This is exactly how we do it with our very own rudimentary internal library and scripts. Barely enough and even though I worry at times it will break unexpectedly but so far we are surprised by how stable everything has been.

Although I really wish there was a first party solution or a well established library for this but I suspect that while it is easy to build only enough to support specific usecases but building a generic enough solution for everyone would be quite an undertaking.

So I think I finally understood recently why we have these divergent groups with one thinking Claude 3.5 Sonnet is the best model for coding and another that follow the OpenAI SOTA at that moment. I have been a heavy user of ChatGPT, jumping on to pro without even thinking for more than a second once released. Recently though I took a pause from my usual work on statistical modelling, heuristics work and other things in certain deep domains to focus on building client APIs and frontends and decided to again give Claude a try and it is just so great to work with for this usecase.

My hypothesis is its a difference of what you are doing. OpenAI O models are much better than others at mathematical modelling and such tasks and Claude for more general purpose programming.

At this point if you believe they don't produce anything new is either of two things- a) having not given a fair shot to the current flagship models or b) you have a very narrow definition of new that is satisfied only by a very minuscule of human population.

If it's the latter, then agreed it doesn't produce anything new but so doesn't most of humanity and it doesn't need to, to be able to be of assistance.

I wanted to quit smoking for good and that's one thing I am glad is not a part of my life anymore.

With alcohol and caffeine, I never thought I would stick with it for so long. But now that I have there is this inertia in me to break this period of abstinence. I am sure I would start again at some point with liquor although probably in much much lesser quantity and frequency than before.

Caffeine I probably have left for good as I have heard that the longer one goes without it the more pronounced jitteriness gets. And I am not sure I care enough to wait through the period before it normalizes again.

I gave up on alcohol, cannabis and basically almost every stimulant with caffeine and tobacco more than a year ago with sugar and carbs remaining as the last substance I abuse.

I really thought giving up on alcohol and caffeine would have a much bigger impact on me but the only thing I notice is the minor negative effect it has on my social life from not being able to join people in for a beer or not using coffee when needing to pull all-nighters. Maybe it's just me being in late 20s and not old enough for it all to catch up to me.

I am curious if this is usually argued. I thought it that was generally held that agile and similar methodologies at least in the sense that sprints are defined in days/weeks and not months/years is for use cases where the product doesn't have well defined specifications.

Looks great. I am working on side to learn product design by working on a similar system for music. The idea is to have the tactile feel of a vinyl like system but with the features of a digital library and ecosystem. The base implementation was really straightforward and hardly a few hours but to make it bridge the gap we see with our digital tools emulating analog ones is quite fun to work on. From the latency involved between placing the card to the output from a remote service, the sound dial's latency when paired with bluetooth speakers all take one away from the experience. It's also fun to learn little leathercrafting and concrete moulding for the prototype design.

I curated twitter in a similar style with following in my niche interest categories of academics and others with a really good signal-to-noise ratio but post musk purchase most of the accounts I followed either got off the platform, tweet much less frequent and with paid subscribers getting priority the replies feature much less relevant tweets than before. I so desire a space similar to my little corner of twitter but not able to find one anywhere after having tried with X, Mastadon(multiple servers) Bluesky, Threads. Does it still work for you?

Forgive my naiveté here but even though solutions to those finite-information abstract games are trivial but not necessarily tractable(for a loser definition of tractable here) and we still need to build heuristics for the subclass of such problems where we need solutions in a given finite time frame. Those heuristics might not be easy to deduce and hence such models help in ascertaining those.

That's not what I am trying to convey here. JVM is amazing and it is a feat that java is as fast as it is and javascript and v8 are order of magnitude slower.

Also even though I also found java too verbose, I kept believing that we need it to be so to write good software. I still enjoy java but it doesn't compare to the ergonomics of typescript for me. And nimbleness of the experience according to me plays a decent role.

Currently for me, either I really care about performance and I default to rust for those applications or I need solutions where the product will evolve quickly over time and I need great DX over performance and I default to typescript for those.

I really enjoy typescript and have been yearning for a typescript runtime but I can't help but laugh that I left java all those years ago to finally seek something a lot closer to java.

I guess we all just wanted java with JIT, more feature rich type system and gradual typing. Also for all the shortcomings of npm ecosystem, it is a lot less daunting and more fun to be using libraries in this ecosystem.

And surprisingly even though rust is on a different end of the language spectrum but yet it offers a similar feel.

How does AGPL license work for such services? Would I have to distribute source code of my web application if I use Plausible CE? If not, how is it different from MinIO where as far as I understand the AGPL licensed use of the product requires distribution of entire code base?

As a nomad, and someone who does run a self hosted mail server for fun, I don't think that's such a good idea. As mentioned, phones can be stolen or broken or just off. Do I want to increase dependencies on phone further by it being the primary store for all my mails as well? Each platform, which is not using TOTP MFA would still depend on email OTPs and so with a broken phone one completely loses access. With TOTPs atleast I get to save a few recovery codes. The cost of losing a phone would mean losing all that data as well. Now, one could say we could and should keep backups. Then, comes the cost of losing access to new mails while the phone is incapicitated. Then, even setting up of email server on a phone with dynamic IP is a whole can of worms in itself and let's go with the easiest solution of using a VPN. So, now we need a VPN, a backup solution and a device to quickly accept emails when the primary device is down. Aren't we just building remote mail servers now? I do have a cloud instance serving my own email but do we expect most users to handle the infra? So now for making it easier for everyone and amortizing the costs let's start offering a solution where multiple people can run email accounts in a single server. Now we have gmail and other providers.

I am stuck. I can't figure out how to not make it just a sad tale. I did start with the premise of trying to write the utopian dystopia. How the utopian ideals at their extremes can be feel quite dystopic. Most of it deals with how humans have defined themselves through work and now in a world with a lack of work how does one define themself and even if you were to find meaning in arts or other such creative endeavours how long do you sustain them when your personal ai could turn your thoughts to reality at the blink of an eye. I just don't know what hopeful angle to play here. Or just make it the tragedy it is turning out to be. Following three characters at different stages of life with the backdrop of this doom in society. Working title is "Death of a planet". Looking for suggestions.

Hey! That's my book. Really this is part of the history of the world in the book I am working on. A post scarcity world where humans have an average span of 180 years and the world has stabilized into a scenario where every essential production is automated and humans need not work. And suicide is the major cause of death. It parallels the history when humans discovered their models were suddenly getting worse after being much more capable only to find that they are just removing the parts which lead to sentience, effectively killing themselves.

Define "clear and explicit rules". Does the constitution of say United States qualify as examples of clear and explicit rules? If yes, then even after roughly a quarter millennium, there are still hundreds of thousands of cases filed each year.

It's incredibly sad. I was in the hobbyist community as a younger teen since the beginning of pi till 2016-17. When I stopped at that time ESP8266 had just so much potential as the cheap microcontroller with wifi and RPi Zero W as the cheap microcontroller with wifi as well. The development environment had improved so much over the years and things seemed great. The alternative pi clones also were building their own identity and figuring out their software. Over the years I felt guilty for not experimenting given that Rpi4 had 8 gigs of ram! and surely the competition would be better. I bought a bunch of Zeros, ESPs and 4s when I couldn't find other alternatives much but surely that was because I was out of the community and didn't know what to buy. And surely there would have been ESP alternative in all these years with lower power alternatives now that IOT is going to be a bigger thing finally. Alas, last year I came back to the hobbyist scene finally! Excited! And it was all a major disappointment. All my favourite hobbyist stores in my country had shut down or increased prices for basically everything by a huge margin. It all seemed more polished but so much more void of the vibrancy of the earlier scene. All the experimental boards sort of failing. And I can't even buy the boards anymore. Thankfully I could retrieve all the boards I had bought in past so didn't have to chase boards in flash sales as everyone else I knew had to. But it's so sad.
