation ~150 years ago looked like. The checkerboard effect [1] is pretty striking. This strategy ended up being a disaster for some animals, famously the Northern Spotted Owl.

harywilke··on Psycho and the end of the continuously showing movie
I remember seeing exactly one movie like this. I was with my friends family in the early 1980's. It was terrible. I do remember that they all got up 3/4 through the 2nd screening and we walked out just when it was getting good.

harywilke··on A few things to know before stealing my 914 (2022)
This was the reasoning my friends parents gave for getting her older sister a stick shift. After driving stick a while it just becomes habit. You don't even think about it. Though i do prefer being able to drop down a gear for extra acceleration on the highway, rather than waiting for the automatic transmission to figure it out and change gears 20 seconds after i needed it.
harywilke··on 100 years of Le Corbusier: what does he mean to today’s architects?
Hated him in architecture school. Was assigned the incomprehensible Towards a New Architecture as a first year. Had an argument w/ my professor over The Modular, his 'based on human' measuring system. It's a failure if you present a new system of measurement, but then concede that it doesn't work and you actually need two systems and it's all arbitrary anyway. It really turned me off architecture school. But there was one project of his that I always return to. La Maison Jaoul. It's a beautiful work in brick, tile, wood and concrete. Lots of texture and color that is often missing in the rest of his work. It has some big flaws. small spaces, not enough interest in it's environment, but if you think Corb is only white boxes, it's worth a look. This video is pretty raw, but it gives the best views of the entire house. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJAQTFLdPN0 Also, La Tourette is a cow. complete with an udder. Got to give props for that one.

"* The US leases airbases in Turkey, with nuclear penetration bombers and nuclear warheads stored on site."

My understanding is that the bombs are on site, but the bombers are not.

This from 2019 by The Federation of American Scientists supports that view.[1] "The remaining 50 bombs are for use by US jets, even though Turkey never allowed the US Air Force to permanently base fighter-squadrons at Incirlik. Jets would have to fly in during a crisis to pick up the weapons or they would have to be shipped to other locations before use. As a result, the nuclear posture at Incirlik has been more a storage site than a fighter-bomber base during the past two decades."

harywilke··on Texas moves to create gold-backed digital currency
Yes. It is the stated position of the Texas GOP that they should secede. "33. State Sovereignty: Pursuant to Article 1, Section 1, of the Texas Constitution, the federal government199 has impaired our right of local self-government. Therefore, federally mandated legislation that infringes200 upon the 10th Amendment rights of Texas should be ignored, opposed, refused, and nullified. Texas201 retains the right to secede from the United States, and the Texas Legislature should be called upon to202 pass a referendum consistent thereto."

harywilke··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
So once upon a time my parents in the states sent me, a newly minted ex-pat living in the EU, a package for my birthday. It was mostly cheap plastic kitchen things, a couple of oven mitts and stuff like that. It went to customs. Not only did I have to haul my ass out to the airport, I was charged 120Euro for a box who's entire cost couldn't have been more than 30USD (and I'm being generous). I was informed that if i refused the package, my parents would be charged the full amount. So yes, it's easy to imagine that by the time you get the package in your hands, it costs more than 100% the products price.
harywilke··on How white can white paint get?
In Greece, the iconic whitewashed island house has a public health angle to it. "In 1938, a national order mandated the painting of island homes in blue and white. At the time, Greece was suffering an outbreak of cholera during the dictatorship of Ioannis Metaxas. In an effort to curb the disease, he ordered citizens to whitewash their homes. This might sound strange today, but the whitewash used to paint the houses contained limestone. Limestone is a powerful disinfectant, and not many others were in common use at the time. Greek citizens thus whitewashed their homes to help sanitize them and reduce the spread of cholera." and older

harywilke··on Always look down in London: Pavement oddities
In Athens, Greece my favorite example of this is where you walk over the ancient city walls.

There is a section of wall revealed by a dig in Kotzia square[1]. The nearby paving traces the walls, and further on the National Bank is raised up so you can see the wall continuing on.[2]
