haltingproblem··on Grammarly rebrands to 'Superhuman,' launches a new AI assistant
"Grammarly announced Tuesday the acquisition of email client Superhuman in a push to build out its AI for its productivity suite. Neither companies provided details about the financial terms of the deal..... Superhuman was founded by Rahul Vohra, Vivek Sodera, and Conrad Irwin. The company raised more than $114 million in funding from backers including a16z, IVP, and Tiger Global, with its last valuation at $825 million, according to data from venture data analytics firm Traxcn." [1]

Interested to understand what would be the terms of the deal if Superhuman was valued at $825mm and what the founders cleared if the all the VCs rounds had 2-3x liquidation preferences.

haltingproblem··on The Queens' Daughters: State Mandated Prostitution in British India
India was never Majority muslim, perhaps you mean Muslim ruled, then partially correct - a good swath of India was ruled by the Mughal empire but there were independent states which made pacts with the British or fell to them in battles.

If you read the conclusion the authors point this out and address it. They argue against reaching a causal conclusion but given the magnitude of difference ask for more study.

Your approach argues for outright dismissal without any analysis or alignment with other factors.

Law of Conservation of Shadiness ~ A company does not get less shady over time, just shifts the shadiness to a different set of stakeholders.
haltingproblem··on Inferring the Phylogeny of Large Language Models
It might be because detecting if output is AI generated and mapping output which is known to be from an LLM to a specific LLM or class of LLMs are different problems.

haltingproblem··on When AI thinks it will lose, it sometimes cheats, study finds
There is a whole lot of anthropomorphisation going on here. The LLM is not thinking it should cheat and then going on to cheat! How much of this is just BFS and it deploying past strategies it has seen vs. actually a \em {premediated} act of cheating?

Some might argue that BFS is how humans operate and AI luminaries like Herb Simon argued that Chess playing machines like Deep Thought and Deep Blue were "intelligent".

I find it specious and dangerous click-baiting by both the scientists and authors.

haltingproblem··on China Rescues Stranded Lunar Satellites
Incredible feat. Some of the orbital diagrams were shared on a handle on X[1]. I would love to understand how they came up with this - was this done by humans perfecting it by trial and error or they wrote an optimization program.

haltingproblem··on The Houthis' Moneymaking Machine
"Houthi attacks added at least $175bn to shipping costs in the ten months to October 2024. The entire global container market was worth around $122bn in the same period in 2023. Higher prices for shipping oil and gas, as well as dry bulks like wheat, make the overall bill probably bigger still. For now, shipowners are raking in profits as longer transit times soak up capacity. Maersk, a Danish shipper, reported $3.3bn in operating profit in the third quarter, up from $0.5bn a year before."

Houthi piracy is more profitable for shipping companies! Law of unintended consequences.

I am so sorry to hear what happened to your Mom. This is a slap on the wrist to those who suffered and to those who loved them.

How do companies like McKinsey get away with this?

haltingproblem··on Bhutan, after prioritizing happiness, now faces an existential crisis
Southern Bhutan’s Lhotshampa people, who were 100,000 mostly Hindu ethnic minority were cleansed under the “One Nation, One People” policy aimed at forced ethnic, cultural, and religious cohesion. They now live as refugees in Nepal.

Behind Bhutan's Shangrila facade is a discriminatory policies favoring Buddhists & Drukpa culture remain in place as do discriminatory citizenship laws and restrictions on civil, religious and linguistic rights.

haltingproblem··on Coffee helped the Union in the Civil War
Underrated comment.

Perhaps Mormons have in their belief system a strong motivating stimulant? I am trying to avoid use of the word drug here as it is pejorative. Perhaps, Coffee is just what we need to overcome the ennui and pointless of modern existence and a set of religious (or cultural) beliefs helps us do the same.

This would also imply that Caffeine consumption is lower in societies that are religious and have strong belief systems - religious or cultural, which can be tested!

Insanity that some of these institutions cannot figure out their data. We are talking tabular data in the tens of millions to hundreds of millions annually.

All the data generated by these institutions in a year is dwarfed by what Google or Meta takes in a day. A colossal failure of institutional capacity. Banking is a purely information processing business around tabluar structured data most of whose structure dates back decades.

haltingproblem··on Best Wearables for Sleep: Scientific Rankings [video]
Yep, the performance of the Apple watch is nothing but stunning especially given their medical grade ECGfeature. The (lack) progress of the others is disappointed.

The Oura3 numbers are pretty impressive and at 3-5 days of battery life gives it an edge over the Apple Watch. I prefer ambient devices that lack screens so it is pretty good in that sense too.

haltingproblem··on The uninsurable world: what climate change is costing homeowners
The visualization is beautiful but it leaves two things to help really get a scale for if storms are really increasing (in frequency and severity):

- leaves out many storms especially in the third world

- does not divide by the totally insured property base which should be going over time.

I wonder if adding that will change things?

haltingproblem··on Sal Khan, Serial Education Revolutionary
Yes, Sal Khan's original idea did not materialize but as per these stats hundreds of millions of people have used Khan Academy [1].

The author says: "“Hey Sal, why should we trust your new TED Talk, when your last one turned out to be a litany of pretty delusions and optimistic fables?”"

This is an excessively harsh take on someone whose work has benefitted millions of motivated learners especially in the developing world.
