gurleen_s··on The story of DOGE, as told by federal workers
Obviously they’re savings, but in the same way that cutting your arm off will make you weigh less. That’s not a useful topic to discuss.
gurleen_s··on Virtual Protest Held in Roblox for Palestinians
You’re aware we’re probably talking about ten year old kids here, right? Do you want them marching through a city?
gurleen_s··on X suspends pro-Nazi account after two brands halt advertising
Sure it will. It’s always been the case. Do you think reasonable advertisers have always been placing their brand next to content they don’t like? I think it’s more than acceptable that an advertiser demands their content not be next to neo-Nazi content. It’s the free market.
gurleen_s··on Open source hospital price database
This is so insanely dystopian. You shouldn’t have to figure out where care is cheapest, especially in an emergency.
gurleen_s··on SafeGPT: New tool to detect LLMs' hallucinations, biases and privacy issues
This seems like a pretty good thing. The model’s ability to detect _which_ solver to use is the killer feature.
gurleen_s··on How the relentless drive for optimization made baseball impossible to watch
> Cricket's not supposed to be a super-exciting riot of entertainment

Perhaps that’s not what the creators of the game imagined. But it’s how society has progressed. Cricket should be what the masses want it to be.

gurleen_s··on BharatGPT: India's Own ChatGPT
If it’s truly not based on ChatGPT/GPT-3, I feel like it shouldn’t need to be explained that it’s not?
gurleen_s··on What we know about the Apple Neural Engine
> Also average car is unused 95/% of the time, so by this principle everyone should take a bus

That’s exactly right.

gurleen_s··on Tesla Terminated Dozens in Response to New Union Campaign, Complaint Alleges
Yes. There is never a situation in which unionization is “unreasonable”. To say otherwise is to allow businesses to have near unchecked leverage over their workers.
gurleen_s··on Is Making Advanced GUI Applications with Godot the Future? (2020)
And here I was expecting thoughtful discussion on this website.
gurleen_s··on /r/antiwork: A tragedy of sanewashing and social gentrification
That’s because movements that began on the left are regularly appropriated by neoliberals seeking to crush any radical idea. It’s not a coincidence.
gurleen_s··on No Place to Hide – U.K. campaign against end-to-encryption encryption
With all due respect I don’t believe you’re in tune with what college students are feeling.

—- a college student

gurleen_s··on Everything I googled in a week as a professional software engineer (2019)
Your browser history?
gurleen_s··on How to run a small social network site for your friends
This used to be the case with TeamSpeak/Mumble too back in the day. Some of my favorite memories as a teenager was setting up Teamspeak servers on a Linode box and setting up everything. I’m glad Discord is making that easier for kids today.
gurleen_s··on Never Use Black (2012)
Thought the same thing. It’s such a godsend, and the first thing I install on every new machine or virtualenv.
gurleen_s··on Covid-19 Cases and Deaths by Vaccination Status
> The vaccinated are also likely to be taking other mitigation strategies seriously.

It may not be the case in Texas, but I’d imagine the vaccinated are at equal or even greater risk than the unvaccinated because they are able to do more (attending events, school, etc).

gurleen_s··on Meta: A Social Technology Company
The consumer is, in nearly every instance.
gurleen_s··on Glean – System for collecting, deriving and querying facts about source code
I mean, yeah. Imagine being able to do more rich queries against GitHub.
gurleen_s··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
gurleen_s··on Pfizer, Moderna seen reaping billions from Covid-19 vaccine booster market
That money will be largely going to executives and shareholders, people who had very little hand in the science.
gurleen_s··on Essence – An Operating System
Nobody asked you to use it. It’s just someone sharing something cool they did. Lighten up a little.
gurleen_s··on Rep. Takano Introduces Legislation to Reduce the Standard Workweek to 32 Hours
> While I'm not sold on having a government run healthcare system (the pandemic only reinforces this)

A reminder that government services suck on purpose. There is no reason for government healthcare to be ineffective other than the malicious intent of those who run our government (D or R).

gurleen_s··on 1 out of every 153 American workers is an Amazon employee
No, most “communist” countries (and I use the term loosely because really they were just state capitalist) owned many different companies, rather than being part of one mega government corporation.
gurleen_s··on Activision Blizzard Hires Notorious Union-Busting Firm WilmerHale
It’s out of situations like this that unionization happens. Slim chance that they just happened to hire a union-busting law firm by accident.
gurleen_s··on Crafting Interpreters is available in print
Congratulations on releasing the book! Grateful for your work both as a student of computer science and as a Flutter/Dart developer. I’m planning on buying a copy after work. Are there any resources you recommend as a follow up to this book, and do you have any new content planned?
gurleen_s··on Longer interval between Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine doses boosts immunity
What country, if you don’t mind me asking?
gurleen_s··on iDOS 2 will be gone soon
I don’t see how these two things are in any way related. If your car is unsafe, you could kill someone. If you sideload an app on your phone, that only affects you. There’s a line we must all draw between personal freedom and the right of others to also be free when you decide to live in a society with other people.
gurleen_s··on Uber, Lyft drivers strike in Los Angeles
It’s incredibly irresponsible to compare homophobia to a worker not cooperating with a strike.
gurleen_s··on 150 people fatally shot in more than 400 shootings over the 4th of July weekend
The NYPD costs $10 billion per year and yet crime is still rampant in NYC. Are we supposed to pretend that spending more money on them is going to fix the problem? If they can’t do the job with billions of dollars in hand, the next $20 billion won’t make it work.

It’s about time we stop wasting taxpayer dollars on a bandaid for crime and start preventing it by alleviating the problems that cause crime- poverty, healthcare, etc.

gurleen_s··on YouTube permanently bans Right Wing Watch
Because “extreme left” views don’t involve genocide, xenophobia, sexism, etc.
