gwilkes··on Show HN: Open-Source Animal Crossing–Style UI for Claude Code Agents
Right, pretty sure people got their accounts shut down for doing this kinda thing in the early days of OpenClaw before it was renamed and when it supported login. I guess you can take your chances but API is probably the only safe way to use this.
gwilkes··on The economics and politics of Thomas the Tank Engine (2015)
I think this may have been inspired by “Thomas Gon’ Give It To Ya” which came out two years earlier: https://youtu.be/xFSwIw-_-as

Pretty sure this one inspired a whole bunch of rap songs mixed with the Thomas theme song. They all sound pretty good but still think this one is the best

gwilkes··on How did the plain green lawn become the central landscaping feature in America?
Lawns are racist? Sweet. That should be sufficient ammo to cancel them, get on it twitter people
gwilkes··on Some unique aspects in US which make risks of COVID19 higher than Europe
Maybe it is fear mongering, but the points raised are valid issues mainly caused by the American health care system. In Japan where I live, drugs that Americans are used to getting over the counter like Tylenol are prescription and no one thinks twice about going to the doctor for the most minor ailment. Obviously the US is the complete opposite of this. The American health care system does have systemic issues that MAY make the coronovirus worse there. I don't think the author is doing anyone a disservice by pointing that out.
gwilkes··on Dark Horse Discord
Spot on, the 10,000 free limit is much more limiting than many people think. I've seen very small businesses of even 3-4 people lose tons of institutional knowledge just because they wouldn't pay for slack. With larger tech groups you can start losing information after a few days. And the larger the group the less likely they will pay for it. I like the UI of Slack but am happy when I see tech groups using Discord instead.

I have more thoughts here if anyone is interested, including alternatives, "Why tech groups can use Slack for free but open source projects and businesses of any size shouldn’t": https://medium.com/@gabriel_wilkes/why-tech-groups-can-get-a...

gwilkes··on Why is hi-tech Japan using cassette tapes and faxes? (2015)
Along similar lines some of the best services and products I have experience in Japan have been from organizations and companies that declare themselves as communist. One example, the best child daycare in my Japanese city (in my opinion) was a communist one that emphasized nature, community, and healthy child development. Also, the best food delivery service (in terms of food quality and the difference is quite noticeable) in my city is one that called themselves communist as well.

Indeed, I don't even know any Japanese people that use the kana keys. I don't know the recent data but in 2009 there was a study that found only 12% of Japanese people used kana input.

Something that is disappointing about these keycaps is that they mostly only make these for US keyboard layouts not actual Japanese keyboard layouts. I have a Japanese keyboard that the keys were getting worn on and something like this seems like it would be a good replacement but it isn't because several of the keys that aren't letters such as shift characters on numbers and other special characters are labeled wrong for a real Japanese keyboard.

There are some Japanese layout replacement keycaps but the selection is very limited compared to how many of these stylistic kana keycaps they make for US layouts. I cringe a little bit every time I see these keycaps. I mean I get it, but still.

gwilkes··on How to Measure Indoor Air Quality with a Raspberry Pi, RuuviTags and PMS7003
Couldn't tell from the link, is there an English language option on the device?
gwilkes··on Kuo: Apple to include new scissor switch keyboard in MacBook
Recently replaced my 2012 MBA battery, the batteries are quite cheap and the replacement is surprisingly quick and easy on this model. About a five minute job, you can buy the battery with the needed tools here: https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/MacBook-Air-13-Inch-Late-20...
gwilkes··on Raspberry Pi 4
To add to this, the bad software support had very real performance implications as well. I was surprised to see benchmarks where the Pi 3 dominated boards that very clearly beat it on paper
gwilkes··on In Japan, It’s a Riveting TV Plot: Can a Worker Go Home on Time?
? They do that in my Japanese town of Kumagaya but that is for the kids to go home because it is getting dark. It changes to 4 or 5pm depending on the time of year. Are you sure that music is to remind adults that it is time to go home?
gwilkes··on The Global Attention Span Is Getting Shorter
I believe it very sincere. This page is quite helpful in particular, good tips but I especially like the list of apps at the bottom: https://humanetech.com/resources/take-control/

In particular I think the Freedom app is pretty unique in that you can setup web and app blocklists and it is synced between devices when you have it setup on all of them. So you can set a focus time of 4 hours for example and the apps and sites (and entire categories of sites if you wish) you specified will be blocked on all devices, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android. Surely there are plenty of apps that do similar things but I think the integration of multiple devices is pretty killer as you don't need to manage each one.

The InboxWhenReady and Distraction-Free YouTube extensions I think are really useful too.

gwilkes··on The Global Attention Span Is Getting Shorter
In case this is a serious question and not a joke (unclear which it is) then he may be saying that older movies and shows had these longer intros that seemed normal at the time, but if you watch them again now they seem long and boring now. So that is one to show how your attention span has become shorter
gwilkes··on Pixel 3a
To be clear there is only one lens on the rear of this pixel and every other pixel ever made. They have never had a dual-lens rear camera. The Pixel 3 had a front dual-camera but still just a single rear camera.
gwilkes··on A technology writer visits the Bay Area for the first time
No, about the same. Just a bit more expensive to live there.
gwilkes··on I made a smart watch from scratch
There is more to it than this, like everything else there is a history of pockets. This article makes a good case for why the "history of pockets isn’t just sexist, it’s political": https://www.vox.com/2016/9/19/12865560/politics-of-pockets-s...
gwilkes··on Sorting in Japanese – An Unsolved Problem (2011)
Yes, they are all written the same. This is not too much of an issue as not only do sites like Amazon ask for the pronunciation of your name, most any important paper form would have it as well. In more informal contexts you would just have to ask the person how to pronounce the name. We often need to do this in English with unusual or foreign names.
gwilkes··on Fuchsia OS Introduction
I think useless is going a bit far, isn't Fire OS a fully maintained fork? I believe there are some maintained forks in China as well but I know less about those
gwilkes··on Show HN: Visual Studio Code for Chromebooks and Raspberry Pi
Technically, he probably can install crouton but that isn't such a good idea in a school environment as you need to enable developer mode on the device and you lose some of the security features of Chrome OS.
gwilkes··on Making My Own USB Keyboard from Scratch
I think you're talking about the Minila Air, I removed that sugguestion as I noticed that it actually had 6 keys right of space. The keyboard I left has the correct number of keys on each side of the spacebar and arrows are separated: http://www.diatec.co.jp/products/det.php?prod_c=883
gwilkes··on My 2018 Apple Report Card
iMessage is nice but can't communicate fully (more than basic SMS/MMS) with roughly 85% of the active cell phones in the world.

iCloud Photos really isn't as good. The AI features, face recognition, free backup is all better on Google Photos.

Let's look at Apple Maps for example, do you ever think it will surpass or meet parity with Google Maps?

Look at icloud.com services with the online office suite, calendar, etc. Will that ever come close to Google Docs?

gwilkes··on Making My Own USB Keyboard from Scratch
Hmm, 4 keys left of space and 5 to right is a really specific requirement. My Filco TKL JIS(Japanese Layout) has this and I made it fully reprogrammable using the Pegasus Hoof from here: http://bathroomepiphanies.com/controllers/
gwilkes··on My 2018 Apple Report Card
Agree with you 100%. I think all of Apple's online services are garbage (and I used them since iTools), most of their applications aren't so good either. Thankfully, their OSes get out of the way and are mostly pleasant to use, good platforms for others to build on.

I should probably add that I don't even think Apple is capable of making good online services which is one major reason I switched from iPhones to Nexus/Pixels in 2013. Sure you can use Google services with iPhones but for things like Google Photos they will always be better integrated with Android.

gwilkes··on They Thrive on All-Meat Diet (1929)
Dairy is optional on the carnivore diet, some believe it is better without as it can be another source of allergens. Others are less dogmatic and see no issue with it. Lastly, some recommend to go without for some time like a month or so and then reintroduce to see how you do. In this way the carnivore diet can be used an elimination diet to discover allergens.
gwilkes··on Sloth – Mac app that shows all open files and sockets in use
Hmm, I don't know about this. VS Code is an Electron app and I'm not sure if it would benefit that much from being a "real" Mac app. I much prefer that is it consistent across platforms. I do prefer Terminal.app to Hyper though.

I wouldn't mind if Slack had a native app but I'm not too bothered by it.

gwilkes··on Nihon Noir
Ok fair enough, but it still the same with Engrish. There is plenty that is correct and they clearly are intending to be correct. They could do what you suggested earlier and check with someone, however it still comes down to their intended audience. The photographer knows who he is making this for. The creators of Engrish goods know who they are making their goods for. Both are certainly intending to be correct, but they both know it doesn't matter enough to their intended audience to make a special effort to make 100% sure it correct. This is the assumption in the general case, it may not apply in every case or even to the Nihon Noir in question, but to me it helps explain most cases of Engrish (there are other factors of course) and even cases of reverse Engrish as in this case.
gwilkes··on Nihon Noir
Yes, this is a photography site, what looks nice has a good chance of being more important than what is correct. Also, breaking up a word doesn't make it gibberish, it is a bit less legible surely. We do this all the time though in English, for example on poetic wall posters or logos that look this this:

  LO
  VE
That isn't as easy to read as LOVE, but we understand it and we also understand it was written that way for artistic reasons.

The other point I was making was about intended audience. This isn't a photographer catering specifically to geeks, Japanophiles or Japanese people from what I can tell. He seems to shoot everything if you check out his other galleries.

In ideal world everyone would check that everything that they write is in their non-native language is 100% correct. In the real world, and in Japan where I live, nearly no one cares when English is used incorrectly on garments and other places. The only ones who notice it are the few native English speakers. Some fluent English-speaking Japanese people may notice it, but they generally don't care as it is harmless. Why does Engrish persist? Because it doesn't really matter enough for the intended audience which is regular Japanese people.

It may seem strange but in defending this photographer I am actually defending the use of Engrish in Japan. In this case of Nihon Noir it is the same thing with the languages reversed. Japanese people will clearly notice the mistake but they are unlikely to care much. The intended audience of regular English speakers won't notice the mistake so won't care at all. Us geeks though, we noticed, so what you are saying is that he should have catered to you instead of his intended audience.

gwilkes··on Nihon Noir
Sure, there is a mixture of two languages there but they are both using latin characters so even if you don't know how to pronounce Año correctly you can get close enough knowing only English. If it was called राज्य पार्क State Park then we would be closer to the 日本ノワール Nihon Noir issue we are talking about. राज्य पार्क means State Park in Nepali. Someone who isn't Japanese or hasn't studied Japanese has no chance to read 日本ノワール, to them is is just a visual flourish. If someone decides to use non-latin characters from another language for a visual purpose on their own website for an audience that primarily doesn't understand that language then I believe that they can be freed from the burden of having to ensure that they are using that language in a perfect manner. Should this photographer have contacted a native Japanese speaker to ensure that his title graphic was 100% correct before publishing? I mean maybe, but I think that is asking a bit much for its intended purpose.
gwilkes··on Nihon Noir
Of course I realize that it is the title of the work and I also know that it is standard Japanese (I've lived in Japan for 9 years and currently live there). What I mean by stylistic is that the katakana title only serves as visual flourish and not that the katakana writing itself is written in a particularly stylistic way. This isn't a bilingual site or article, everything else on the site is written in English.
gwilkes··on Nihon Noir
That seems to be correct Spanish, is there something wrong with it? I think the tilde should be removed though now that this is American land. You could preserve the pronunciation somewhat by renaming to Anyo Nuevo State Park. Similar to how was done with the Spanish cañón to the English canyon.
