hahajk··on Hyperrealistic Deepfaked Tom Cruise in a Coffeeshop
I wonder if having all this "strong evidence" has caused us modern people to lose the social norms and relationships that people had to depend on back when human trust was more important. Like, good fences make good neighbors but what happens when all of a sudden the fences don't work anymore and we have to be good neighbors without them?

I'm guessing an uncomfortable transition period at least.

hahajk··on In the past, I've had students call my problem sets “emotionally trying”
And then to others it means spending going out and building things using concepts they're learning, not because they want to pass the course but because they're obsessed.

I just started as a teacher, I don't know if that kind of obsession can be cultivated in students through a specific environment or if it's something they bring with them into the class. Or if even trying to bottle that lightning alienates less willing students.

hahajk··on Impact of breakfast skipping compared with dinner skipping
Would this be an intuitive way of putting it? If I pull a random 17 phones off an assembly line, and 16 of them are defective, I can pretty confidently say there is something wrong with the whole product line even though n=17?
hahajk··on Secondments at Zapier
Thanks for the clip, it really is pretty dumb. They just had a challenge where they jumped/fell off the cliff with a bungee cord as a team-building exercise. It looks like they were expected to say "yes" to that but say "no" to falling off in what was described as a "high-tech barrel." Maybe there were cues or other information not shown in the clip, but I have no idea how any contestant was supposed to assess the risk of either of those activities.
hahajk··on A US federal agency is considering a ban on gas stoves
Everything I've heard about induction stoves from people on the internet has been positive. Everything I've heard about induction stoves from people I know IRL who have them has been negative.
hahajk··on VALL-E: Microsoft’s new zero-shot text-to-speech model
I think it's important to keep considering whether or not something should be regulated, at least keep asking and not fall victim to an echo chamber.

But in this case, couldn't your argument have been applied to photoshop or video manipulation software? Those are meant to deceive, right?

hahajk··on The “36 questions that lead to love” were originally 40 questions and different
The point of these questions isn't the content of the questions themselves, it's the increasing level of intimacy. Just like kissing isn't about the utility of putting your tongue in someone else's mouth.

I probably don't care what a stranger's guilty pleasure is, but being let in to that private part of their life is a big part of what makes dating feels special.

hahajk··on TikTok banned on government devices under spending bill passed by Congress
Deployed service members often (usually?) can’t connect to the internet using their personal devices. They use public government computers connected to govt networks.
hahajk··on I am done. I give up
Furthermore, getting new software approved at a big corp can already be a hassle. But at all the places I've worked, seeking approvals for and opening up a funding line to pay for a license increases the hassle 10x.
hahajk··on People took some potassium and lost some weight
Actually you lose most of your mass through carbon dioxide, through breathing. (And similarly, trees and plants get almost all their mass through carbon dioxide, not the soil.)
hahajk··on Riffusion – Stable Diffusion fine-tuned to generate music
I think this type of generative stuff opens up entirely new possibilities. For the longest time I've wanted to host a rowing or treadmill competition, where contestants submit a music track. The tracks are mashed up with weighting based on who is in the lead and by how much.

I don't know of existing tech that can generate actual good mashups in realtime given arbitrary mp3s, but this has promise!

hahajk··on Getting Started with Tmux
For me it was the excessively minimal defaults. I also forget the exact issues, but I remember Alacrity felt usable even before editing the conf file; Kitty didn't.
hahajk··on FTX Contagion
No, investments generate income.

Buying a house and renting it out is an investment. The value of the house doesn't fall because it's generating rent.

Buying a house with the intention of reselling it a year later is speculation.

Buying a car for your taxi service is an investment because the car now generates income for you.

Buying gold, crypto, or money markets is always speculation because these things do not generate income.

hahajk··on FTX Contagion
Buying more expensive manufacturing equipment for your factory is an investment, even if the value of that machine falls after you buy it.

Investments generate an ROI, like the parent gave examples of (rent, dividends, the production of goods). Speculation is about arbitrage and reselling things at higher prices.

hahajk··on Backyard Ballistics
The point is, the federal government does not have a delineated power to regulate firearms or silencers. When they outlaw them, they say they're regulating "interstate commerce", which is a power they are granted.

If you manufacture the silencer yourself and don't cross state lines, and the materials you used also didn't cross state lines, the federal govt can't regulate it. (Although the state can.)

I found more info: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privately_made_firearm

hahajk··on Backyard Ballistics
Isn't there a "homemade gun" scene that operates on the idea that a weapon whose resources are collected in a single state, and that is assembled is that state, is not subject to federal firearm restrictions? (Since many if not most federal regulations rely in the commerce clause)
hahajk··on Just a bunch of idiots having fun: a photo history of the LAN party
I don't think the lack of LAN support is really that big of a deal - you can still go to a friend's house and play together in a private game while using game servers. In fact, I'm doing that today - bringing my laptop and playing Humankind with friends at their house. I think that still counts as a LAN party in spirit.
hahajk··on Show HN: I built my own PM tool after trying Trello, Asana, ClickUp, etc.
Like others have said, your comment here is very interesting and makes me want to learn more, but your (pleasantly minimal) homepage has no more information.

Amplenote has a unique "idea/concept" they're designing for, and they spell it out in a series of very interesting blog posts [1]. I don't practice their "idea funnel" concept but their blog post made me interested enough to eventually subscribe to their service.

It would be really cool to see a similar post for Nestful.

hahajk··on Fake Books
What does "The full faith and credit of the the United States government" mean? You can't redeem dollars bills for anything from the govt as far as I know.
hahajk··on Lufthansa bans AirTags in checked luggage
...or you live in a dense suburb where they never bothered to put up towers, or a rural area where towers are more scarce, or any where that you have to go in a building without wifi..

I don't honestly believe many developers don't experience this a lot. It's probably just such a transitory experience that it's not worth the rearchitecting required to really solve it.

hahajk··on Stadia died because no one trusts Google
The existence and popularity of Dogpile was an admission that search engines were not solved yet. We just used all of them all at once understanding they were each imperfect.
hahajk··on Predicting Google Closures (2013)
How do you see Google Docs? It doesn't have ads but instead I think some people actually pay for it.
hahajk··on FCC Approves 5 Year Satellite Deorbiting Rule
time to assign 25 year missions to satellites built to last 10 years!
hahajk··on Senators introduce bill to thin out the 900k pieces of orbiting junk
I can't find out what the cost to govt is in order to launch something into space, but you do need govt permission to launch since all space objects must belong to a specific country.

The govt can include the cleanup cost as part of the launch licensing cost.

hahajk··on Search 5.8B images used to train popular AI art models
This is great just from a prompt engineering perspective. Now I can see what labels are typically like for the types of images I'm looking for instead of guessing.
hahajk··on Increase: Banking API
I learned (almost) the hard way how important legacy features are.

For me it was buying a house and realizing that you must be able to wire money.

When the stakes were high, Varo failed me (they promised they could do it, but on the day I needed it they refused) and I had to scramble at my traditional bank to make the payment in time to avoid $20k on penalties.

Other than the most important transaction of my life, though, they've been great!

hahajk··on Dark Sky iOS app will no longer work from Dec 31
This looks like Dark Sky's response to that article.

https://mobile.twitter.com/darkskyapp/status/108135144619558...

So, not the case with Dark Sky.

hahajk··on Cheating at chess with a computer for my shoes
But you don't need a computer for that... knowing the odds for a hand is a pretty basic skill. And on the other hand if you did place bets based on your hand odds you'd be leaking a lot of information to your opponent.
hahajk··on Email doesn't suck – it's email clients that need improving
Maybe the problem is that culturally, email is treated like face-to-face talking. We often talk to each other just to be pleasant. It wouldn't be weird for someone to remind you about a meeting if they saw you, or to ask if you're going to the company picnic. Actually, it would be weirder if they just posted it on the calendar and said nothing else.

So, maybe email clients aren't the issue, people are the issue (like most problems).

hahajk··on An odd discovery on Spotify
Or enough other people were fooled and listen to the "fake" Fanny, creating a listener correlation between the real and fake Fannys.
