gvb··on The lost art of lacing cable (2018)
Lacing dates back to the beginning of electrical wiring (late 1800s, early 1900s)

a) "Zip ties" were not invented yet (nylon was invented in 1935)

b) Twisty ties are thin metal wires covered by paper (plastic covered ones were not practical until the late 1900s). The twisty wires were a threat to cut into the wire bundle. They also rust.

Even in modern days with zip ties, lacing has a significant advantage in that zip ties have sharp "tails" that stick out from the bundle and cut your hands and arms when you reach into a compartment. Lacing lies flat against the bundle and has no sharp ends.

gvb··on Nobody needs a faster dishwasher – solve real user needs
Our new(er) Bosch dishwasher beeps three times at the end of the cycle. I like it because it alerts me to open the door a couple of inches to promote drying.

All the dishwashers[1] I had previous to this had a real drying cycle that actively vented the humidity and was effective. My Bosch doesn't vent the compartment so the dishes take forever to dry if you don't open the door.

[1] Said dishwashers all manufactured over 20 years ago, before draconian energy efficiency requirements came into effect.

gvb··on How to design a sailing ship for the 21st century? (2021)
At the end of the article, after the picture "The mizzen of the 'Grace Harwar'; view aft from the main crosstrees", is the calculation:

The amount of cargo that was traded across the oceans in 2019 equals the freight capacity of 22.4 million EcoClippers. Assuming the EcoClipper500 can make 2-3 trips per year, we would need to build and operate at least 7.5 million ships, with a total crew of at least 90 million people.

gvb··on A Proud Ship Turned into a Giant Recycling Problem. Brazil Plans to Sink It
The primary problem with asbestos is breathing the asbestos dust which causes scarring of the lungs. Step 1 of asbestos mitigation is to wet it so it doesn't fill the air with asbestos dust.

Sinking the ship in the ocean prevents the asbestos from crumbling into dust.

gvb··on Self-Modifying FPGAs?
Ref: "How to take advantage of partial reconfiguration in FPGA designs" https://www.eetimes.com/how-to-take-advantage-of-partial-rec...

That capability is called "partial reconfiguration" and is pretty common. Your description sounds like you would like to reconfigure the FPGA at a finer grain level than what "partial reconfig" does. Also, FPGA internals (WRT configuration) are typically undocumented and often proprietary, so having the FPGA self-generate FPGA configurations is going to be difficult unless the FPGA in question is well documented.

Using the FPGA to reconfigure itself might be tricky since FPGAs are typically loaded by an external source. Theoretically, you could generate the new configuration, write it to an external memory (e.g. RAM), and then use the FPGA load-from-memory capability to do what you ask. There is a wide gap between theory and practice here, however.

By the time you implement configuration generation and reloading in an FPGA, you probably will be out of room in the FPGA. :-/

gvb··on Games people play with cash flow
As an owner you still want money to spend. How do you get that if not from the profits?

In the cable company example, from taxes (not paid) and accelerated depreciation (a big part of the taxes not paid). Money is fungible and cash is the ultimately fungible form of money. Tax money (not paid) is better than money taken as taxed profits.

By running the business at a loss (from a profit/loss point of view), the cable company paid little or no taxes. You can take $100 in profit and pay $30 in taxes (net $70 in your pocket), or you can show $0 profit and roll that $130 into your business expecting $130 + growth in the future. Note that, with the cable company example, the cable company "was unprofitable" every year yet paid a compound return of 30% to its shareholders.

gvb··on Tesla won't dominate the auto industry, because no one will
It's a side effect of Tesla's stock plummeting which is (largely?) due to Elon's Twitter shenanigans.

Presumably that went to financing his purchase of Twitter plus paying his taxes (capital gains and taxes on his additional stock grants) and keeping some as pocket change.

gvb··on Ask HN: Which password manager is the most secure and why?
KeePass Touch is in the Apple App Store.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/keepass-touch/id966759076

A version (port/adaption) of syncthing for ios is out there too.

https://forum.syncthing.net/t/syncthing-for-ios/16045

I don't use iDevices so I don't know how well the above apps work.

gvb··on Ask HN: Which password manager is the most secure and why?
KeePass with the database stored locally on your device(s).

I then use syncthing to synchronize the database between my devices (laptop, phone, in-house server, backup).

The data is all under my control and does not reside on any third party computer or data storage. The only exposure to third parties is when the database is synced between devices... but at that point it is encrypted and ephemeral.

gvb··on Cracking encrypted LastPass vaults
Your quote includes the most significant part of the article "and put my actual vault master plaintext password inside".

He took a word list which did not include his password and put his actual password in the word list. He didn't crack his password, he showed that a brute force password guesser can find passwords that are in its word list. If he wanted to save six hours, he could have put it first in the password list. No news here.
