harry_ord··on How to protect your phone and data privacy at the US border
Yes but not all of them, no need to drag every person into this.
harry_ord··on The good times in tech are over
Yeah, I worked for relatively normal companies as a dev from 2013 to now most of the benefits were normal across the company apart from choice of machine and I guess going to a conference but my current employer doesn't offer that.
harry_ord··on 40% of Britons haven't read a single book in the last 12 months
What counts as a book? The survey gives the impression it's just reading for pleasure?

This probably plays into the class divide, my wife hates reading (for pleasure) she says that comes from having to read a lot at work. I imagine a lot of people read quite a bit but maybe have less interest in reading in their free time for entertainment.

harry_ord··on Revolt: Open-Source Alternative to Discord
The bigger question mark for me is. Is this still at risk from the online safety act that seems to be killing lots of smaller UK communities/games?
harry_ord··on Urban Dead is shutting down
The tie in with deadset(TV show) was neat as well.
harry_ord··on Ask HN: What less-popular systems programming language are you using?
Perl is kinda less popular now. I use that at work. Used to write perl6/raku in my previous job, I loved the grammars made a nice way to try and Wirte an nginx configuration manager.
harry_ord··on Half My Life with Perl
Nice similar age, I got into it as my first job after university and every job since
harry_ord··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2024)
Is the remote status here up to date? The job descriptions say you do not accommodate remote work.
harry_ord··on How Japanese black companies oppress workers (2014)
Long ones can be a deal breaker though. It was for me when I was looking for a new job before. It's similar to being willing to relocate imo.
harry_ord··on How Japanese Black Companies Oppress Workers and Ruin Lives[2014]
The notice period is kinda odd. I've known people who want to leave immediately and haven't had a lot of trouble doing so because the relationship with their employer has soured that much.

Paid by the doctor? I think sick pay comes from the employer initially and later statutory sick pay(state).

harry_ord··on Post-postal: What did we lose when we stopped writing letters?
Used to write quite a few letters, used to draft then rewrite them using a nice pen and good ink. I miss doing it, very short on the time to write them now. I also found out I lost a lot of letters a last year while moving which was heartbreaking
harry_ord··on Why birds do not fall while sleeping
Breathing is also a conscious action for them if I remember right
harry_ord··on The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2024
Are you asking why? Because you give an answer to your own question and what should he receive a prize in exactly?
harry_ord··on Most gamers prefer single-player games
A lot more games are structured that way.

I got into online gaming with Cs 1.6 and cs:cz normal online was kinda competitive but you had a lot of joke maps or non competive ones(climbing maps). I don't think they're as popular now since a lot of games have matchmaking and ranked unlocks as the default multilayer. I'm way out of the loop mind you, I learn a lot more to PvE multilayer now(left4dead and deep rock)

harry_ord··on London saw a surprising benefit to ultra-low emissions zone: More active kids
Yeah, that and a lot seem kinda small while being a bit lower than the prices of some houses(but still too much imo). Been a long time since I dreamed of home ownership admittedly.

I thought grenfell pushed the leaseholder vs freehold pricing out in the open. I've seen stuff about leaseholders effectively in negative equity because of the cost of cladding and a previous government dropped a bill or amendment changing who had to pay for such things or the existence of leasehold.

harry_ord··on Ask HN: Sci-fi recommendations by non-western authors?
Not sure if they count but the novelisation of Mobile suit Gundam https://www.amazon.com/Mobile-Suit-Gundam-Escalation-Confron...

Yukikaze and Good luck Yukikaze by Chōhei Kambayashi it ends on a cliffhanger though since the later books did not get translated. https://www.amazon.com/Yukikaze-Chohei-Kambayashi/dp/1421532...

harry_ord··on London saw a surprising benefit to ultra-low emissions zone: More active kids
A lot of older council apartments in the UK seem to be a bit grim. There's some skepticism against apartment blocks and a lot of newer ones seem to have odd pricing.

I live in a nice apartment in Austria but I'd be a lot more critical looking for one to live in the UK.

harry_ord··on London saw a surprising benefit to ultra-low emissions zone: More active kids
Congestion charge and parking availability would have already frozen out most lower owners driving into Central London (zone 1 and 2). What does rent stabilised mean here? Not a phrase I've ever heard regarding council housing in the UK.
harry_ord··on The Podcast Index
I mainly listen to audio dramas. I find reddit the best place to get recs either that or I give advertised podcasts in ones I'm listening to a try.
harry_ord··on 1913: When Hitler, Trotsky, Tito, Freud and Stalin all lived in the same place
Tafelspitz is waste of good altweiner backfleisch.

I quite like the Sache Torte in the place I live. More importantly though it's coming up to Krapfen season.

harry_ord··on Why Not Comments
I find the why and what are so useful. If I know why what the code is aiming to achieve, it makes rewriting it or fixing a bug much easier
harry_ord··on Creating a Git Commit: The Hard Way
Cherrypick (-p) is wonderful. A command I also like is rebase interactive(-I)

Git rebase -i HEAD~[number of commits]

harry_ord··on Parkinson's may begin in the gut, study says, adding to growing evidence
At least the mix from eating uncooked fruit makes it harder.
harry_ord··on Flight engineer reveals what it was like to operate Concorde
Admittedly I was only thinking in the direct sense. Saving european manufacturing is way outside my area of knowledge.
harry_ord··on Flight engineer reveals what it was like to operate Concorde
UK and France seemed to have a few engineering projects like this(cool but not economical), I've seen the channel tunnel described slightly similar.
harry_ord··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
A lot of teal aand turquoise. Only saw blue at the start and green once.
harry_ord··on Ask HN: Subscription Service Without Accounts?
Closest would be mullvad without looking at how kagi works. Still an account but no strong identifying data is needed by the user
harry_ord··on Sleep on it: How the brain processes many experiences, even when 'offline'
I think there's a medical difference between unconscious and sleeping. At least I don't think being forced unconscious by something (a bonk on the head) is like sleeping
harry_ord··on A dishwasher can make or break a restaurant (2017)
Uks a bit odd since Service charge is a thing as well and sometimes it's always added (at bill calculation) and other places only add it when it's a large group.
harry_ord··on A dishwasher can make or break a restaurant (2017)
I feel tipping is still very common in Austria as well. Wife gives me a hard time when I don't tip a lot or at all but they're still very cash only here.
