handelaar··on Guide to running Llama 2 locally
Idiot question: if I have access to sentence-by-sentence professionally-translated text of foreign-language-to-English in gigantic quantities, and I fed the originals as prompts and the translations as completions...

... would I be likely to get anything useful if I then fed it new prompts in a similar style? Or would it just generate gibberish?

handelaar··on What is the minimal possible UK address?
That particular hotel is some distance outside Las Vegas, too, in Paradise NV
handelaar··on Stripe is wrongly suspending accounts
Omnipay does not support Stripe SCA and is basically abandonware.
handelaar··on Show HN: Tracking my local bus with a RaspberryPi
Not very surprising to me that they'd start bunching by Bethnal Green tube having all just been slogging their way through Mare Street in Hackney, honestly
handelaar··on Meta to sell Giphy after UK watchdog confirms ruling
Someone's clearly not familiar with the UK government's approach to jobs and the economy
handelaar··on Yagni Exceptions (2021)
Fully in-use in Scotland and Ireland
handelaar··on The City of London’s oldest document is currently on public display
Residents do not have a vote in local elections, is the part you're missing.
handelaar··on Show HN: Wavvy – web-based audio editor (Audacity port)
Sounds a lot more like playing 44.1kHz audio through a 48kHz device
handelaar··on The EU Commission accepts high error rates when checking chats
It is EU law that will prevent the Commission from actually getting anywhere near implementing a project this stupid and insanely-illegal.

Over in the UK, the EU can't stop the new Kakistocracy from actually doing it. I know where I'd rather live.

handelaar··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
Being honest it's not a massive amount of loss if your entire supply is coming from the grid. But if you're generating and storing energy at home, then it's much more significant because you add the transformer's losses to the additional losses spent in your inverter.
handelaar··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
(Sorry, replying to myself but by way of example I recently discovered that "old"-style UK plugs -- BS546 ones -- are still rated for DC domestic supply. So in at least one or two corners of the world this whole notion is already supported with a semi-familiar interface.)
handelaar··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
Yes, it causes issues today. But tomorrow, I'm expecting that the transformer will be outside the device (as now with wall warts and most laptops) rather than inside (as with your TV). And that minority who are handy enough with tools can patch past the internal transformer with a soldering iron and a screwdriver in the meantime.
handelaar··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
DC home electricity. If your future home has solar and local storage, and your domestic usage is mostly in appliances which convert back down to DC immediately behind the plug socket (most of us have this) then at some point we're going to start wanting to power our homes like houseboats or camper vans.

Yes, this won't help for (eg) appliances with heating elements, I'm probably talking about a second discrete wiring loop rather than a total replacement, and it's hard right now to find a TV with the DC transformer on the outside.

But it'd be quite a lot more efficient for almost everything else most of us do. Look around the room you're in now and count how many things use more than 19V DC internally. Where I'm sitting right now, it's None.

handelaar··on Linode EU-West (London) is offline
Surprising to me, since in the last more-than-ten years I think this is the first time it's happened
handelaar··on Epic Games acquires Bandcamp
Look at this sideways for a second and you'll see that you just described precisely and exactly the structure and supposed-mission of every performing rights society in the world.

And yet they just don't seem to have any interest in it.

handelaar··on The U.S. is now energy independent
I wonder if there might be some reason for that sudden 15-year low in oil consumption in 2020.

It's a mystery, for sure.

handelaar··on Apple Helps Asahi Linux
No. Singular nouns require singular verbs, in both countries.
handelaar··on Apple Helps Asahi Linux
No, they would not. Don't mistake erroneous colloquial speech for what's "correct" in written English. This is wrong, and so is the original example.
handelaar··on Apple Helps Asahi Linux
As someone who has worked as a sub (copy-editor) in the UK for many years in the past I cannot begin to describe exactly how completely incorrect this is.
handelaar··on FTC sues to block Nvidia-Arm merger
I would imagine that Apple (which put money into Acorn and ARM JVs over thirty years ago and I think was the first third-party company to do so, by a very wide margin) has a much older license than anybody else.
handelaar··on Pumps run dry at gas stations in Britain
...the same non-UK-based drivers that it proposes to kick out of the country again on December 24th. And the same drivers that last year on December 24th it corralled onto a disused airport runway behind fences and locked the doors so they couldn't go anywhere while being kicked out of the country.

Hard to imagine why they might not be jumping at the chance to spend another Xmas with no access to sanitation or even food in a place that is run by people who abuse them publicly every day

handelaar··on The last days of Silicon Roundabout
Old Street roundabout is 620 yards away from the City of London boundary
handelaar··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
I think in fairness that when "interesting and unexpected material surfacer" is merely a euphemism for "we didn't bother indexing the things you might actually be looking for", a degree of scepticism isn't unwarranted.

(Source: I looked up several Irish politicians because I run an all-text website containing every single word that they say in parliament. I got nothing of use, or even of interest, for anything.)

handelaar··on On YouTube’s recommendation system
That's a lot of text just to bury the question "why does Youtube never ever stop shoving literal Nazis onto my front page all the time?" a thousand words down and then... not answer it.
handelaar··on Project includes a dependancy that has a license that forbids its use
"On a lark" is something I (a native English speaker, from London, which is in England, after which the language is named) have never heard or seen written -- anywhere -- before your ill-considered and wholly-incorrect posts on this thread.

Shush.

handelaar··on How Sweden became the Silicon Valley of Europe
FB and Google have enormous buildings in central Dublin. AWS runs a very large facilities and developer group. Apple has a headcount of about 4000 people in Cork in a facility that's been there for nearly 40 years.

They're here because of tax, yes, and Ireland is in no meaningful way a leading startup centre. But Dublin in particular has more people working in software than (say) London.

handelaar··on Craig Murray will surrender himself for prison
The laws have been in place for decades and have at no point not been in full effect. The reason nobody's been prosecuted and convicted for 70 years is that nobody with half a brain commits the offence.
handelaar··on Who Owns My Name?
"Rehabilitation" usually comes after an appropriate criminal punishment being issued and received, not before. That reasonable people think that getting just twelve weeks in jail for his crimes -- which he at no point admitted -- is an offensive undersentencing in no way justifies their description as a "mob".
handelaar··on Haiku Beta 3
Why, when it basically apparently doesn't run on laptops, and when it fails to start it provides no hint whatsoever about what to do next, is there no information about what to do next anywhere on the Haiku web site? Why, if your position is that there's a list of hardware (a very well-hidden one, I might add) on which I should be running this, is that list not front-and-centre so I don't waste my time trying to boot it on anything else?

Why, to put it more briefly, does Haiku insist on being treated as a serious operating system when it simultaneously clearly runs on less stuff than most other OSes and yet requires us to pretend that it's in the same class as those other OSes?

(This doesn't happen with ReactOS. But then they don't have the social disability of resolutely insisting that we all pay attention to them as a Very Important Thing.)

[edit: I forgot the big one: after over eleven years would it kill them to at least once spit out a fucking error message? Or is the total lack of information with which a person could file a useful bug report in fact the intent?]

handelaar··on Haiku Beta 3
It's never once started on anything I own. For over a decade. The most voted-on item in its bug tracker has 9 votes on it.

RiscOS (which was a wilfully-obtuse comparison on my part, but since you're digging in [edit: in fact, creating an account on HN for no reason except to promote it on this thread], I'll run with it for your benefit) has without question already actually run on a number of devices -- though granted, not types of devices -- at least one or two orders of magnitude larger than this thing ever will, at the rate it's going.
