hackerNoose··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Cheap foreign labour is good for rich people but bad for poor people that they compete with, at least in the short term.
hackerNoose··on Covid: Summary of lab-origin hypothesis
This is more akin to a criminal case where science can be used as evidence.
hackerNoose··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
This "Mean Girls" style of running a company is not something I'm willing to accept even for remotely important services.
hackerNoose··on Norway to hit 100% electric vehicle sales by early next year
Lots of cheap hydro.
hackerNoose··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
People don't get vaccinated because of the evidence but because they chose to believe in some authority. Heavy handed censors (or fact checkers in newspeak) and other coercive tactics lead people to distrust these authorities even more.
hackerNoose··on Lesson of ivermectin: meta-analyses based on summary data alone are unreliable
That's a straw man. These people are of course doing something dangerous but mainstream newspapers are routinely calling doctor prescribed Ivermectin 'horse dewormer'. Both 'camps' treatment of this subject has been a real low water mark and it looks like the science might be as well.
hackerNoose··on Why Are So Many Young Men Giving Up on College?
Your sentiment is the root problem of the issue. Any issue that touches on problems facing white people will of course be reflexively supported by the alt right, white supremacist, etc., as well. This makes it impossible to talk about these issues without being associated with those groups or accused of "dog whistling". Similarly, if you speak up about men's issues you are considered part of the manosphere, a misogonyst and probably alt right. Basically any opinion that doesn't sing to the choir is labeled a "dog whistle" and dismissed. Basically we have allowed a small group of anxious people to silence all discussion and it's frankly destructive and untenable in the long run.
hackerNoose··on Squats can boost brain activity [video]
It's also the best protection for your spine and maybe the only well established way of mitigating back pain. I've noticed a lot of older people are afraid of weight lifting because they think it will lead to injuries, however the science shows that it's one if the safest forms of exercise. Personally I don't understand how people function without it.
hackerNoose··on Rent control isn’t working in Sweden
I live in Sweden and I can attest that rent control is a disaster. Lofty political aspirations aside the simple truth is that the middle class does not want to live in the crime-ridden suburbs and will do anything to stay out of there. As that is the only place where you can rent they're forced into taking huge loans and buying something in the city, or they can try their luck on the unsurprisingly flourishing black market. The effect of this is that Sweden now has one of the highest private debt burdens in the world. As long as the prices keep going up the system keeps limping along, but if that would ever change there could be some interesting consequences.
hackerNoose··on America’s government comes clean on UFOs
Have you actually listened to the interviews with the pilots? The debunking videos offered do not explain what they saw or experienced. Choosing the debunking guys explanation means that you basically have to believe in a conspiracy involving the pilots. So you're back to square one.
hackerNoose··on America’s 50 Largest Inherited-Wealth Dynasties Accelerate Inequality
Sweden has one of the largest wealth inequalities in the world. This might be unexpected given how how the aggressive taxation keeps the income equality high.
hackerNoose··on Europe's Software Problem
Sweden is unusual in that way. You often hear about that it's one of the countries with the most equal income distribution but at the same time it has one of the highest wealth inequalities. Basically it's hard to make any money by working you have to own things.
hackerNoose··on In two incidents, F-16 aviators were rendered unconscious, but saved by software
The automated one is the female "altitude, altitude, pull up, pull up". The screaming dude is his wingman.
hackerNoose··on Larry King has died
You don't fear it because it's an abstract thing to you. If you'll have an moment of facing impeding doom your primal instincts will rear it's head no doubt.
hackerNoose··on WSL2 corrupting Git repositories and shell history
It's quite obvious actually. What people want from Unix is the terminal. The GUI experience on Linux is subpar. Random strange bugs and driver issue are still rife in 2021. Windows has the opposite issue. WSL promises to solve this by giving you the best of both worlds.
hackerNoose··on Chess tactics explained
I thought that was the biggest weaknes. The challenges all feel small and made up. The depiction of substance abuse is just strange. It's like a teenagers dream of how it is to become a chess pro with some small speed bumps to not make it too blatant. As for the sport, her career was more similar to that of boxer than a chess player.
hackerNoose··on On Learning Chess as an Adult – From 650 to 1750 in Two Years
It's not very realistic when it comes to the chess, except the actual games. I also found it frustrating that they obviously were inspired by Bobby Fischer whose real life would have made a great story, but decided he wasn't hollywood friendly.
hackerNoose··on U.S. Exits Paris Climate Accord
China is the biggest polluter and they plan to increase their co2 emissions to at least 2030 so I don't think you'll find an ally there.
hackerNoose··on I Think Bluetooth Is Finally OK
It's a feature on certain headphones. After using it I wouldn't buy headphones without it.
hackerNoose··on We can't send email more than 500 miles (2002)
units -U gives you the location of definitions file
hackerNoose··on A third of Americans now show signs of clinical anxiety or depression
This effect is called hypergamy and it's always been around. Tinder and the likes just exaggerate it. It's sort of like increasing wealth inequality but for men's dating. There's been genetic studies which show that most women that have lived procreated, while during some periods most men did not. Upside is that if you belong to the top 5% of attractive men this is the best time to be alive :)
hackerNoose··on Coronavirus: Some scientists say UK virus strategy is 'risking lives'
If I'm not mistaken the Spanish flue actually mutated to become more lethal.
hackerNoose··on The Effect of Cold Showering on Health and Work (2016)
Most probably the high blood pressure had already caused the changes that lead to the stroke. If it was going to happen the time of highest physical stress was the most probable. You can make the same argument against exercise, but then it sounds even more false. Everything is a trade-off.
hackerNoose··on Text Editing Hates You Too

hackerNoose··on What Really Brought Down the Boeing 737 Max?
I think it was the first article I've read on the issue that actually explained all the factors in a clear way. As it's a complicated issue it needed to be long. Even though the pilots evidently were incompetent, I do think he's too light on his criticism against Boeing. The failure mode on this system was too drastic, and unnecessarily persistent. Combined with the fact that all that was needed was one faulty sensor this was obviously shoddy engineering.
