harry_ord··on Computer Security Is a Political Struggle
I was agreeing with you. I found the statement that 'the political systems of Europe' so vague it couldn't be true. It's why I listed several different definitions of Europe.
harry_ord··on I was a 20-something dethroned dotcom ceo that went to work at mcdonald's (2000)
Yeah I see it all the time on buses where you exit by the front door.
harry_ord··on Computer Security Is a Political Struggle
The statement is so vague it can't be true anyway. What's Europe? The continent, the EU or one of the organisations that EU membership often come with?
harry_ord··on "We ran out of columns"
Admittedly I've somehow only worked in perl but the worst code I tried for fix felt similar. They know about arrays but every map and grep used perks default $_ and there was enough nesting the function was near 1k lines if I remember right.
harry_ord··on Parasites are everywhere. Why do so few researchers study them?
I think Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria rather than parasite (I always assumed the two are different)
harry_ord··on More delays for Euston's HS2 station
What parts are you talking about? Most areas in the m25 is part of a London Borough. Watford isn't but has decent rail connections and has tfl bus routes ending there.

There are some parts of rural Enfield and Barnet which aren't so great for public transport connections admittedly.

harry_ord··on More delays for Euston's HS2 station
What you're describing isn't a war on drivers just poor infrastructure and bad decisions. For all these issues no alternatives have been made no ones benefiting.
harry_ord··on NASA's Curiosity rover discovers a surprise in a Martian rock
I was hoping for japanium.
harry_ord··on A reawakening of systems programming meetups
Been ages for me. Only London one I attended was the perl mongers meet ups but those were drinking based.
harry_ord··on What Happened to Perl 7? (2022)
I wrote a few things in raku. Pretty nice compared to perl and inline perl5 was a nice way to get a lot of easy functionality
harry_ord··on Ask HN: Who Wants a Penpal?
My experience was with gamefaqs. The regional boards, where I lived was small enough for one but had a lot of active users. Made quite a few friends and it helped me get my first provisional job
harry_ord··on Tokyo's Government Is Building Its Own Dating App to Combat Falling Birthrates
It should be fine, everything I've seen write about it seems to say it's like a cliff or steep descent rather than a gentle decline.
harry_ord··on Tokyo's Government Is Building Its Own Dating App to Combat Falling Birthrates
We had children of men which I guess is a dramatisation of what is happening
harry_ord··on Mediocre Engineer's Guide to HTTPS
True, I thought of those as they're just more informative about why you're not getting what you're looking for.
harry_ord··on Mediocre Engineer's Guide to HTTPS
Not a network person, only played with trace route a long time ago but I'm pretty sure that only really happens if you explicitly ask for information about all the middle men.

Most of the time a lot of software kinda doesn't care about what's happening just if it can do what it's told.

For Websites you often get more informative errors like 404, 500 or something else.

harry_ord··on Crows "count" the number of self-generated vocalizations
I don't have it to hand but they're able to trade and are wise enough to avoid people who cheat them. Either them or family member kinda trains/works with wolves as well.

It probably is why crows and ravens get that treatment. Not sure if they're not that fussy about food though, media/literature always makes them seem like vulture like scavenge

harry_ord··on UK General Election called for July 4th
I think the pm changing is a new government in the legal sense or whatever since they have to go to the head of state saying they have the confidence of Parliament to form a government. There has only been 3 governments since 2019. The past 10 years have been a bit chaotic in UK standards. 2004-2014 had three different prime ministers with like 2 or more elections (I don't remember when the second Labour one was)
harry_ord··on UK General Election called for July 4th
Seems weirder since the previous 2(Johnson and Truss) governments were due to avoidable errors.
harry_ord··on UK General Election called for July 4th
Often done when winds are more in your favor. Some of the internet buzz put it down to the decrease in inflation.

A general reason for doing it is the government isn't really working or passing many laws and some things they want to do seem to be questionable in their effectiveness

harry_ord··on Show HN: Pls Fix – Hire big tech employees to appeal account suspensions
Going by the title I was hoping this was about the choice these companies have made to maze like appeals and support service. This solution solution to the problem is kinda cursed
harry_ord··on This USB flash drive can only store 8KB of data, but will last you 200 years
Apart from written down/printed well is there any other really reliable long term storage?
harry_ord··on Big Tech to EU: "Drop Dead"
Career ending for who? People barely know who works in the EU apart from the council president
harry_ord··on Wasp-193B, a giant planet with a density similar to that of cotton candy
A project for future odd ball people/groups
harry_ord··on Cost of Living Index by Country 2024 – Numbeo
I think just by country messes up some of the measures for some countries and cities. I paid half of £720 to rent a former family home in Nottingham while a friend paid over £1000 in Nottingham.

Not my experience but I think Amsterdam also has extremely high rents but I'm not sure how it compares to the rest of the Netherlands.

harry_ord··on Coronal mass ejection impact imminent, two more earth-directed CMEs
High water tinned foods will help a lot.
harry_ord··on North Yorkshire Council to phase out apostrophe use on street signs
Not really a problem but some buses and digital displays where I live in Austria skip umlauts and just use the 26 letter spelling ae rather than ä or strasse rather than Straße.
harry_ord··on Are Japanese anime robots isometric or allometric?
And gave us the infantitly large scope dog in games
harry_ord··on Are Japanese anime robots isometric or allometric?
I always felt like the big explosion was the 80s, not to say the 70s was unremarkable and the 90s just had a lot of really good stuff like turn A, Eva (I dislike it) and King of braves GGG
harry_ord··on The Great Migration from MongoDB to PostgreSQL
I work with the aftermath of going from postgres to couchdb. The migration was done years before I joined. There are still customer records showing postgres ids.

It didn't seem like it made things better since there were issues with dates and lost data. Working with it now isn't fun either.

harry_ord··on Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia will be completed in 2026
The cold thing was the biggest surprise when I was in Barcelona one November
