happyscrappy··on Study: Some car models consuming around 50% more fuel than official results
Actually the VWs that were emitting 40x pollution in the US were only 10x of the Euro regs.
happyscrappy··on Study: Some car models consuming around 50% more fuel than official results
Hmm. I think you are right, the caption and graphic conflict a bit.
happyscrappy··on Study: Some car models consuming around 50% more fuel than official results
GM claimed less improvement(aka cheated less), so your comment is wrong.

Edit: Apparently I am wrong.

happyscrappy··on Study: Some car models consuming around 50% more fuel than official results
From the third paragraph of your article:

>Mercedes cars have the biggest average gap between test and real-world performance, with real-world fuel consumption exceeding test results by nearly half.

happyscrappy··on Study: Some car models consuming around 50% more fuel than official results
European emission rules are lax compared to American ones so it may well be dirtier but legal.
happyscrappy··on Study: Some car models consuming around 50% more fuel than official results
The reason air pollution is so much worse in European cities than American ones is largely due to diesel passenger vehicles.
happyscrappy··on Study: Some car models consuming around 50% more fuel than official results
Europe was really led astray when they were told that diesels were better for the environment, hybrids would have been the way to go.
happyscrappy··on Links between coffee and health
Erdos was on serious high test, Benzedrine. He quit for a while but said his math suffered too much.
happyscrappy··on Apple’s approach to privacy
The US does not worry about Europe because for all their strut and bellow concrete action is nonexistent.

>demand references and a CV

That would not be HN and would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I would imagine most users have used a throwaway acct to make some comment without being brutalized, and some of the best comments come from new users.

>I don't plan to be very involved--other than as an enthusiastic user (who would, however, prefer that it be easier to read on a phone)

I always assumed not having a mobile style sheet was intentional to slow down eternal September, but if sama is asking for it then that can't be the case, right?

happyscrappy··on Latest Snowden Doc Shows NSA Spied on German Intelligence
This story doesn't work to berate the US so move the goalposts. Maybe submit a story you have?
happyscrappy··on Latest Snowden Doc Shows NSA Spied on German Intelligence
>gave journalists the responsibility to publish relevant documents appropriately

Journalists will be tempted to publish regardless of the original intent, let's hope they are not desperate for a story.

happyscrappy··on Latest Snowden Doc Shows NSA Spied on German Intelligence
What is Germany supposed to do, align with Russia? They really don't have any choice.
happyscrappy··on The Case of Richard Glossip
Fine edited to outrage. Your goal is to paint the US as similar to those countries but the fact is it is up to the states. Here are the states with no death penalty:

Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, District of Columbia

happyscrappy··on The Case of Richard Glossip
The only impediment to the repeal of the death penalty is the will of the American voters, so that is where you should direct your outrage.
happyscrappy··on The Case of Richard Glossip
The death penalty is to the left what partial birth abortion is to the right. When groups are making emotional pleas to push their agenda then you know you are being played.
happyscrappy··on EPA opposed DMCA exemptions that could have revealed Volkswagen fraud
The article tries to shoehorn its issue onto what is clearly corporate greed and an absolutely stunning lack of judgement. Would this cheat have been found through the code? Who knows maybe, but the fact that VW went ahead knowing their numbers were fake is unforgivable and almost unbelievable. It would eventually come out.
happyscrappy··on From Radio to Porn, British Spies Track Web Users’ Online Identities
Well if the threat is actually that severe maybe you shouldn't rule out physical violence? And who will enforce this oppression, the cops so we should hate them. And who will finance this future crime, the banks so we should hate anyone that works there, even the tellers. Embrace or deflect, no good comes from hate.
happyscrappy··on Volkswagen rigged tests on 2.8M cars in Germany, Berlin says
>I see a lot of people posting things to the effect of "It's probably not a huge deal, just a firmware patch."

Yeah if it were just a firmware patch VW would not have set aside billions to deal with the fallout and had the CEO resign.

happyscrappy··on Volkswagen rigged tests on 2.8M cars in Germany, Berlin says
This can't really be called a bug because they did it on purpose, but what are the most costly software 'issues' in history? As VW set aside 6 billion for damages I assume this is the worst.
happyscrappy··on Volkswagen rigged tests on 2.8M cars in Germany, Berlin says
There will be a criminal case for fraud and a civil case for customer damages, at least that is how it works in the US. How many countries were defrauded and all their different laws will take quite a while to sort.
happyscrappy··on Volkswagen rigged tests on 2.8M cars in Germany, Berlin says
Does this mean these cars will be recalled or will the environmental laws be weakened to make them road legal?
happyscrappy··on Car industry 'buried report revealing US car safety flaws over fears for TTIP'
EU cars will be recalled all over the globe for cheating, there are no US recalls because they did not cheat. The EU cars violate EU regulations by cheating. It should be fun for them as it appears to be industry wide and state sanctioned. Maybe they can raise their pollution limits enough that they are not recalled in the EU.
happyscrappy··on Car industry 'buried report revealing US car safety flaws over fears for TTIP'
The cheating EU cars are emitting 40x the pollution which is why air quality in Europe sucks.
happyscrappy··on The prisoners fighting wildfires in California
And which state is not broken and defective?
happyscrappy··on The Drug-Violence Myth
Legalizing drugs would reduce gang violence to almost zero, but whether or not drugs are bad is orthogonal to the argument. I lost a good friend to alcohol and have relatives struggling with heroin. Just for the record I cannot believe the huge comeback heroin is making, I just don't understand. Some kind of affluenza and believing the stupid media telling them that the world is shit. I am in favor of virtually anything that reduces suffering in the aggregate.
happyscrappy··on Crystal, iOS ad blocker, to accept money to let ads through
I am guessing that he is the type that says "Apple is an evil corporation, that is why I buy Samsung". People get confused.
happyscrappy··on The Drug-Violence Myth
Crack is much more addictive, and most of the people buying crack are white.
happyscrappy··on The Drug-Violence Myth
I detected a hint of "the cop is the perp and the perp is the victim" in your other post but wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt. This kind of attitude is quickly disabused of when living in a poor neighborhood. Why are gang members practically suicidal? Drugs play a part, but they are not protecting their neighborhood they are trying to get a larger territory to deal drugs. As for the US going into the Middle East, it was probably a bad idea but then people turn around and complain we are not doing anything in Syria.
