hackmiester··on Wrangling 2000 Git Repos at Reddit
I don't come here because of the UI, I come here because of the content. If it were my site, the UI would be a little more suited to the current year.

If everyone loved it, there'd be no Hacker News mobile apps.

hackmiester··on PinePhone review after a month of daily driving
I am already using an iPhone, so those things do not typically enter my calculus for selecting apps. I don't like it, but the alternative is using Android, so it's the tradeoff I am making. I know that isn't a very good answer.
hackmiester··on Are we past peak IPv4?
I mean, I guess if all you care about is getting from point A to point B, a bullet train has no benefit over a steam locomotive.
hackmiester··on Hold on there: WPA3 connections fail after 11 hours
If we count generations that way, then yeah, sure.

But we could also count like: 5, 5 Wave II, 6, 6E, 7.

In this case, 2 generations behind would be either Wi-Fi 5 Wave II or Wi-Fi 6. Those are both quite good! My workplace is just deploying Wi-Fi 6 now, and at home I still have Wi-Fi 5 Wave II.

This app is what you want. It can push the photos to NFS or Samba over the network. https://www.photosync-app.com/ Maybe it will help someone who still uses an iPhone.

It's not quite that bad. The thing you need on one end is a digital modem. You can buy a card containing a bank of these for the Cisco ISR G2 platform. The ebay cost is about $60. Then in the same router, you can put a T1 card, which the digital modems will use to accept calls (costs about $15). Finally you can buy an analog modem card (costs about $20) to accept calls from another modem. All of this would be contained in 1 or 2 rack units.

There are other methods but that's the one I would use. To see one of the other methods, try here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ_hWS6ked8

I don't know, but it's definitely keeping me on board. I don't even call generally, I just text.

The lack of NAT represents the removal of an issue. The fact that you already understand NAT does not reduce the actual, real complexity that it is introducing.

We run Dell Latitude, Precision, and sometimes XPS (though I hate those). Pretty much no issues. Dell would rather us run Ubuntu it seems, but it's close enough that RHEL tends to work fine.

I think you have some preconceived notions of what "hacking" is and isn't. Most on Hacker News do not use "hack" as a pejorative. I suspect in this case it's just an engineering / practicality focused ethos that can be applied as opposed to "design by committee."

Hacking something together - and then refining it - is how many good products are designed.

hackmiester··on Sonoma's log gets briefer and more secretive
Seriously - this dichotomy is absurd. My workplace has been RHEL for 20 years and has quietly side stepped all of this nonsense. Yes, even after the acquisition.

If the latter was true, then "wheelWeightState" (and others) would not work. But, they do work.
hackmiester··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
Thanks! I was trying to figure this out but I didn't have great Internet access (for some reason...) so I just hacked it instead.
hackmiester··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
I tried to change the flight level by PATCHing altitude, but it seemed to require authentication. Oh well.

Here is how to get the equivalent data on a Delta flight.

    $ curl https://wifi.delta.com/api/flight-data | jq
      % Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
                                     Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
    100   448  100   448    0     0   5600      0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:--  5743
    {
      "timestamp": "2023-07-11T14:54:41Z",

      "flightDuration": 278,
