hahajk··on Kids’ competitive activities lead to debt for parents
You lived during a good time to sit around and play with computers. I doubt time spent with an ipad today will translate to useful technical skills.
hahajk··on Google will retire Gmail’s Basic HTML view in January 2024
> If somehow Gmail fucks me over in the future, I’ll deal with that when the time comes.

You should at least try to imagine how catastrophic losing access to your email would be. How many accounts on other websites are linked to your email? Which of your banks have you set up backup emails beyond your primary? What about car registration and voter registration? For me, those both use email 2FA. For a while I was using a Nest thermostat; my house temperature in a large part was linked to my email.

hahajk··on CatalaLang/catala: Programming language for law specification
It's great that your congressperson was enlightened enough to pull the bill. Some states (such as Minnesota) apparently actively prosecute children for sexting.

hahajk··on Pockets: A History of Carrying Capacity
It still doesn't answer the question: if women complain so much about a lack of pockets [0], why don't they buy clothes with pockets? This article by HSW [1] suggests it's a "male dominated fashion industry." That doesn't sound right to me, being a free market. I suspect it's just that women don't actually buy pants with big pockets because they don't like the way they look.

hahajk··on Are any words the same in all languages?
It's universal! Radiolab has an episode on it [1]. We've been talking to babies the same way for thousands of years.

hahajk··on Nvidia on the Mountaintop
My dishwasher does not come close to doing 90% of clearing the table, washing the dishes, drying and putting them away.

My laundry machine is certainly better than by hand, but folding laundry and putting it away is significant.

hahajk··on Giving up the iPad-only travel dream
More importantly for an airplane, you can't watch Netflix (or most streaming movies) offline on a laptop. Though I've never used a Surface, maybe you can do that with some kind of mobile app that runs on a hybrid thing.
hahajk··on AI won’t replace humans, but humans with AI will replace humans without AI
Maybe we have skins cells that look out at the freedom and autonomy of some single cell organisms and think to themselves that something has been lost participating in this human project.
hahajk··on MSX-DOS
I believe Xbox is named that because it was originally, tragically, named the "DirectX Box". DirectX had the X because it was a combination of several APIs, all called DirectPlay, DirectSound, etc.

But perhaps in a larger sense, maybe Microsoft just has a fetish for the letter.

hahajk··on Managing Kitchen Fruit Flies with a Little Shop of Horrors
I remember reading that fungus gnats are a sign you're overwatering your houseplants. (Water uptake is correlated with photosynthesis, indoor plants don't get or usually need much light). I just did a quick internet search and it looks like the popular advice for fungus gnats is still the same - water less. It'll also prevent root rot.
hahajk··on FedNow Is Live
My intuition is that the existence of fraud protection probably lowers the incidence of people attempting fraud.

I'm someone who (still!) believes in the Bitcoin project but I'm hesitant to use it for online payments because if someone rips me off there's no one I can go to for help.

hahajk··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
What this highlights is that online we have lost - or at least eroded - social norms. If I see a sign that says "no vehicles allowed", it's obvious they don't mean wagons and strollers. In almost all cases the police and the public are 99% in sync. Online, though, the moderators are forced to do a careful study of every action and become asinine literalists lest a horde of boundary-pushers ruin it for everyone.
hahajk··on Windows NT on 600MHz machine opens apps instantly. What happened?
I just reloaded Big Sur on a 10 year old Macbook (the last OS version it supports), and it runs like that video.

My 2 year old HP laptop running Windows, on the other hand, runs the way we're thinking about.

hahajk··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
There's a difference between knowing that a certain number of people are statistically dying right now vs knowing that 5 specific people are currently dying in a specific way.
hahajk··on Cookie Clicker saved my PhD
> One of the peculiar and interesting aspects of this game is that it rewards you for not playing it. Often, the next cookie purchase requires several orders of magnitude more cookies than you are currently producing, so you have no option but to leave the game alone, sometimes for days, before your cookie factories churn out enough cookies for you to unlock the next level of progress.

A mechanic all too often ruined by desperate monetization.

hahajk··on My 24 year old HP Jornada can do things an iPhone still can't do
His reason is that if he can program it, he is no longer at the whims of the manufacturer. They decided that two timers were "bad UX?" He can theoretically add it back in.

I used a bullet journal for a while for the same reason. No longer was I waiting for an update to a todo app, or voting on features. If I wanted to add a "feature" to my todo list, I was in full control of doing so.

hahajk··on Octopuses are building small “cities” off the coast of Australia (2017)
What do you mean by sentient? Aren't most animals we commonly eat sentient? In that the there is an experience of "being" that animal? At least, insofar as we can tell?
hahajk··on What if we set GPT-4 free in Minecraft?
Isn't GPT-4 multimodal? I remember it designing a website based off of a sketch during the initial demo.
hahajk··on Update on Sharing
I think this strategy will only work a little longer. The crackdown on sharing is only start. As the pressure increases on streaming services to turn more profits I'd expect longer contract lengths. I wouldn't be surprised to see Adobe-style "reduced price monthly payment" contracts from the more corporate services.
hahajk··on OpenAI came after our domain because we use GPT in it
No, I think they were referring to plaintext.

hahajk··on City Council to install 20 cameras as automated license-plate recognition system
I know that California's doesn't match plates to car make/model, at least the toll and red light cameras. Someone faked my friend's license plate on their car and he's been getting all their tickets. Their cars aren't even the same color.
hahajk··on Lego Googol Machine
Or, if you attached the last piece to a concrete wall, how long would it take the machine to break?
hahajk··on Rate The Landlord: Anonymously share information with tenants like you
I'd rather have $1000 without going to court than $2000 and the hassle of suing someone.
hahajk··on Rate The Landlord: Anonymously share information with tenants like you
I would never move into a home without a lease. A lease protects a tenant as much as the landlord. What's preventing you from raising the rent arbitrarily or canceling the agreement with little to no notice?
hahajk··on The taxman will eventually come for AI, too
Or tax the use of natural and shared resources [1]. The idea that somewhere out there value is being created and the govt isn't getting a cut of it is wicked.

Google autocomplete does make headlines, regularly.

hahajk··on We're Knot Friends
> Thinking of this makes me realize me how little I’ve experienced communal activities since then. It has the same feeling of a family sitting together making Christmas cookies, or a group of artists sitting together sketching. People complain about the difficulty of making friends in your thirties, and I wonder how much of that is simply because we don’t afford ourselves the time for such communal activities. We aren’t regularly around groups of people with the sort of free time that precipitates these moments of idle bonding.

Isn't this what lunch is for? (I know not all organizations have a culture of "taking lunch")

hahajk··on NASA's planetary radar captures detailed view of oblong asteroid
Eh, your explanation makes it sound like the radar "image" is as divorced from physical coordinates as a spectrogram or a bar chart. Radar images are at least phyicalish... the asteroid does look similar to the image in real life. Doppler and range do roughly map to x/y. I hear it alot with SAR imagery as well - that we're not looking at a "physical representation". We are - there are just different anomalies to account for.
hahajk··on Sci-fi becomes real as renowned magazine closes submissions due to AI writers
I'll bite. Who doesn't have access to a printer? I'm pretty sure libraries have them.
hahajk··on Some insects I found inside dried Turkish figs from Trader Joe’s
What about the caterpillars and beetles the author found?
