h1karu··on Jack Parsons: Occultist involved in early rocketry
The 'Great Work' is a term borrowed from Hermetic / Alchemical lore which predates Thelema by at least a thousand years. To understand how it found it's way into Levi's work and into Thelema you need to look back much further and examine to whatever degree you can the Mysteries of the ancient world

"We have been to the moon, we have charted the depths of the ocean and the heart of the atom, but we have a fear of looking inward to ourselves because we sense that is where all the contradictions flow together." -Terrence Mckenna

I wonder why Wired magazine has been wading into "deep politics" more and more recently. I mean the German and Occult underpinnings of NASA is a significant can of worms for a publication with a mainstream readership to be opening.

Autoscaling isn't really intended for bursting, it works better when you have predictable traffic patterns. But if I understand it correctly you can use EB with custom Cloudwatch metrics and that lets you do some pretty cool, predictive things that autoscale based on external factors such as: volume of Twitter mentions, Google Analytics data, number of active user sessions, etc. In theory you could write some app code that uses custom cloudwatch metrics to initiate scale-up during certain timeframes. right ?

h1karu··on Homeless Lose a Longtime Last Resort: Living in a Car
yes there are places within a short car ride of the city where you can rent.. for about $750+/month a place to put an RV with electricity and hookups and all of that.. Some of these vehicle dwellers can't even afford that.

As far as FREE places to camp with an RV, no absolutely not. You have to drive hours to get to a campground where you might be able to camp for free or close to nothing.

h1karu··on The bullshit humanitarian obsession of silicon valley.
Thanks to the emergence of the Internet mankind is learning to reorganize his relationships and activities more rapidly than ever before. This is leading to a situation where feedback loops can spontaneously arise which potentiate change at various levels seemingly out of nowhere.

Some of these changes will be clearly humanitarian in nature, while other changes will seem insignificant to the larger picture yet all are part of an important learning process that we have to go through together in order to figure out how to cultivate a better life in the information age.

Even the "apps" that seem to do more harm than good are playing an important role in helping us learn how to get it right one day in the future.

h1karu··on AWS Responds with Price Cuts: Google vs AWS Pricing Round 2
If I hear the word Enterprise again I swear I'm going to vomit. :P Who cares what the Enterprise is doing ? You should be asking what Google is doing to attract the smartest web startups who will be tomorrow's Enterprise :)
h1karu··on AWS Responds with Price Cuts: Google vs AWS Pricing Round 2
fair enough.. I didn't realize there was a good solution to pre-warm yourself but I suppose it makes sense that it should be possible. My intention with the comment was to point out that we're not comparing apples with apples when it comes to flexibility of the core infrastructure.. and load balancing is about as core as it gets.

Both platforms have features that the other doesn't have for example GCE has Persistent Disks that can be connected to multiple VMs. Amazon has ElastiCache and a DNS service, etc

h1karu··on AWS Responds with Price Cuts: Google vs AWS Pricing Round 2
Amazon’s Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) is not designed to handle sudden spikes. Customers need to request AWS to pre-warm the ELB to get it ready to handle the expected load. This requires a subscription to AWS support. GCE’s Load Balancer doesn’t require pre-warming. It scales instantly to support spiky traffic. Compute Engine Load Balancing hits 1 million+ requests per second with no pre-warming.
h1karu··on Ask HN: I can't do this anymore, I need help
Get some treez and stay blazed for a few daze to decompress, then get back to your grind. Build a product. It doesn't have to be software.

I'll give you the keys to the kingdom..

start selling webinars... paint yourself as someone who is qualified to teach WHATEVER and get people to join a free 1 hour webinar where you're going to teach them whatever.. give them a taste and then upsell them on a package of additional 2 hour long webinars. $200 package.

Start advertising your free webinars via social paid distribution channels. Once you tweak it perfectly and build up some experience you'll be able to spend a certain amount on advertising to acquire enough customers to fully book your webinars each week.

20 people per webinar shelling out $200/each.. doing it again every week with a new batch of people.. every time you do it you build up a video archive that you can to build a non-webinar based video product down the road...

People feel good about spending $$ on webinars because they can get personalized education not just a pre-packaged info-product.. all you need is a niche people care about and some life experience that you can market as being valuable.

This one 35 year old lady is selling webinars for $400 to teach people how to "leverage instagram to better market your business". That's just one example.. she didn't even have any material written down when she started selling her first webinar she just kind of learned as she went along. She's doing well because her product is about teaching small business owners how to make more money. You want your info-product to appeal to people who already have money to spend.

good luck

h1karu··on MongoDB, Better
I spoke too soon, seems pretty bad ass in that case. gotta love _changes
h1karu··on MongoDB, Better
Why would that tool ever be mongo ? I think Mongo is a thing because people coming from Rails ORM libraries feel like "wow I can jump on the no-sql bandwagon just by using a library that feels kind of like the ActiveRecord I'm used to".

It's only popular because there's less of a conceptual gap between mongo and the relational database tools that a lot of people are used to.

Couchdb on the other hand requires you to actually learn and use map/reduce.. which is a pain for people who don't feel like having to learn something new, but Couchdb is MUCH MUCH better in a lot of ways and Mongo is pretty much fundamentally flawed in my opinion

I do wish rackspace luck though with their offering. I think it was smart of them to create this mongodb product for one simple reason: a good number of people are already using mongodb so it makes sense to help them get the most out of it.

h1karu··on MongoDB, Better
There's no need to go through all of that trouble.. Why not just use Cloudant until the BigCouch merge hits ? :)

h1karu··on Why CoffeeScript Isn't the Answer
npm depends on a javascript compiler such as g8 so how is that different than clojurescript depending on the JVM ?! It's no different at all you're just complaining that you don't like to have to install software before using it which is ridiculous if you want to use powerful software.
h1karu··on Tech startup scene starting to flourish in Oakland
I'm getting hella downvoted because the tech scene in the Bay Area can't appreciate the various strata of culture that surrounds them. Since they're afraid of it they group it all together as "gang culture" which is a myopic viewpoint. It's Oakland culture not gang culture it just so happens that a subset of Oakland culture interpenetrates gang culture.

Haters gone hate.

h1karu··on Screw stigma. I’m coming out.
I was only giving my personal opinion based on the data I've seen. All I'm really advocating here is that every person should educate themselves before accepting any diagnosis. Do your own research and form your own opinions.
h1karu··on Screw stigma. I’m coming out.
Fair enough, although I suspect it was the act of taking time to reflect on his own inner processes which helped him and this could have occurred outside of the context of a "diagnosis" and without drugs. It's sad that in modern society people are trained to not talk to each other about their emotions and feelings outside of the context of a "sick ward" where one party is being financially motivated to behave in a certain way.
h1karu··on Screw stigma. I’m coming out.
Most of them, but they don't consciously realize what they're doing in most cases. The norms for their profession slowly creep towards over-pathologizing because of the profit incentive and also because of the effectiveness of advertising campaigns by drug companies. Social norms have changed across a broad demographic to accommodate the large scale systemic misdiagnosis problem. Just because the manipulation for profit is widespread and well accepted does not mean it's not happening.
h1karu··on Screw stigma. I’m coming out.
In case you never considered it before there is a heavy PROFIT INCENTIVE for your psychiatrist to diagnose you with some form of mental illness that he is familiar with. You need to become a domain expert yourself in order to figure out if you're being manipulated for profit or if the diagnosis is legitimate.
h1karu··on Introducing Michael Abrash, Oculus Chief Scientist
Yea but isn't the idea of VR fundamentally flawed ? I mean I can imagine how presence feels like magic when you're just sitting still looking around, but is it really possible to move your avatar around without breaking presence ? I mean your body won't feel the centripetal force, nor the tactile sensations so it seems like any movement at all would break the illusion.. and if presence is broken then you might as well just be playing a FPS on a nice monitor.
