halgir··on Show HN: GPT-4 Reverse Turing Test
> Emergent is just a way for an atheist to cover up that they have no idea.

We don't. I don't think many try to cover that up.

Emergence just means that a system has properties not apparent from the parts going into it. It's not a tool to handwave away that fact and ascribe it to "emergent hocus pocus", it's a tool to frame the search for why that happens.

halgir··on Ask HN: Tips for a new team lead who is hiring
That's a good point. Juniors are valuable, but only if there is sufficient scaffolding for them to grow and be led towards the most valuable work. Otherwise you're doing everyone a disservice.
halgir··on Tim Cook bets on Apple’s mixed-reality headset to secure his legacy
Do you use it regularly? If so, have you just accepted the motion sickness as a cost of doing business (and/or gaming)?
halgir··on Tim Cook bets on Apple’s mixed-reality headset to secure his legacy
Anecdotally, raw performance helps a lot. I tried the old Oculus dev kit almost 10 years ago, and it left me unbalanced, nauseated, and generally feeling sick for the rest of that day. Now I regularly use my Quest 2 with zero ill effect. The nausea kicks in immediately without tracking in stationary mode, though.
halgir··on The Surprisingly Scientific Roots of Monkey Bars
Thank you! At the end of the day, you have to raise your children in a way that's comfortable to you. Even if there were a scientifically "correct" template for raising every child, your own discomfort will shine through if it just doesn't work for you personally, and they'll pick up on that.

I take comfort in knowing that humans have been raising humans for a million years, and it usually works out alright. That must mean our own instincts are mostly good enough.

Also want to point out what another commenter mentioned; technically anything that can break a bone can do more damage than that.

halgir··on The Surprisingly Scientific Roots of Monkey Bars
You're right, and every situation has nuance we can only intuit. Ultimately, I believe active play is important for his well-being, just like it's important that I take him places even if that involves a potentially lethal bicycle ride next to car traffic.

Of course, if anything terrible were ever to happen, I'll probably beat myself up over it and be certain I took too many unnecessary risks. Those are the odds we play for ourselves and our loved ones every day.

halgir··on The Surprisingly Scientific Roots of Monkey Bars
I prefer for him to not break bones. If an activity is 50% likely to involve bone-breaking, I'll step in. But if that really is the worst that could happen, and is unlikely to do so, then I'll try not to.
halgir··on The Surprisingly Scientific Roots of Monkey Bars
When I get nervous from what my kid is doing and feel an urge to tell him to stop, I try to ask myself "what's the worst that could happen". If the answer is "break a bone", I try to stop myself from saying anything. Though I'll still subtly maneuver myself into catching position.
halgir··on TikTok banned on EU executive staff devices
Many work devices are also personal devices. I have an employer-issued phone, and my income tax interprets that as a "benefit". I could avoid that by claiming I don't use it for personal reasons, and instead buy my own separate device. But I don't.
halgir··on Tell HN: Confluent laying off 8% of staff
When the playbook has become a meme, I think there's a case to be made for updating it.
halgir··on Tell HN: Confluent laying off 8% of staff
The problem isn't that CEOs don't get punished. The problem is when they virtue signal with "I'm sowwy " and claim responsibility without accepting accountability.
halgir··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
> I might just start subscription hopping for a while.

Aren't you worried about how this will look on your resume?

halgir··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
The only reason music streaming is so cheap is because it's a commodity. There's several multi-billion dollar corporations all competing with largely identical products. There's not much else than price to compete on.

Video services compete on exclusive content, so they can make subjective value considerations around how valuable certain content is to certain groups.

halgir··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
I think just dropping the free accountability statement would help. It's not so much the lack of responsibility, it's the accompanying false humility that annoys people.

Or even better, back your words with actions. Like the Nintendo executive team did a decade ago.

You're right. Though checking their synonym guide [1], there is this:

> accountable suggests imminence of retribution for unfulfilled trust or violated obligation.

> Video > audio

I get what you mean, but I wouldn't accept that as a universal truth. I spend considerably more time listening to music on Spotify than I do watching video on Netflix. The content I consume on Netflix may have cost more to produce, but the content I consume on Spotify gives me subjectively more value.

halgir··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
The actual statement by Ek contains: "I take full accountability for the moves that got us here today."

Interestingly, responsibility is usually used as a get-out-of-jail-free phrase, while accountability literally means that you will take consequences. Maybe I'm just reading too much into the literal meaning of otherwise similar words.

halgir··on “Copycat” layoffs won’t help tech companies or their employees
> Of course pay cuts always ignore shareholders as they are really getting the benefit of paying less for same number of people.

Perhaps this could be mitigated by equity-based compensation equal to the amount reduced in salary. It won't make up for the lost cash, especially if the company is in a place where it needs to take such measures, but it would give more meaning to the "in it together" message.

halgir··on You don't need live chat on your website
Does that actually benefit you though? Is it more efficient for you to wade through a chatbot or wait for a human to respond rather than read the documentation?
halgir··on You don't need live chat on your website
When I need live chat support, it's because I've already exhausted the help center and can't find my answer elsewhere. I really do need to speak with a human.

Fortunately, many chatbots in my experience will indeed switch over to human support if I write "I want to speak with a human". I'm glad they take that into account.

halgir··on Peto’s Paradox
Sounds like a feature, not a bug. Unqualified speculation incoming, but I suspect that lifespans for different species approach the optimal replacement cadence for maximum fitness.
halgir··on Pokemon Card Animation
This is beautiful. Made me realize one of the biggest things that the Hearthstone online TCG got right. The overall handling of the cards, especially when opening packs, is very well done and almost feel tactile. Many online TCGs just take flat pictures of cards and pretend to be done.
halgir··on Pokemon Card Animation
I had no idea there was a sequel to the GB Pokémon TCG Game! Loved the first one as a kid.

There is an online version of the TCG, that might do something for you (disclaimer: it didn't do much for me).

In my experience, contractors will build exactly what I ask for without challenging unimportant details that would have made things easier. My interpretation is that because they have so much internalized knowledge, they assume that I obviously know many of the same things that they do, and that I have already considered any such changes and actively decided against them. I've since learned to do what was suggested above.

It's been a valuable lesson for myself to question just how much of my internalized "obvious" knowledge about technical matters is apparent to clients and partners. Never assume.

I don't - it's been many years since I read much creepypasta. This one in particular stuck in my mind though.

In Danish (probably other norse languages too) there is "sulten" which means hungry and "lækkersulten" which translates to delicious-hungry, for when I feel a craving for something in particular.

It's a good point that explicitly distinguishing them might help. If I feel hungry, I might consciously stop and assess whether I'm legitimately hungry or only delicious-hungry.
